Hate Crime Awareness Event February 8th

In this season of increased animosity & intolerance, what can we do to help when we see a hate crime? How can we help tamp down the vitriol? We had hoped to have a guest speaker at our December Pinehurst Community Council meeting speak on how to help make Pinehurst a hate-free community, but demand for speakers was too high and we couldn’t secure one. This Lake City event will be a great alternative:

Pinehurst Pets – Julien

2016-12-18Julien

Have you ever tried to photograph a black cat? It’s really hard. Have you ever tried to DRAW a black cat? It’s nearly impossible (well, a real artist could do it probably). So here’s Julien, a black Pinehurst cat who’s hard to photograph, not just because he’s black, but in this case because he was writhing around on his perch daring me to get a good shot. He does manage to look rather …. fetching, no? Julien moved here from West Seattle last year. He says he likes it here except for when a neighbor cat looks in the window at him and his sister.

If you’d like your pet featured, please send a photo and its name and a short description or story to nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

Classical Concert in Haller Lake!

bach

Some of you may be aware that Haller Lake, our neighbor to the north, has an intimate, casual classical music venue at Haller Lake United Methodist Church (13055 1st Ave. NE., Seattle). For about 25 years the church has hosted the Haller Lake Music Series, which offers mostly monthly freewill-donation concerts. The performers tend to be local musicians whom you can meet and chat with after the concert. I’ve enjoyed a number of concerts there over the years. I love having a very local music venue! Here’s its website: https://hallerlakemusic.com/

A special fundraiser concert is planned there on Saturday, January 21, from 7 pm to 9 pm., with all proceeds benefiting the Bach in the Subways international movement. What’s that? Bach in the Subways’s goal is to bring as much Bach, and classical music in general, for free, to as many people as possible, especially to those who otherwise wouldn’t hear live classical music. And where do you find a lot of people in Seattle? In public spaces like Light Rail stations, ferry terminals; malls; libraries – you get the picture. Funds raised at this benefit will support dozens of musicians throughout Greater Seattle as they offer free performances, without pay, of Bach’s music in public places March 18-21 in celebration of Bach’s birthday. Read more about Bach in the Subways at http://bachinthesubways.org/seattle/

Anyway, tickets for the benefit concert in Haller Lake on January 21 are available through Brown Paper Tickets (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2724778) and will also be sold at the door 30 minutes before the concert. I hope to see you there!

Neighbor Day is February 11

DeptOfNeighborhoodsSeattle’s Neighbor Day Celebration invites us to indulge in random acts of kindness. The 23rd annual Neighbor Day is February 11. Time to plan! It’s a special day set aside to reach out to neighbors, make new friends, and express thanks to those who help make our neighborhood a great place to live.

Below is a list of ideas and resources that can help plan a Neighbor Day event or activity:

  • Do something nice for a neighbor: take them to coffee, clean up their yard, bake them some cookies, invite them for a walk.
  • Organize a neighborhood potluck, open house, or work party. It can be as big or simple as you want.
  • Need more ideas? Here is an extensive list to help you.
  • Want to know how your local business or community group can participate? Here are some ideas!
  • If your event is open to the public, you can post it to the online events calendar.
  • Use this flyer to post around the neighborhood or work area to remind people of the day.
  • Share a “great neighbor” story or tell how you are celebrating by tagging Department of Neighborhoods on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and using #NeighborDay.
