New Leadership for Pinehurst (Update)

Last week, I posted about the need for new people to lead projects in the neighborhood. Here is a list of the projects that need leaders and the status of the search:

Jackson Park Trail – The next step for this project is working with a design firm to work with the neighborhood and Parks and Recreation to refine the trail plan. Funding and resources are already there. And, I am happy to be a resource and to help out as asked. This is a very exciting project and will be highly rewarding on many levels for whoever takes it on. A few people have expressed some interest in this project.

North District Council – The council meets monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at Lake City Library. Representatives from all the neighborhoods in North District (Cedar Park, Meadowbrook, Lake City, Olympic Hills, Maple Leaf, Pinehurst) attend the monthly meeting and are briefed on city-wide issues and have a chance to network with other neighborhoods on issues that impact all of us. City Council and City department heads often attend these meetings. Phillip Duggan has volunteered to be the new Pinehurst rep to North District Council.

North Precinct Advisory Council/Crime Prevention Efforts – The council meets monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at North Precinct (on Meridian near North Seattle Community College). Crime prevention is one of the top issues of concern for Pinehurst neighbors. If this is an issue for you, here is a way to make a difference. A few people have expressed some interest in this role.

Pinehurst Community Council – The council meets to share information with community members on current issues. The meeting schedule can be as needed or three times annually (as was done this past year based on neighborhood feedback). One person has expressed interest in running for President of Pinehurst Community Council.

Pinehurstfest – The annual Pinehurst neighborhood social event has been well attended for the past two years. Local musicians and business owners have been very supportive of the event and look forward to a 2010 event. Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Meadowbrook Community Center has helped us in planning and executing the event. And, there is a team of hard-working and creative neighborhood organizers who have made the event a success.

115th Sidewalk – NE 115th St between 5th Ave NE and Pinehurst Way NE should have a sidewalk. We have a design and a group of neighbors who want to see the project realized. The issue is funding. The project needs a tenacious cheerleader to keep it on the radar of city leaders so that when funding opens up, this project

I-5, an AK-47 and "Living in a camo tent covered in ghillie material"

By now, most of you probably already know about the incident that occurred in Northgate last night that shut down I-5 between 145th and Lake City Way. Two suspects were arrested in the incident that involved gunfire in the North Seattle Community College area. Here is the report from the Seattle Police Blotter:

Two arrested after firing shots near North Seattle Comm. College

On 8/28/09, at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 100 blk of N 90th St. After the arrival of officers, shots were heard North of that location near the area of I-5. Officers continued to search the area and then heard more shots near the SE corner of North Seattle Community College that borders the SB lanes of I-5. As officers converged on the area numerous rifle shots were then fired within 50 yards of officers. The suspect was using tracer ammunition and several red tracer rounds were seen fired into the air from the wooded area. As officers took cover, the suspect fired approx 12-15 more rounds in a rapid fire mode. Officers contained the area of the campus and called for SWAT and Guardian One. The shots were obvious rifle shots and were fired approx 25 yards away from I-5, so the decision was made to shut down both North and Southbound I-5. Guardian One was able to locate two suspects.. Both suspects were attempting to hide and would make periodic attempts to crawl through the brush. SWAT worked in conjunction with Guardian One and attempted to isolate the suspects. After approximately one hour the suspects split up with one crossing both lanes of I-5 to the East, before deciding to come back over to the original area and he was taking into custody without incident. The suspect in custody told officers that the second suspect was still armed with an AK47 before they split up. The second suspect managed to elude officers for another two hours before he was finally caught. K-9 officers did a search for evidence and was able to locate an AK47 rifle, and an ammo can with multiple live rounds. Suspect # 1 was booked for obstructing, and suspect #2 was booked for Investigation of Violation of Uniform Firearms Act and Reckless Endangerment. Both suspects are white male young adults.

No injuries or property damage.

August 17, 2009 – Monday

Living in a camo tent covered in ghillie material.

