Two weekend incidents near Pinehurst Playfield

Over the weekend, there were two incidents that occurred near Pinehurst Playfield:

Saturday evening: A park neighbor reports that on Saturday evening, September 12th,

two guys in a pickup came by my house…and asked if I’d seen three black males, wearing soccer shirts. I said no and they asked that if I did, please call the police as they had just mugged someone. They sped off, still looking for the muggers, before I could ask any more questions, but the passenger looked kind of beat up and right after that I noticed a police car checking out the area around the park.

I contacted Seattle Police to learn more about the incident. However, there were no reports of a robbery or mugging. There was an officer in the area at the time but he was on a traffic stop. This is another reminder to all of us that if you witness events that cause you concern such as the one described here, please call 911.

Early Sunday: At 5:30 am on Sunday, September 13th, a neighbor called 911 to report 10 to 15 shots fired near 12th Ave NE and NE 120th Street. Additional 911 calls were made from neighbors who lived south of that location and police believe the shooters may have been firing from a car. Due to some concern by officers that the incident might have been related to an earlier incident in Lake City that morning, the response was increased. (I am pretty sure I heard a helicopter.) However, no suspects or victims were located. UPDATE: A few commenters have said that they are pretty sure that the sounds were fireworks and not gunshots. I am trying to confirm whether SPD found evidence of what caused the sounds.

I heard the noise on Sunday morning…pretty sure they were fireworks. You could hear the telltale whistling sounds that bottle rockets make after you hear the initial "pop" sound. Still annoying though…

I was awoken by the noise Sunday morning and I'm also pretty sure it was fireworks. I definitely heard whistling sounds as well, did not sound like gunshots.

Interesting. A mugging where the victims don’t call the police? Sounds more like a drug deal gone bad to me. Like Renee said, if you see something suspicious, be sure to call 911.

As for the gunshots, they were definitely fireworks (though for a split-second, I was thinking gunshots as well). Bottle rockets, no doubt about it. Probably fired-off by the same jackass who used to celebrate every Seahawk victory (or loss) with a barrage of leftovers from the 4th of July! I think the helicopter you heard was actually the drone of the I-5 concrete grinding project. I'll be glad when that's over…

    Be safe out there folks!

In all frankness, I am still trying to learn if there is clarity on the sounds heard in Pinehurst. However, SPD did respond with a helicopter. And, I don't think they would have called a helicopter out or had it out as long as it was out if they thought it was fireworks.

And, I apologize for all the crime news. I hate putting it up because I know it frightens most and draws attention away from the other great things going on in our neighborhood. However, I feel people need to know what is happening and we all need to be reminded to call 911 when incidents occur. If we don't call 911, the rest of the world thinks nothing happens and we do not get the police allocation that we might otherwise get.

It did wake me. It struck me as not fireworks. The intervals of the sounds were more akin to gunshots than fireworks. Also, not sure why someone would be celebrating the Seahawks at 5:30AM before a game?

My husband and I both heard the pops that morning at 5:30a.m. The sound woke us from a deep sleep. Being from the South Side of Chicago, he said that it was definitely multiple (12-15) gun shots.
I do hope that the police find some answers for us.

Awoke to the same sounds described, sounded like gun shots, but were followed by unmistakeable whistling fireworks. I dismissed the initial sounds as plain old firecrackers. I also noticed the odd intervals between the pops as mentioned earlier. This suggests to me someone trying to simulate gunfire or mask it with whistling fireworks afterward. I'm glad that two of the four robbery suspects were caught this week. Sounds like some of their victims might have tried to take the law into their own hands by looking for the muggers without the police.

    Friends,

My wife heard the same sounds and verifies the last report, which is that the cracking (gunshot-like) sounds were followed immediately by whistling firework sounds.

I live right on the corner of NE 120th and 12th Ave NE.

Oh by the way, if anyone saw someone carring a large, corrugated cardboard box in my area(NE 120th or 12th Ave NE), on Saturday, September 19 could you please let me know? Whoever this person is left the large, cardboard box on my property and I would love to return it to him.
I may be contacted at (206) 362-8331 or at emadis@juno.com.
