Thanks, too, to Treehouse Coffee Company for being the drop-off location.

Gerry Pollet is New 46th District Representative

Gerry Pollet has been sworn into office to serve as Representative of the 46th District. He’s filling David Frockt’s seat as he was appointed to the 46th District’s Senate seat after Scott White passed away in October.

Pollet, a lawyer, is executive director of Heart of America Northwest, a watchdog group for the cleanup of the Hanford nuclear reservation.

He said he’d be a champion for the environment, education funding and open government. He said he hopes to bring a collaborative style to Olympia, prompting Councilmember Kathy Lambert to ask for examples of Pollet’s working “across the aisle” with Republicans.

Pollet pointed to his work as an officer for the state Coalition for Open Government, whose president is former GOP state Rep. Toby Nixon.

Kids Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

This week’s artist is a bit of a mystery. A child drew it at Pinehurstfest. Is ‘Shagia’ in the bubble the artist’s signature? Regardless, it’s a fine reminder of the sunny summer weather we can look forward to next year. 🙂 Stop by the park at NE 117th St & 19th Ave NE to see this fine picture and take a stroll under the mighty trees.

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 539 NE Northgate Way.

Beware Stolen Mail

One of our Pinehurst neighbors on 24th Ave NE near NE 110th St just reported that this morning he had mail stolen from his mailbox, mail he’d put out for the mail carrier to take. One was an invoice with a credit card number on it.

This is a good opportunity to think about getting locking mail boxes. Some streets have them. They aren’t attractive, but they do the trick. You can get your own, or you can go in with neighbors to get a multiple-slot box.

Taking outgoing mail to a blue U.S. Mail box isn’t as convenient as putting out in your box, but it’s safer. And bringing in the mail soon after it’s delivered is also safer. Leaving mail out overnight is the very worst. We’ve heard numerous accounts of people trolling down streets in the dark looking in every mail box. There was a post on Maple Leaf Life about a nighttime incident just this week.

Have happy and safe holidays.

Rezone at Northgate Way and 1st Ave NE

In what I consider to be great news for the neighborhood, the City is moving ahead with a rezone of the area north of Northgate Way along 1st Ave NE. The rezone would allow for higher buildings (up to 85 ft) and non-residential uses, i.e. businesses. I know the density issue is contentious, but this specific area is ripe for dense development.

KOMO’s North Seattle blog has more details.

Northgate Light Rail Community Design Study Open House, 12/8

The City’s Department of Planning and Development is holding a public meeting to present options for future development and street improvements around the Northgate Light Rail station.

The meeting is on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m., at the Aljoya Senior Apartments at Thornton Place, 450 NE 100th Street. Off-street parking available at Group Health (south of 100th St.)

Information about the proposals are available at this DPD web page.

This a great opportunity to impress upon our city leaders the need to fund and implement more of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plans, such as a pedestrian/bicycle bridge over I-5 at 103rd St, connecting the station to the community college and the neighborhood west of I-5. The Cascade Bicycle Club has a good blog post about this.

Winter 2012 NE Parks and Rec Brochure

The Winter 2012 brochure is available for the NE Parks and Rec. It’s quite large since it includes all the community centers in the area so I had trouble linking to it from the site directly. But it’ available on the Seattle Parks Website.

You can also browse courses register online here:

You can get more details (location, hours, link to the brochure again) on the individual websites for each community Center:

As well as info on the pool pages:

The new sidewalk on NE 115th St is finished! SDOT will be returning soon to plant the two street trees in the planting strip. Since a picture is worth a 1000 words, I refer you to this photograph gallery.
