Trash collection on Friday; where to recycle styrofoam?

This is a friendly reminder about trash collection this week and next week. Due to Christmas and New Year’s, the normal  Thursday residential collection will occur on Friday.  (I think everyone in Pinehurst is on Thursday collection, but you can look up your collection day here.)

If you’d like to recycle stryofoam, Styro Recycle in Renton by Ikea will take clean, white stryofoam. I usually collect it in a box in my garage and drop it off whenever I have another reason to be in or passing through Renton. There’s also Busy Beaver Recycling in Everett, but I haven’t been there.

Beware Water Line Insurance Scam

A Pinehurst resident has received several letters from insurance companies wanting to sell her insurance in case there’s a leak or break in the water line between the water meter and the street. This is a scam, and if you get such a letter, don’t fall for it.

We are responsible for the line from the house to the meter, but Seattle Public Utilities is responsible for the line from the meter to the street. You do NOT benefit from insurance for that section.

Want to Volunteer in the Neighborhood?

I’m cross-posting this from the Facebook group to make sure everybody sees it.

We had a lot of discussion at our last community meeting about people volunteering on projects in the neighborhood. Would people be interested in helping spread the word about the blog, Facebook group, email lists and other things going on in the neighborhood?

This could take many forms depending on feedback but I’m picturing us coming up with a flier with all the information and breaking the neighborhood into small walking lists to suit the people who volunteer. And people would just walk 4-5 blocks or whatever they’re interested in, get to know their neighbors, and spread the word to those who aren’t already part of these communities. I know some people are intimidated by this but you really shouldn’t be. You’re not selling anything, you’re not talking politics, you’re just meeting your nearby neighbors.

I’ve been planning this for a while but I’m hoping to expedite it to add the Gigabit Seattle signup to the list. I’d love for us to be the most active neighborhood in the city. And force them to cover our whole neighborhood in super fast Internet.

If you’re interested comment below (with contact information) or email me at phillip@pinehurstseattle.org.

Want Really Fast Internet?

There’s been some discussion about it on Facebook but I wanted to share this here. I’ve received confirmation that demand is one of the qualifications for access to the new gigabit Internet! So we might be able to get it in the rest of our neighborhood sooner than we think. You DO NOT have to be in those boundaries to sign up. We’re trying to show that there’s demand nearby and I know that the dark fiber runs north through our neighborhood so it should be easy to expand.

If you’re at all Interested please sign up at http://gigabitseattle.com/signup/

This is not a commitment, just showing them who’s interested. If you’ve got any questions, please email me at phillip@pinehurstseattle.org.

Update on Sound Transit Plan – Northgate to Lynnwood

Representatives from the Sound Transit Lynnwood Link Extension project gave a presentation at the Pinehurst Community Council meeting last Thursday as we munched pizza at Amante Pizza.

Currently there are six options under consideration for the light rail going through Pinehurst. All of them include the rail being on the east side of the I-5 corridor. The options include variations on whether the rail at certain segments is at grade level or is elevated.

Under consideration is a station at NE 130th St or at NE 145th St.

A station at NE 130th would be either at grade or elevated, and it would use surface parking, including the park and ride plus some new leased space.

A station at NE 145th would be elevated and it would include a new parking garage.

The plan is for Metro buses to feed the station for convenient access. It behooves us to make our voices heard at Metro so it knows we are expecting good bus service and so it can budget accordingly.

All alternatives would include pedestrian and bike improvements in the area.

The rail will be designed so that the neighborhood experiences no more noise than currently. This year engineers took baseline noise readings at 80 locations. Many other considerations are being addressed in the Environmental Impact Statement, such as the Thornton Creek Watershed and wetlands, social impacts, air quality, electromagnetic fields, parkland and open space, and more.

Project completion is scheduled for 2023, a long way out, but it’s in our interest to be aware of the process and to be involved. This summer there will be a formal comment process. Comments can be sent any time via the project web site.

For more information on the project, including schedule, see the project web site at  http://projects.soundtransit.org/Projects-Home/Lynnwood-Link-Extension.xml. You can sign up for email updates on that page, on the left, under Recent Updates.

North Precinct Advisory Council Minutes for Dec 2012

This month’s special topic was North Precinct’s current project using Seattle’s Chronic Nuisance Property ordinance to work with the owner of Orion Motel on Aurora to reduce the crime and nuisance emanating from it.

See that and other public safety news in the minutes here.

*** Thanks to all Pinehurst folks who donated socks this year – the North Precinct collected over 1700 socks, hats, scarves and gloves for the needy.

Sacajawea Wins Neighborhood Funds Award

Seattle Department of Neighborhoods has just awarded Sacajawea Elementary School PTA $99,577 to  implement the first phase of the redevelopment of the upper playground. This includes the restoration of the existing wetland and buffers, and the construction of the new playground and play structures. The PTA will contribute $146,320 in matching volunteer effort.

We mention this because many of our children go to Sacajawea!

Kids Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

This month’s art in the pocket park is by Eleanor. She drew it at last summer’s Pinehurstfest. Come see it in the kiosk in the park at NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE. Thanks, Eleanor, it looks really good!

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 539 NE Northgate Way.
