Early morning shooting

According to the police blotter, police responded to a 911 call of shots fired.

On November 26th, at approximately 1:36 am, 911 callers reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing people running. According to witnesses, the suspect(s) fired from a Volkswagen Passat or similar type vehicle in the 12000 Block of Pinehurst Way NE. North Precinct officers responded and located two of the people seen running. They were interviewed by officers, but it was undetermined if they were the intended targets of the shots fired. Officers searched for the suspect vehicle, but it was not located. It does not appear that any victims were struck, nor was there any property damage located. Officers did recover a shell casing in the 11700 Block of Pinehurst.

Does anyone have more information about what happened?

Crime Report

Here is a crime report from our SPD Crime Prevention Coordinator, Terrie Johnston:

Residential Burglaries are occurring with more frequency in the Lincoln Sector of the North Precinct (Pinehurst; Lake City Way; Maple Leaf; View Ridge; Wedgwood; Ravenna/Bryant, et al)  The precinct commanders are aware, and are staffing accordingly.  Our Burglary Theft detectives are proactively working leads, and are also out in the field.  Please take a moment to review some basic burglary prevention measures:

Most of the burglaries are occurring during daytime hours (from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m.).  If you are home, and someone knocks on your door, please answer the door, don’t open it.  There is a difference.  Since many criminals are looking for houses w/no one home, it is important to let them know someone is there!

If you have a home office, or a room with big screen TVs and computers that can be seen from the street, close the curtains/blinds in those areas when you are gone.  Electronics, jewelry, and small portable items are popular.

Lock up your ladders; or store them in a garage.     Use motion-sensitive lighting when appropriate.

Can first responders find your address?  Seconds matter when you’ve called 9-1-1, so help us out.

We still like front porch lights on from dusk until dawn.    Use the locks and latches you have, even if you are only going to be gone for a little while.

Please report anything suspicious to 911.  Most burglars are apprehended by a watchful neighbor (your best alarm) who called 9-1-1 with good descriptions.

Remember 911 is not just for emergencies anymore.  See something, say something!

Remember to keep your Block Watches active and I can assist you with this.  If you want a free home security survey, contact me (206-684-7711 or Terrie.Johnston@seattle.gov )

Lake City Fire Station Homeless Shelter Update

The City has signed an agreement with Seattle Union Gospel Mission to run an emergency winter homeless shelter in the old Lake City Fire Station 39. It will be open November 24 through April 1.

In the past year the City sought input from local businesses and residents, though there was no consensus on having such a shelter in the neighborhood.  That said, it will undeniably provide much-needed shelter this winter, and the neighborhood should benefit from it being run by an experienced organization.

See more details in the announcement here.

Low-cost Home Energy Audits Available

Neighbors can join to save energy, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint
North Seattle residents have the opportunity to participate in SustainableWorks, a Puget Sound based non-profit, that is offering reduced costs energy audits and retrofits. SustainableWorks is partnering with Seattle City Light, WSU Energy Management, and Puget Sound Energy to bring this energy saving opportunity to the community. The purpose of this program is to help homeowners and renters (with landlord approval) make home improvements that reduce their energy use and energy bills. Participants can save on items like furnaces, air sealing, insulation, and hot water heaters, and reduce their energy costs by 20-40%. To learn more about the program, or to sign-up, please visit www.sustainableworks.com, or call the SustainableWorks office at 206-575-2252.
The process begins with a pre-audit to determine eligibility followed by a professional energy audit. Worth approximately $600, the cost of the audit to the homeowner is $95. An energy consultant then explains to the homeowner where they are losing energy and suggests the most cost effective energy saving improvements. Contractors managed by SustainableWorks then complete the energy saving measures chosen by the homeowner. SustainableWorks bundles projects within neighbors to maximize efficiency and reduce the project cost. SustainableWorks also has a loan program with Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union that can help homeowners finance improvements at low to zero percent interest rates.
About SustainableWorks
SustainableWorks is a non-profit focused on creating quality jobs and improving the environment with residential and small commercial energy retrofit projects facilitated through community engagement and participation. SustainableWorks has utilized a $4 million Community Energy Efficiency Program Grant to retrofit close to 400 homes in moderate-income neighborhoods in Spokane, Pierce, King, and Snohomish counties over the last 2 years.

Elliott Bay Brewery Interview

Lake City Live has another interview up and they recently got shown around Elliott Bay Brewery’s Lake City brew pub. You should go check out the whole thing because it’s not that long but I wanted to share a few of my favorite details.

First, they’re behind schedule due to permitting and necessary seismic retrofitting but their new plan has them opening in January. Originally, they had been shooting for late fall but they were clear at the time that it was also a moving target. From a local history standpoint it was  interesting to hear that they found oak floors under the existing flooring which they’re going to refinish. Anybody know what was there before the game and hobby shop?

Also, it’s always nice to see a commitment to the local neighborhoods:

We’re hoping that our commitment to community will also have an impact on Lake City. We’re branding this as a Lake City brew pub, not just as another Seattle brewery. We truly believe in Lake City and think that as the only brew pub in Lake City, the community will respond well to this addition to the neighborhood.

We hope that locals will see Elliott Bay Lake City as the place to go after work, for Sunday brunch, to get online and do their homework, or after soccer with the kids (because we will be a family friendly pub). We’re hoping we can be not just good neighbors but also a catalyst for more cool development in Lake City.
