15th Avenue Bridge Closure to Begin Monday, May 17 2010

We covered the bridge rehabilitation project, the metro service changes, and the changes in the schedule already and here’s the latest update. Basically, construction is now going forward!

Starting on Monday, May 17th, SDOT will close the 15th Avenue NE Bridge to all traffic, including vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians for the start of construction. The bridge, located on 15th Avenue NE at NE 105th Street, across Thornton Creek, will remain closed throughout the 11-month construction period.

SDOT is undertaking this project to make necessary structural repairs and correct erosion problems along the slope of the ravine under the bridge.

Getting Around During Construction:

  • Traffic will be diverted to Roosevelt Way NE, Lake City Way NE/SR 522, and Northgate Way during construction. Signs announcing the closure and detour routes will be posted throughout the area.
  • Local access on 15th Avenue NE north of the work area (between NE 106th and Northgate Way) will be maintained. Drivers must access this area from Northgate Way.
  • Local access on 15th Avenue south of the work area (to NE 104th Street) will be maintained. Drivers must access this area from Lake City Way.
  • Closure signs and information flyers will be posted at each end of the bridge to help pedestrians and bicyclists identify alternate routes.

Questions? Concerns?
SDOT is committed to working with the community to address community concerns about construction activities and detour routes. Please contact Maribel Cruz, SDOT Project Communications at (206) 684-7963/maribel.cruz@seattle.gov or Kit Loo, Project Manager at (206)684-3669/kit.loo@seattle.gov if you have questions.

From Amy Besunder, Executive Director, North Helpline:

North Helpline is thrilled to announce two upcoming events.

Seattle Musical Theatre – 110 in the Shade

We might not have a theater IN Pinehurst but there are many spread out around us.  And many Pinehurst residents are involved in Seattle Musical Theatre and they’re offering a special offer to blog readers I wanted to pass along.

Seattle Musical Theatre at Magnuson Park is proud to present the Northwest premiere of 110 in the Shade, May 7 through 23.

This gem of a musical, based on the 1954 play The Rainmaker (and later the 1956 film that starred Katherine Hepburn and Burt Lancaster) is considered by many to be the finest work of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, who wrote The Fantasticks.

The scene is July, 1936 in the drought-ridden community of Three Point, Texas. Languishing in the unrelenting heat, Lizzie Curry – too smart and too witty for her own good – ponders her future as an old maid. Her farther and brothers have tried to scare up some husband material, but the only likely prospect isn’t cooperating. Enter handsome Bill Starbuck, a charming con man who claims he can bring much needed relief – rain – within 24 hours. His arrival sets off a series of sizzling events.

Loaded with haunting music and lively dancing, 110 in the Shade delivers a great evening of musical theatre. Tickets are $25 – $35.
SPECIAL FOR PINEHURST BLOG READERS: Call the box office at 206-363-2809 and mention the code BLOG to receive $10 off ANY performance. Please limit 4 tickets at this price.

Land Use Decision Announced

I wrote about this land use application when it was first submitted and a decision has now been reached.   Weee, fun stuff…

Original Post: www.pinehurstseattle.org/2010/03/08/new-land-use-application-submitted/
Notice of Decision: web1.seattle.gov/dpd/luib/Notice.aspx?BID=514&NID=10882

I’m not going to go into a lot of the details because there isn’t very much here.  It’s conditionally granted assuming they post some easements and add some legal descriptions to the parcel.  Both of which seem pretty easy…

When I first wrote about this we discussed that this seemed like something of a technicality since they were already building the units on the lot.  But if anybody does have any issues with this decision you can appeal.  There is more information on the notice of decision.  Appeals of this decision must be received by the Hearing Examiner no later than 05/10/2010.

Northacres Renovation Design Meeting, 4/29

Seattle Parks and Recreation invites the community to the second public meeting for the Northacres Park Play Area and Spray Park project on Thursday, April 29, 2010 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Haller Lake Community Club, 1257 Densmore Ave. N., to discuss the play area renovation and the spray park addition to Northacres Park. The public is encouraged to come learn about the project, to meet the design team, and to provide input on the schematic design and spray park features.

