Safe Routes to Pinehurst School

schoolhouse

The SEPA checklist for proposed road changes around Pinehurst School has been released. The roadways around the new school will be re-channelized as follows if the project proposal is accepted:

– In the north portion on 15th Ave NE between NE 125th and NE 123rd Streets there will be one general purpose travel lane in each direction, a two way left turn lane, bicycle lanes and two hour limit all day parking on both sides of the road.

– In the central portion on 15th Ave NE between NE 123rd Street and on Pinehurst Way NE between NE 117th and NE 115th, where Pinehurst/ Hazel Wolfe School is located, there will be one general purpose travel lane in each direction, buffered bicycle lanes, a school bus loading zone and two hour limit all day parking on one side of the road.

– In the south portion on Pinehurst Way NE south of NE 115th and on Roosevelt Way NE from its intersection with Pinehurst to NE 108th there will be one general purpose travel lane in each direction, a two way left turn lane and buffered bicycle lanes.

Proposed timing or schedule (including phasing, if applicable):

– Restriping Pinehurst Way NE/15th NE and Roosevelt Way NE is scheduled to occur in
fall 2015.

– School zone flashing lights will be installed in summer 2016.

– Sidewalks on 12th Avenue NE between NE 117th Street and Pinehurst Playground and
on NE 113th Street between Roosevelt Way NE and 12th Ave NE are likely to be
constructed in 2016 or 2017 depending on available funds.

Any suggestions of lights at the 6 way corner at NE 115th and Pinehurst? This configuration doesn’t sound less dangerous.

The pedestrian walkway along NE 115th between 15th NE and Lake City Way is commonly used as parking space, forcing pedestrians — including kids headed to Pinehurst, Nathan Hale and Jane Addams — into the street. Better signage? Better enforcement? Install a curb? Make it a real sidewalk?
