May’s topic was about police accountability bills passed in the 2021 state legislative session, and ramifications for SPD. They are on the governor’s desk for his signature. In general, SPD applauds most of the legislation and looks forward to being partners in the work to implement the bills. In some cases SPD practices are stricter than the new laws.
One concern is about banning military equipment. SPD has some 50 caliber rifles. After a truck plowed into a crowd in France, SPD was concerned as Seafair approached, of copycat crimes, so it bought these weapons and they are the only ones they have that can pierce an engine block to stop a car plowing through a crowd. SPD hopes to have a discussion with the state about it.