Northacres Park is located at 12718 1st Ave NE and was identified in the Parks and Green Spaces Levy as a location for playground renovation. This project renovates the play area and converts the existing wading pool into a spray park. Key considerations in designing the project are safety, water/energy conservation and selection of spray features and play equipment that the community finds engaging.

Seattle voters passed the Parks and Green Spaces Levy by a 59% vote in November 2008. The $146 million Levy provides acquisition funding for new neighborhood parks and green spaces and development funding for projects such as improved playfields, reservoir lid parks, renovated playgrounds, community gardens, and safety upgrades at city owned cultural facilities

For more information, please contact Kelly Goold, Project Manager 206-684-0586, kelly.goold@seattle.gov or visit http://seattle.gov/parks/projects/northacres/playground_spraypark.htm.

Pinehurst Walking Tour!

Join us for a walking tour of Pinehurst with the Deputy Mayor!

Monday, April 26th from 4:00 – 5:00pm (This Monday!)

Starting downstairs at the Holy Trinity Eritrean Church, across the street from the Safeway site.

We had a really good talk with the Mayor in Lake City and larger district-wide issues like sidewalks were a big part of the discussion.  Now Pinehurst is going to be hosting the Deputy Mayor Darryl Smith for our own walking tour.  It will be a short trip so we hope to fit in as much as we can.  We’ll be starting in the downstairs open space at the Eritrean Church.  Mostly this is because it’s a large indoor space (for the always unknown weather) but it also allows us to discuss the future plans to make it a more usable space for the community.  From here we’ll start walking and we’ll take a look at the Safeway site, the Pinehurst Playfield and Shelter House, and many of the sidewalks throughout Pinehurst.  We’ll be making our way to NE 115th St though we probably won’t make it along the full length.

Pinehurst residents are strongly encouraged to attend, especially anybody who has been involved in the sidewalk projects on NE 115th St and the numerous discussions about sidewalks we’ve had.  I know it’s not the most convenient time of day but this will be a great chance to make our voices heard on many local issues.

Streets for All Seattle

So one of the reasons I was looking for feedback on sidewalks and infrastructure was because of Streets for All Seattle.   Their Facebook group and website just went live today and I’ve included more information from them below.

Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/StreetsForAllSeattle
Website: http://streetsforallseattle.org

We believe that walking, bicycling and transit should be the easiest means of transportation in Seattle. But we face cuts in Metro service hours, and we will not meet our obligation to build out the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plans at current funding levels. Our coalition has identified a number of potential funding sources for walking, biking and transit infrastructure, and we look forward to working with the Seattle City Council, Mayor McGinn and our partners to create dedicated funding mechanisms to generate at least $30 million dollars in annual revenue for multimodal transportation initiatives in Seattle.

We also look forward to engaging the entire city of Seattle in a conversation about how we fund and build the pedestrian, bicycle and transit infrastructure that aligns with our values; this year, and into the future.  We want our city to move people and goods efficiently, to equitably serve people of all ages and abilities, to preserve the jobs of our city construction crews, and to aid those who cannot or choose not to own a vehicle.

Boosting bicycling and walking will not only create better health outcomes for underserved residents, it will provide better access to transit. These clean forms of transportation will also help meet state-mandated vehicle miles traveled and city greenhouse gas reduction goals, help decrease the stormwater runoff that now plagues a fragile Puget Sound, and provide a concrete step toward the Council’s stated goal of carbon neutrality.

Mission:
All around the Country, cities are transforming themselves and building transportation systems that make sense for the future. Aligning their public infrastructure investments with the priorities of their citizens, cities like Salt Lake City, Portland, Denver, Minneapolis and New York are creating thriving communities where people want to live and businesses will choose to locate. For Seattle to work for our future, it’s time to get serious about funding the pedestrian, bicycle and transit infrastructure that our citizens demand. It’s time to invest in our values.
