4th of July and Fireworks

fireworksTips on fireworks from the Seattle Police Department website:

The Seattle Police Department and Seattle Fire Department would like to remind the public that fireworks are illegal in the City of Seattle.

The possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks are prohibited. Fireworks offenses are gross misdemeanors punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.

Fireworks pose a fire hazard to property and present a safety risk to those who use them. Every year the Seattle Fire Department responds to fireworks-related fires and injuries. The holiday related fires and injuries are preventable.

On the 4th of July, 911 centers become overloaded with non-emergency fireworks calls. DO NOT call 911 unless you have a life-threatening emergency and need immediate help from police, fire or medics. Unnecessary 911 calls block people with real emergencies from reaching 911 and getting help.

Any fireworks-related fires or injuries should be reported directly to 911. Other fireworks violations may be reported by calling the Seattle Police non-emergency number at (206) 625-5011.

Kids Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

HouseAndAppleTree

This month’s art was done at last year’s Pinehurstfest. It is unsigned, so the artist is a mystery. I do remember that his dad helped him a little bit. So thank you to mystery boy and his dad! The colorful drawing is in the kiosk at Pocket Park at NE 117th St & 19th Ave NE.

Be sure to come to Pinehurstfest on July 20, from 2-5 pm at Pinehurst Playfield (more announcements soon). We’ll have the drawing table set up so kids can create more art to display at the park throughout the year.

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 10712 5th Ave NE.

Pinehurst Pets – Zia

Zia (640x480)

This is Zia. She looks a lot like a cute little black bear. Once she got out of the yard and wandered down the street. She stopped at the intersection and just stood there looking lost, I guess. Some nice people rescued her and took her home. They didn’t notice her tags at first, so they took her to a party that night. Zia, the party dog had a big adventure! Luckily she was reunitied with her family soon after.

If you would like to see your pet featured in the Pinehurst Pets column, please send a photo and a story about your pet to nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

Summer Crime

burglarTraditionally, summer sees an uptick in residential burglaries. Mid-day today my neighbor’s nanny scared away a man attempting to enter her house. She asked that I remind everyone that we are still experiencing burglaries and to be aware. Please report to the police (911) attempts to burgle and other suspicious activity, even if the act wasn’t completed or nothing was taken. Remember these safety tips:

  • Many burglaries occur through unlocked doors and windows – be safe and lock up.
  • Keep electronics out of sight of windows to avoid temptation.
  • Keep your eye on neighbors’ homes and report suspicious activity there.
  • If your street is experiencing chronic problems, keep a log of what, when, where.
  • Use 3″ screws and heavy-duty strike plates on your door frames.
  • Trim shrubs for visibility – thieves don’t want to be seen, so don’t give them cover.
  • Use light timers in your home to make it look occupied.
  • Secure exterior doors with deadbolts with at least a 1″ throw.
  • Start a block watch to organize your neighbors.

A great way to meet the neighbors is to participate in National Night Out Against Crime. Many streets organize a block party on August 6th, close off the street, and have a potluck. See http://www.seattle.gov/police/nightout/default.htm for details and to register.

Have a fun – and safe – summer!
