Pinehurst Pets – Leash Laws

pets

All pets, except cats and pigeons, are required to be on-leash when off their own property. The obvious exception is when the pet is at an off-leash park.

1 – If you see an animal running loose, it’s neighborly to let the owner know before taking further steps (we will deal with stray animals in a future post). The owner might not be aware that the pet is loose and will be grateful you took the time to tell them. Even if they know the animal is loose, such as letting their dog out to poop, they might not be aware that the dog is leaving the yard. Try to work out a reasonable solution in a friendly, neighborly manner.

2 – If talking to the owner doesn’t yield satisfactory results, you can file a complaint. Call the Seattle Animal Shelter at (206) 386-7387 or file a complaint online. Upon a first complaint, a letter will be sent to the pet owner notifying them that a leash law violation complaint has been filed and that they must take appropriate steps to prevent a second incident.

3 – If the violation occurs again, you can call the Shelter and speak to a representative.  The rep will send you a declaration form to fill out.  In addition, an officer will be sent to the residence to investigate.  No further enforcement action will be taken before your completed declaration is received by the Shelter.  Document the nature and the extent of the problem in the declaration.  Be thorough and honest, as you are signing this document under penalty of perjury.

If six months has passed between complaints regarding leash law issues, the complaint process will return to step two and start over again.

Seattle Animal Shelter’s website is http://www.seattle.gov/animalshelter/ and its hours and location are here.

Our next post will cover injured or dead animals, including wildlife.

Kids Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

Eleanor-Flower

Eleanor drew this pretty flower last summer at Pinehurstfest.  Her picture is on display right now in the Pinehurst Pocket Park kiosk. The park is at NE 117th St & 19th Ave NE.

April is the perfect month to celebrate our wealth of green vegetation and our beautiful flowering trees, bushes and, well, flowers!  Thanks, Eleanor, for leading the celebration and brightening our park.

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 10712 5th Ave NE.

Pinehurst Pets – Molly

Molly

Molly is a rescue dog. Her former owner didn’t feed her, and she was starving.  Now, a sturdy 4-5 year old, she’s all better, and she’s full of beans. But that early food scarcity experience shaped her behavior. She’s a dedicated kitchen counter surfer, an avid garbage can diver, and a sharp-eyed hunter of worms (which she eats, yum).

If you would like to see your pet featured in the Pinehurst Pets column, please send a photo and a story about your pet to nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

Pinehurst Pocket Park Work Party April 21

PPPSpringtime has arrived! It’s time to clean up and weed the pocket park. Come meet your neighbors and join the work party on Sunday, April 21, at 9:30 a.m.

The park is on the corner of NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE.

Bring garden gloves, favorite weeding tools, and buckets. Wheelbarrows, rakes and pitchforks are also very helpful.

Join the fun and get in the spirit for Earth Day, which is the following day.

Pinehurst Pets – Seattle Animal Shelter

petsThe Seattle Animal Shelter is responsible for enforcing the laws and codes involving animals within the City of Seattle. Humane Animal Law Enforcement Officers work seven days a week to ensure human and animal safety within Seattle.  Call (206) 386-7387 to ask a question or file a complaint. (If you have a life-threatening situation involving both humans and animals, call 911.)

All complaints are prioritized depending on the nature of the call. As you will see in future posts, filing a complaint is not necessarily the first step; often it is wise to first communicate with the pet owner to try to work out a mutually satisfactory solution to the problem.
