Gas Safety Information

Probably everyone haPSEs heard about the horrible gas explosion in Greenwood last week. Here is some timely gas safety information from Puget Sound Energy:

For gas safety information, visit http://pse.com/safety/NaturalGasSafety/Pages/Detect-a-Leak.aspx

For PSE claims, call 1-888-225-5773.

Gas Safety Tips

Who is responsible for the gas line to your home?
PSE is responsible for the gas line up to the meter. The customer is responsible for gas lines after the meter, except in rare instances where PSE installed the line and agreed to maintain it.

How often should people be checking their gas lines to inspect for a leak?  PSE educates our customers on how to detect a natural gas leak – smell, sound and sight – and steps to take if they do suspect a leak. You should keep your gas appliances in good repair to protect against gas leaks and prevent incomplete combustion, which can create carbon monoxide. And if you have an underground line on your side of the meter, you should inspect it periodically for signs of corrosion.

What should people do if they suspect a leak?  If you suspect that you have a natural gas leak, leave the area immediately and call PSE (at 1-888-225-5773) or 911. Don’t do anything that might create a spark, including flipping any switches. And don’t worry that it might be a false alarm. PSE will immediately dispatch a technician to check that your area is safe, at no charge.

Can people/business turn off the gas lines themselves or does that require PSE’s help? Customers can turn their gas off themselves at the meter, but PSE believes it’s safer to evacuate and call PSE or 911. If you do turn off the gas, you should not turn it on yourself. Only PSE should do that.

North Precinct Advisory Council Minutes for March 2016

SPDbadgeThis month’s guest speaker was Fire Chief Harold Scoggins of the Seattle Fire Department. SFD took 92,000 calls in 2014. It’s number one challenge is the rising call load, mostly due to emergency medical needs. Another challenge is the fast growth of building and development currently occurring, which creates a bigger inspection load for fire fighters, and the backlog slows down developers.

The investigation of the officer-involved shooting in the 2200 block of NE 85th continues. The man who was killed did have a gun in a holster on his hip. When he reached for the gun, officers shot him.

Crimes against persons are trending slightly lower year-to-date, but we continue to have higher property crime rates. Chief O-Toole has asked that a property crimes task force be created for 30-60 days. It has had some significant successes already.

For much more news, read all the minutes here.

planning_commissionOur City Council Member Debora Juarez alerted us to the fact that our District 5 has no representative on the Seattle Planning Commission. Are you active in the community? Are you interested in advising the Mayor, City Council and city departments on planning issues and help drive policy debate on our city plan, neighborhoods, transportation, housing, and industrial lands? Commissioners serve 3 year terms. If interested, take a look at the link below. And let Council Member Juarez know, too, by contacting sabrina.bolieu@seattle.gov

Volunteer to Usher at Seattle Musical Theatre

9to5bannerCome join Seattle Musical Theatre as a Front of House volunteer for its next show 9 to 5: Pushed to the boiling point by their boss, three over-worked, under-appreciated female co-workers conspire to take control of their company and learn there is nothing they can’t do in this hilarious story of love and revenge in the Rolodex era. Based on the 1979 hit movie of the same name, Dolly Parton’s score, including such hits as “Backwoods Barbie” and the ever-classic “9 to 5” will have you tapping your feet and singing all the way home.

Teens 16 and older may volunteer unaccompanied.  SMT asks those 12-15 to be accompanied by an adult.  Volunteers are asked to arrive an hour and 15 minutes before the show to receive assignments (Will Call, ushers/ticket-takers, concessions, etc.) and stay 10-15 minutes after to help collect programs for recycling and check the auditorium for trash.  Total time commitment is approximately 3.5 hours, and in thanks for your assistance you see the performance and get a soda or water from concessions for free.  Free parking is available on the street or next door at the Magnuson Park Community Center.
The specific dates SMT still needs help are:
Feb. 26     6:15-9:45 p.m.
Feb. 27     6:15-9:45 p.m.
Mar. 4      6:15-9:45 p.m.
Mar. 5      6:15-9:45 p.m.
Mar. 10    6:15-9:45 p.m.
It also needs people with MAST licenses to serve at the wine bar.  The dates still open are:
Feb. 27     6:15-9:45 p.m.
Mar. 4      6:15-9:45 p.m.
Mar. 10    6:15-9:45 p.m.
Mar. 11    6:15-9:45 p.m.
Mar. 13    12:45-4:15 p.m.
Seattle Musical Theatre is located inside Magnuson Park on Sand Point, sharing Building 47 with the Magnuson Park Community Center.  The address is:
7120 62nd Ave NE
Seattle, WA 98115

North Precinct Advisory Council Minutes – February 2016

SPDbadge

This month the guest speakers, directors of Seattle Human Services Department and The King County/Seattle Coalition on Homelessness, discussed homelessness. They explained how the One Night Count was done in late January, and how the recent shooting of five people in The Jungle affected the count.

They also explained the impetus and the goals of the Mayor’s recent declaration of a homelessness crisis. For notes on this discussion, and more news in the north precinct, read the minutes here.
