Future Pinehurst Streetcar?

When Link light rail opens in Northgate in approximately 2020, many changes will be made to existing bus service. Buses that duplicate the route of the light rail will likely be eliminated, merged with other routes, or will become local service only (no downtown service by bus). Routes which may be impacted in some way include routes 41, 71, 72, 73, 74, 76, 77, 79, 304, 303, 316, and 355.

Obviously this is the point of the light rail. It will be faster, cheaper to operate, and able to carry a lot more people. It will also be guaranteed to be there for years to come so we can plan development around it. Zoning increases for Northgate are already being planned (http://www.cityofseattle.net/DPD/Planning/Northgate_Revitalization/NorthgateAreaRezoneProposalEIS/default.asp). But what about the large portions of Pinehurst and Lake City that are miles away from a station? We need to make sure we all have good connections to the future light rail as well as the new development in Northgate.

Transit planners will begin public discussions about revisions to bus service about a year and a half before the Northgate light rail station opens and all of us will have opportunities to comment on changes at that time. For those interested in more significant investments such as the possibility of a streetcar or electric trolley bus, conversations and advocacy that begin today insure a higher possibility of having that investment in place by the time light rail arrives in Northgate.

To that end, a Facebook group has formed to start that discussion. Learn more: http://www.facebook.com/pages/People-for-a-Northgate-to-Lake-City-Streetcar/331398498800

Jackson Park Car Arson

There aren’t too many details  yet but SeattleCrime.com is reporting there was a car fire this morning in Jackson Park at the south end of the golf course near 15th Av Ne and Ne 135th St.  The police were called out around 1am and are reporting that it’s an arson.

SeattleCrime.com also mentioned that the Guardian One helicopter was called to North Seattle soon afterwards.  It was nearby but closer to Lake City this time.

At about 1:30, SPD called out Guardian One and K-9 units to track a Hispanic male in his mid-30s—wearing brown t-shirt, 5’11, brown hair—who was headed southbound at 125 and 26th NE.

Seattle Youth & Families Workshops

Mayor McGinn is holding five Youth & Families Initiative workshops throughout the city to discuss “what we want for our kids and how best to create a healthy, positive and equitable environment for all families in our city.” There is going to be one in our general neighborhood this Monday.

Monday, March 1st
7:00-8:30 PM
Northgate Elementary School
11725 1st Ave NE

There is a invitation / flyer with more information. It’s also available in many languages other than English on their downloads page including Tigrigna, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish to name a few.

From The Website:
The Youth and Families Initiative is a major initiative announced by Mayor Mike McGinn during his inaugural address. The Initiative will help shape the Mayor’s agenda on issues affecting youth and families from a child’s birth to their successful career track. We are committed to eliminating racial disparities in education, child care, children’s health and the criminal justice system. This is not a problem solely within communities of color; it is our problem, and the responsibility for ending this systemic inequity rests with all of us.

The co-chairs of the new Initiative are former Mayor Norm Rice, former deputy mayor Bob Watt and Estela Ortega, Executive Director at El Centro de la Raza.

There is also a form which can be used to submit suggestions directly to the city which is quite cool:

Even More Pinehurst Coverage

Pinehurst continues to get coverage with strange headlines. This time from SeattleCrime.com for “Pepper Spray and Booze.”

On February 14th, police were called to the Pinehurst Safeway on NE 123rd and 15th NE after a shoplifter attempted to pepper spray the store manager.

According to a police report, the store manager told officers he saw a woman putting a slipping a bottle of alcohol into her jacket at about 11:21 p.m.
