I think this is great. It can help families afford their homes by off-setting their mortgate with rent. It can add to urban density, which is better for the environment than suburban sprawl. It can create lower-cost rental options within the city. I think the neighborhoods will not suffer at all from backyard cottages. The SE Seattle survey showed that neighbors saw no difference or an improvement in their neighborhood because of backyard cottages. And it is obviously in the owners' best interest to be very choosey about their renters, since they are choosing their own neighbors. I think this is just a smart way to go.
