Seattle Community Court – Source of Support for Neighborhood Projects

We should keep in mind a relatively new source of community help for our neighborhood projects.  Since 2005, the Seattle Community Court has been giving certain low-level crime offenders the opportunity to do community service and hook up with social services instead of doing jail time.  The Court partners with community organizations as community service sites, employing a wide range of volunteers, including AmeriCorps members.  Read more about the reasons it was started and how it is benefitting both the offenders and the city here.

We can ask the Court for help on various projects such as trash pick-up, graffiti removal, or just about anything.  The workers wear orange vests, and depending on the job, an AmeriCorps staff member may supervise.  But another model is to just have them work side by side with us.  Only offenders who are deemed to be no public threat, and whose crimes are of a certain non-serious nature, are eligible for this program.

You may have seen the Lake City mural that was completed recently.  It was a project that used these individuals.

So let’s remember this great resource when we plan events in our neighborhood!

Halloween Safety Tips

It’s that time again!  Check out safety tips for keeping your kids safe on the Seattle Police Deptartment Web site:

http://www.seattle.gov/police/prevention/Seasonal/halloween.htm

It is also important to ensure that your home is safe and accessible to trick-or-treaters. As adults there are some very simple things we can do to make the evening safe for everyone:

  • Turn on your porch light.
  • Move candle-lit jack-o-lanterns off the porch where kids get bunched up if they are trick-or-treating in groups.
  • Remove objects from your yard that might present a hazard.
  • Drive slowly all evening – you never know what creature may suddenly cross your path.
  • Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police.

For your own safety, don’t let trick or treaters into your home unless you know them.

Enjoy the holiday!

Half A Bridge…

15thCatUnder-e1286486104534I feel like I should be continuing that title with some sort of witty response but if I work too hard on that the post won’t go up at all.

SDOT has updated their blog with some new pictures and info on the 15th Avenue Bridge.  It sounds like they’re over half way done and everything is on schedule so far.  Which is always good to hear.  They’re still on track for a spring completion.

(This ride is cross-listed with Cascade Bicycle Club and with Spokespeople North Bicycle Club.)

This approximately 20-mile route starts at Northgate Mall: Enter south end of mall off NE 103rd Street, and park behind the Red Robin: http://seattle.citysearch.com/profile/10799769/seattle_wa/northgate_mall.html#profileTab-maps.

The route includes two sneaky I-5 crossovers. Be prepared for some urban riding, some rolling hills, and a modest climb or two.

We’ll–of course–stop for coffee somewhere along the way to refuel and socialize.

//*NOTES: The pace on the flat is *really* 10-12 mph. We will likely exceed this pace downhill and go up hills more slowly. We’ll wait at the tops of hills as necessary.*//

CONTACT LEADER AHEAD OF TIME ABOUT BRINGING CHILDREN. Map may become available before ride.

This is very short notice (and I appoligise to everybody who gets the email later once this has already passed) but I just got it this morning. It’s exciting to see the Northgate Pointe Building getting used and since it’s a recurring meeting I figure it’s still good information to share.

Treehouse Coffee breakfast special this weekend (October 2-3)

From Michele: “October is upon us and so are the delicious treats that pumpkin, squash and gingerbread offer! We are happily carrying the spicy Morning Glory Chai and my new found favorite drink is a Morning Glory Chai with a splash of Pumpkin Pie sauce. Oh so heavenly!

This weekend I will whip up a batch of hollandaise sauce to delight those with an affinity for Eggs Benedict- your choice of Black Forest Ham or tomato slices. Thanks for saying hello!”

Volunteer for Adopt-A-Street Work Party October 16

Our community council has joined the city’s Adopt-A-Street program.  Starting small, we’ve signed up for these streets:

  • Pinehurst Way NE – from Roosevelt Way NE to NE 125th St
  • NE 115th St – from 20th Ave NE to Pinehurst Way NE

Our first work party will be Saturday, October 16 at 10 a.m.  To get our feet wet (ha ha, this could be literally true!) it will be a small group to assess how it goes, so I am looking for 3 volunteers to round out a group of 4.  It shouldn’t take long.  I’ve ordered grabbers, rubber gloves, safety vests and a sharps container.  If you are interested in helping, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

At this point I’m mostly interested in picking up litter, not leaves and other natural debris, but we can adjust our plan if we wish as we develop the program.  Our commitment is for four cleanup events over the next year.  Volunteering for October 16 does NOT commit you to future work parties. 🙂

If you participate, you will sign a volunteer sign-in sheet that gives you insurance coverage during the event.  I’ll go over safety precautions with everyone.

Information about the program is at: http://www.cityofseattle.net/util/Services/Garbage/KeepSeattleClean/Adopt-A-Street.

Let’s clean up our neighborhood!
