Here is some info and safety tips about door-to-door sellers from the Seattle Police Department (via Community Police Team Sgt. Newsom’s handout at the North Precinct Advisory Council):
This is the peak time of year for door-to-door sales, including those using traveling sales crews. There are many legitimate companies in this industry with professionally trained salespeople, selling between the hours of 8:00am and 9:00pm, and a long history of law-abiding customer service. There are, however, less reputable companies in this business willing to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals who trust people knocking at their door. Sometimes residents forget to practice good personal safety.
Seattle Police officers respond to calls from citizens concerned about door-to-door salespeople. The results have ranged from the officers checking identification and sending the seller to the City of Seattle Revenue & Consumer Affairs office for their business license, to arrests of individuals wanted on warrants.
Homeowners may consider posting a sign indicating “No agents,” “No peddlers,” or “No Solicitors.” In Seattle, it is unlawful for any residential seller to attempt to gain admittance for the purpose of selling at any residence displaying one of these signs.

This month’s guest speaker at NPAC was Karmin Schuur, an SPD Research Intern. Grad students from Seattle U have a grant from the Seattle Police Foundation to help with the Seattle Police Department micro community policing plans. The plans are individualized priorities and strategies for neighborhoods in the north precinct. Pinehurst is included in the Northgate plan, which can be read here.
In other news, our new Crime Prevention Coordinator has been training for the last two weeks. In February she’ll be ready to start working with community groups and individuals on home security audits, block watch setup, etc. We’ll send out contact information when she’s ready to go.
For all the news in the NPAC minutes, go here.
Do you like classical music but don’t want to go downtown and pay a lot to hear it? Do you like a small, friendly venue with a meet-the-musicians reception after the concert, including free snacks? We have such a venue just a smidge northwest of us, at 1st Ave NE & NE 13oth St. It’s the Haller Lake Music Series which has been offering classical music performances for over 20 years. Performers include local professional musicians, as well as visiting artists
Concerts are held in the Haller Lake United Methodist Church. It’s pay by donation, suggested at $20 adult/$5 kids 18 & under. Most of the money goes to the musicians, and just a little bit goes to incidental costs of the church, which donates the space. You can dress up or go casual, and there’s lots of free parking in the church lot.
Look on its website for more information: http://hallerlakemusic.com/about/.
The next concert is Sunday, February 21 at 3:00, featuring the Lucy Wenger Trio, with piano, cello and clarinet. See the musician bios and the program on the website.

A local school with a lot of neighborhood connections reached out to us about a job opening that might be of interest to somebody in the community.
Hello Pinehurst community! We are the North Seattle French School, a new bilingual elementary school that joined the neighborhood last fall when we moved into a few classrooms at the Seattle Jewish Community School. They have given us a wonderful welcome and we are happy to be part of your community!
We are looking to hire a recess/lunch supervisor and our wonderful English teacher, who lives in the neighborhood, suggested we reach out to our new neighbors!
This paid position is Monday through Friday, noon to 1 PM (Except for school holidays and breaks), to help supervise lunch and recess for our students aged kindergarten through second grade. No French is required, but a love of children, and a willingness to go outside for recess even in some rainy weather, are!
Please contact office@northseattlefrenchschool.com if you are interested! We are also always interested in community volunteers for other types of activities.
Merci beaucoup!

Ten year old Daliah drew this pastoral scene at Pinehurstfest. Go see it in the kiosk this month at Pinehurst Pocket Park, NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE. Thanks, Daliah, for reminding us that we can look forward to spring and summer!
If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 10712 5th Ave NE.
Could your street use traffic calming installations to slow down speeders? Is there somewhere you think a crosswalk should be installed? If you’re one of the lucky ones that has sidewalks, does it need repair?
The city of Seattle is accepting proposals to the Neighborhood Park and Street Fund (NPSF) which supports improvements to neighborhood parks and streets proposed by the community. The deadline for applications is February 8, 2016. The NPSF can be used for projects valued up to $90,000.
To learn more about the fund or to propose a project, visit http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/neighborhood-park-and-street-fund. Any individual, neighborhood group, or business group is eligible and encouraged to apply. This is a great chance improve Pinehurst! And I don’t think you have to do it alone.
