Here’s a photo of my rescue dog, Charlie, after I taught him how to read in a class called “SmartyDog” offered by Great Dog Daycare (http://gogreatdog.com/).
I’m a librarian, so I think reading is very important. Of course, it turns out that his FAVORITE book is about kittens!!!
Charlie is a smartydog, but I’m not a very motivated trainer, so we mostly cuddle on the couch and go for walks in the neighborhood.

If you would like to see your pet featured in the Pinehurst Pet of the Week column, please send a photo and a story about your pet to nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.
Pinehurstfest wouldn’t happen without all the wonderful volunteers (more about helping out here) but it also doesn’t happen without at least a bit of money.
There are two options for helping out this year, mostly because I personally can never find my checkbook and do everything online. It got my wondering if other people were having that problem and wanted more options.
- You can mail a check which is 100% tax deductible through our co-sponsor:
Make check payable to:City of Seattle
Mail it to:
Meadowbrook Advisory Council
10517 35th Avenue NE
Seattle, WA 98125
(Note: “Pinehurstfest 2011” in the memo field)
- You can donate online. This isn’t through our co-sponsor and we’re not officially a non-profit so this one wouldn’t be tax deductible. The form could use some polish (I just set it up) but if you like the online option this might be easier for you. https://thriva.activenetwork.com/Reg4/Form.aspx?IDTD=6107581&RF=6609125
And as always, be sure to let me know if you have any questions or concerns: phillip@pinehurstseattle.org
“This is our Girl Kitty (the tabby), and Boy Kitty (the black kitty). We’re a house of friends and we couldn’t really find names for them that everyone thought fit the animals well. Our friends thought that was undignified, so we invited all of our friends over for a debutante coming out party for the kitties. Prior to this we had set up a website for our friends and family to submit and vote on names for the kitties and their names were announced at the party. Officially the cats are Lady Naomi Dongle and Sir Gene Widget.
Boy Kitty is food adventurous and always talks to you when you’re behind the stove cooking. He’s a total sweetheart and can be observed charming people as they enter Pinehurst Park from 12th Ave NE. Girl Kitty is really clever and is real good at training humans. She is an ace at letting us know she wants outside; we’ve hung jingle bells from our doorknobs. She’ll jingle them to get out when there isn’t even anyone in the room. Though she’s turned that attention grabber around and sometimes just jingles them when she wants to play. “

Let’s restart the popular Pinehurst Pets series. We all love our pets, so let’s show them off.
Email a photo and info or a funny story about your pet to nancy@pinehurstseattle.org and we’ll post them here.
Dogs, cats, gerbils, potbellied pigs, bring them on!
We’ve added a new link on our blog – to the Maple Leaf Life blog. Our neighbors to the south often report on places and events we may be interested in. The link is on the Pinehurst blog main page, in the column on the right-hand side, under the heading “Blogroll” (you may have to scroll down). While you’re at it, click on some of our other Blogroll links, such as Cliff Mass’s weather blog.
There are a lot of small things people can do to help make Pinehurstfest a success this year.
- Attend!
- Tell your friends!
- Distribute fliers to local businesses or telephone poles around the neighborhood
- Pass out fliers to your neighbors (even just a few blocks)
- Help setup in the morning on July 16th
- Help tear down and clean up afterwards
- Run the cake walk or other games
- Hand out coffee, drinks, and ice cream
- Take pictures for us to share
If you’re interested in helping in any way, let me know. You can email me at phillip@pinehurstseattle.org which is always the easiest. But you can also call my cell at 206-973-7237 if you’ve got any questions.
Here are the full page fliers (updated to include the North Helpline) which you can print out for distributing to local businesses or around the neighborhood.

This looks to be pretty minor but we don’t get a lot of notices in our neighborhood so I figured it was worth passing along…

Calling all folks with yards certified as wildlife habitats. Hillary Burgess is a graduate student in urban ecology and environmental horticulture at UW. She’s looking for volunteers to collect data on pollinator presence in their certified habitats this summer. The protocol will be very straightforward, not greatly time consuming, and would involve making regular timed observations of bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinating fauna. Identification skills are not necessary, only an interest in observing pollinating fauna in your yard and a willingness to let her visit your certified habitat to record information about the plant species present. If this sounds interesting to you, please contact Hillary Burgess directly at hkb10@uw.edu. She’s hoping to meet with potential volunteers in the next few weeks.
