Last summer, both of our kids went to cooking camp at The Kitchen Coach in Maple Leaf (right behind Cloud City Coffee).
They learned proper cooking techniques, made friends, gained independence in the kitchen and brought home wonderful food (I hate the word “gourmet”, but you could probably use it to describe the type of food) that they had made. On the last day of class, the kids prepared and served a multi-course evening dinner for their families. It was a great experience for the kids and stands out as one the highlights of their summer.
One of my favorite moments during the week was an evening when my son lectured me on how “crappy” our knives are and explained the qualities needed in good kitchen knives. We did not buy new knives, but I was excited to see that he was learning from the class and I enjoyed his passion for it.
My daughter also went to a one day camp right before Thanksgiving where she made pies (apple, pumpkin and one of the best pecan pies I have ever had) for Thanksgiving.
Kitchen Coach has classes for both kids and for adults and they also do special classes for birthday parties, friends and work groups. And, Deb Brownstein who runs the school also does professional catering through Mangia Bene Catering. You can learn more about all that they do here.
Wow! This is really cool! I have no idea such a thing existed in Maple Leaf. I just may have to sign-up for some classes! They have a pasta making class that sounds just about right.
