Seattle to Announce Safer Speed Limits!

Street safety has been a hot topic in the Pinehurst community, especially due to the opening of our new Hazel Wolf school but also in general. Now, Seattle has finally decided to do something about it.

Seattle City Council members and SDOT directory Scott Kubly are going to make an announcement about a change to Seattle’s speed limit policy at noon tomorrow.

speed_limit2The attached flyer doesn’t elaborate on the announcement, but according to Gordon Padelford, Policy Director of Seattle Neighbourhood Greenways, the new limits will be 20 MPH on non-arterials and 25 MPH on select arterials.

When: Tuesday, September 13, noon
Where: Horizon House, 900 University St., 98101

Here’s hoping that the Pinehurst Way / Roosevelt corridor running right by the Hazel Wolf school will be designated as a 25-MPH zone.

Pinehurst Pets – Nova

Nova-RachelBailey

Don’t let her cuteness fool you, Nova  is one feisty pooch. She was a stray and spent 9 months in the shelter. Her person got her in February and feels so lucky. She is fear-reactive towards strangers and dogs sometimes but they’re working on it slowly. At home she is such a clown and zooms around the tiny apartment, hence her name. She loves belly rubs and keeping a vigilant watch on the neighborhood.

Kids’ Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

Salmon-Nat

Check out the colorful salmon in the kiosk this month at Pinehurst Pocket Park! Earlier in the summer Thornton Creek Alliance hosted an event over at Meadowbrook called The Influence of the Confluence. TCA had a table for kids to color these salmon posters. A teenager named Nat volunteered to give me the one she was coloring for the park. So thanks to Nat for this splash of color! Check it out; the park is on the corner of NE 117th & 19th Ave NE.

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 10712 5th Ave NE.

Adopt-A-Street Litter Pickup Event Sunday Sept 4

logo-seattle-adopt-a-streetPinehurst Community Council participates in the City’s Adopt-A-Street program.  We’ve adopted these streets for occasional litter pickup:

  • Pinehurst Way NE – from Roosevelt Way NE to NE 125th St
  • NE 115th St – from 20th Ave NE to Pinehurst Way NE

Our next work party will be Sunday, September 4th, at 10:00 am.  It takes about two hours, but you aren’t committed to the whole time if that’s too long for you. We have grabbers, bags, brooms and a sharps container.  You bring work gloves. If you are interested in helping, please email  nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

We’ll meet at the northeast corner of Pinehurst Way and NE 115th St, rain or shine.

This is a fun event – we work in pairs and have good laughs over some of the stuff we put in our garbage bags. And it’s always nice when a neighbor honks or gives us a thumbs-up for our efforts!

Our commitment is for four cleanup events a year, but volunteering for this event does NOT commit you to future work parties.

If you participate, you’ll sign a volunteer sign-in sheet that gives you insurance coverage during the event.  I’ll go over safety precautions with everyone before we start.

Information about the City’s program is at:

http://www.seattle.gov/util/environmentconservation/getinvolved/adoptastreet/.

If you haven’t contacted Nancy and want to show up on the spur of the moment, that’s fine.

Come on and join the party, meet your neighbors and make a difference!

Pinehurst Pets – Cheeks

Cheeks-AnneMarcus
Here is handsome Cheeks’ story, told by one of his people: “We adopted Cheeks in March from the Humane Society. He was originally called Mr. Cheeks but I thought Cheeks sounded more gangster. They found him at 4 years old on the mean streets of Tacoma. He’s 14 lbs of fluffy love. He loves to roll over and have his tummy rubbed. He talks to us at all hours (not always appreciated!). When he’s not laying on one of us, his favorite spot is in his cat tree keeping watch over our backyard.”

If you’d like your pet featured, please send a photo and its name and a short description or story to nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

Pinehurst Pets – Minou

Minou
Minou (pronounced me-new) was inherited from a friend who was French, and his current owners were told that his name is a French term of endearment meaning “little one.”  He is anything but little!  Minou is a big, friendly kitty who is also very sociable.  He enjoys looking out over all the goings-on in the neighborhood from his hiding spot in the front yard.  He is a wonderful kitty who has won his owners’ hearts.