Its not so bad and I meet new people who dont have as good a set up. We are told to fall in line from Birth do exactly what your told and dont function in the here and now. Dont live for the moment dont be origional or creative. So we can meet another college brat on there way to a 4 year degree and between the two of you, you can actually make enough for a house and a car the American Dream with pretty children. Thats a bunch of crap people buy into and the market gets inflated by those divided delusional masses that actually do what there told. They are the ones that put there kids into Boy Scouts or Brownies, they are the ones that are so uptight keeping there fragile world together that they hate Osama Bin Laden so much they want to water board anyone that ever met the guy. Now there was a moment that I experienced a fraction of the stress of the type of life that most people consider normal. That was enough. Ive found a way out.

My plan was set into motion over a year ago and the only difference is Im doing thing better now and have lost alot of weight. Im the invisible man. Happy and free I make up stew for visitors like Yoda, I puff a bowl with them of smoke and send them on there way. I live in a grove of plum trees a forgotten part of a Orchard, Plum Wine takes 3 years to ferment. There are berries and I have a alcohol stove. I dont need no TV. No Internet, No lights, and the best part is its free, and I can take my showers at Greenlake. I just need to put myself somewhere more challenging farther away from Seattle. But the problem is the Granite Falls is the closest place to the wilderness with the ammenitys that I need to live in the forest forever.

To be honest one day I will own several houses but still prefer a camo tent covered in Ghillie material. I will be one of the most odd millionares on Earth. But forsure the most secure.

Someone is looking forward to the new bakery at the Pinehurst Safeway

New Leadership for Pinehurst

A while back, I posted that I am trying to spend more time with my husband and kids and to volunteer in some other activities that are also important to me. I am now moving forward on that and stepping aside to allow new people to lead projects in the neighborhood. Garth Ferber of Pinehurst Community Council is also going through a similar process. If you have been wanting to step up and put your own stamp on things, now is the time.

Warning – Heritage Marketing magazine salesman

I am forwarding this from an Olympic Hills neighbor.

I just had a door to door magazine salesperson come to my door trying to sell me a magazine subscription. He claimed to be with Heritage Marketing. He told me that he lived in the neighborhood. I asked him where and he pointed to the ______’s house and said his father told him that I was a good neighbor to ask for help with his attempt to raise funds to travel to London to recreate the first four episodes of Faulty Towers with John Cleese (???). I asked what his father’s name was and he said that he was not allowed to tell me. I pushed it a little further and he got irate with me and left. So, I put my shoes on and followed him up the street. I asked him some more questions to see if he would provide his identity. No go. I explained to him that he had just lied to me and that misrepresenting himself like that is not ok. He claimed to be a student at WSU, that he lived in Bellevue, and that he was a communications major. I did a quick search on line on Heritage Marketing and two scam stories popped up that are nearly identical to my experience with this guy. I called the police. They are looking for him right now.
If you see this guy, call the police. He is about 20, 5-11, roughly 180 pounds, blue eyes, black hair, blue t shirt with a screenprinted graphic, beige cargo shorts, and white basketball shoes. He is carrying a black folder with transaction slips for Heritage Marketing as well as three laminated cards – two that show the magazines available, and one that has the names of local veterans that will supposedly vouch for him.
Here is a link to the other story that is almost identical-

UPDATE:
I have heard from many Pinehurst neighbors who have also had visits by similar magazine salespeople in the past month. Please pass on this warning regarding magazine salespeople to your neighbors who do not read the blog or who are not on the neighborhood mailing list.

Note however, that there are still many legitimate and trustworthy individuals who go door to door. For example, I understand that there are canvassers in our neighborhood working on election campaigns and on healthcare reform issues. Please use judgement and common sense and ask for identification as it seems appropriate.

Pinehurst Safeway Rezone

The Pinehurst Safeway rezone will be on the Seattle City Council Planning Land Use and Neighborhoods Committee Agenda on Wednesday, September 9th. More details soon.
