Host a Pinehurst People’s Street

Seattle’s People’s Street program is coming back in 2018 for the 4th year. The program supports Seattle neighborhoods to create temporary, pedestrian-only streets by closing off certain city blocks to vehicles and opening them up for, well, for whatever you can think of: a dance, a yoga session, a potluck, a kids’ playtime….

The goals of the People’s Street program are to

  • Help the community create fun, relaxing, and safe spaces for pedestrians to explore events and socialize, especially during times of high-pedestrian traffic
  • Collaborate with community groups, businesses, and residents to explore ideas for expanding space and activities for pedestrians in the participating neighborhood

So, what are your ideas? Where would you put one? Are you willing to host a people street?

Applicants need to submit a detailed proposal by March 2, 2018. Go here for more information.

Community Meeting with Debora Juarez

By John Lombard

You are invited to the next meeting of the D5 Community Network, which will feature a question and answer session with District 5 City Councilmember Debora Juarez, on Tuesday, February 13, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Seattle Mennonite Church in Lake City, 3120 NE 125th St.

The church has a parking lot behind it, accessed through a driveway just to the east of the church on NE 125th St, but if you can carpool, take public transit, walk or bicycle to the meeting, that will be easier on both the environment and the surrounding community.

We have asked Councilmember Juarez to discuss action and prospects for action on community priorities as they were identified at our community meeting with her last September 19. The poster sheets with comments from attendees at that meeting will be up again at this meeting. We also will end this meeting with introductions of community groups from District 5 that are present at the meeting and a discussion of next steps for the D5 Community Network itself.

I hope you can join us! Please circulate this notice to anyone you know who lives or works in District 5 who you think might be interested to attend. All are welcome. A formal meeting flyer will be going out within the next week.

2017 Pinehurst/Northgate Find It, Fix It Update Report

Here is a report of the results of the Find It, Fix It Community Walk we did April 2017. It shows actions that were completed, those in progress, and things they have no plans to do. Read it here. <—Note that because the file is too big to put on WordPress (this blog site), clicking on the link downloads it. If you don’t want to download it, if you have a Facebook account you can read it on the Pinehurst Facebook page instead.

2018 Your Voice Your Choice

Time to submit our ideas for park improvements and pedestrian and street safety feature improvements. Last year Pinehurst benefited from this process and we can do it again this year if we submit ideas and vote for them. Below are some dates for brainstorming project ideas. 2018 Lake City Library Renovation

Lake City Library is getting a big make-over in 2018. It’s one of the most heavily used libraries in the Seattle system. Its Homework Help program is the most used in the city. In mid-April it will close for six months for renovation. If you put books on hold, you can designate a different library for pick-up for the duration. They are trying to find a place to position a drop box so we can still go to Lake City to return books, but that depends on how extensive the fencing is and other considerations.

The library especially needs more community space, such as meeting rooms, kids’ books, space for teen programs, etc.

Because the building is a landmark, designated by the Landmarks Preservation Board, the footprint will not be expanded. Instead, the existing space will be reconfigured. For instance, the area between the two sets of entrance doors, including where the bathrooms are, will be incorporated into the library. Some staff area will become public area.

There will be five meeting rooms, the largest can hold up to 120 people, double the number in the current largest room. There will be new furnishings and some new shelving. The number of books will not change.

Now here’s the thing: The library system budget is covering $3 million, and Seattle Library Foundation (SLF) is raising the other half million. SLF would like to raise $100,000 from Lake City and the surrounding areas (like Pinehurst). It would like to get $50,000 in small donations, and a benefactor will match with the other $50,000. SOOOO, if you would like to help, your donation of any amount would be most welcome. If you donate at least $50, your name can be listed at the library somewhere. Do you know a local business that you could ask to donate?

To make a donation, go to the SLF website to donate, click on Ways to Give, choose from the drop-down list Donate Now, choose your donation amount, click on Direct My Gift To, and choose from the drop-down list Lake City Branch Renovation. I imagine you could also drop off a check at the library, or mail one to the Foundation, but you’d have to research those options. Here is the SLF website: http://foundation.spl.org/
