Saturday, May 4, 9-11 AM, breakfast on pancakes and more at the Lake City Community Center (12531 28th NE) to support environmental school for the 4th and 5th graders at Sacajawea Elementary (where many Pinehurst neighborhood students go). It’s just $5 a person or a mere $20 a household. 100% of the proceeds go to the kids. The Lake City Lion’s Club donates the food, prep, and venue. This month’s artwork is by Lucia. She drew her picture at last year’s Pinehurstfest. Take a walk to the pocket park and view this fine picture in the kiosk. The park is at NE 117th St & 19th Ave NE. The park is in fine shape after the recent gardening event there. Thanks, Lucia, for sharing your beautiful work! If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 10712 5th Ave NE. We’ve started some board games and other community events in the past. And talked about others. But I thought it was worth calling out some ongoing events at Boud’s Pinehurst Pub. Partly because I’m there almost every week for Trivia. And think more people should join me. :¬)
What other events are going on in the neighborhood that people should know about? I took this class last year and it was one of the most inspiring classes I’ve ever taken. If you want to get more involved in your community I think this is a great opportunity. If you’re intimidated on where to start or wanting to expand your skills to go further, this is a great class! Also, if you’re considering it and have any questions or want help on the application, feel free to ask: phillip@pinehurstseattle.org It’s due next Wednesday, May 8th! Dead and injured wildlife can be picked up by Seattle Animal Control by calling 206-386-7387. If it is under 15 pounds, it may be double bagged and put in your garbage can. For information about our common wild animals, see this page on the Seattle Animal Shelter website. You can also take injured wildlife to PAWS in Lynnwood. If you found a wild animal you think may be injured or sick, call PAWS Wildlife Center at 425-412-4040. A trained staff member will help you determine if the animal needs help and guide you through what to do next. Pets If you find a dead or injured pet and you don’t know who its owner is, Seattle Animal Control will pick it up (206-386-7387). If you choose to take an injured stray pet to a veterinarian, be prepared to be responsible for treatment costs. Discuss costs before allowing treatment. Sometimes veterinarians have funds for injured animals brought in by good Samaritans. Use caution when approaching an animal. Should you succeed in getting close enough to capture it, you stand a good chance of being scratched or bitten! More information on handling stray pets will be a future topic.
Gigabit Seattle is about 10-15% of the way towards its goal to bring ultra-fast broadband to the community in 2013. Citizens are hoping this service will bring some competition to Comcast. In the May-June time frame Gigabit Seattle plans to announce, in conjunction with the Mayor’s office, details such as:
Please keep in mind it doesn’t plan on having precise boundaries, but rather flexible boundaries based on demand. So we in Pinehurst who aren’t on the map can show demand by signing up for updates at http://gigabitseattle.com/signup/ To learn more, go to http://gigabitseattle.com/ Reminder – it’s time to clean up and weed the Pinehurst Pocket Park. Come meet your neighbors and join the work party on Sunday, April 21, at 9:30 a.m. The park is on the corner of NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE. Bring garden gloves, favorite weeding tools, and buckets. Wheelbarrows, rakes and pitchforks are also very helpful. Join the fun and get in the spirit for Earth Day, which is the following day. |
