Safeway Update

Renee sent out an email which included the proposed timeline for the Safeway construction and I wanted to make sure everybody saw it. Especially since they’ll be closing next week. We’re almost there and we’ll have a brand new store very soon. Well, very soon as far as construction projects go…

Store closure – February 27
Pharmacy opens in trailer – March 1
Demolition – complete by mid-May
Site work/building construction – complete early to mid October
Soft opening – early November
Grand opening – early December

They’re opening up the temporary pharmacy in the parking lot as soon as the store closes. And in somewhat more recent news, the store will be LEED Certified instead of just LEED Certifiable.

Crime Prevention Tips from the North Precinct

Diane Horswill, Crime Prevention Coordinator for the North Precinct, and I talked about the puzzling, possibly suspicious door-to-door activity that took place on Friday. Ms. Horswill shared some crime prevention tips:

* don’t open the door without having a peek first at who’s on the other side.

* you can, behind your bolted or locked door, ask “Yes?” and give the person at the door an opportunity to state her or his purpose: e.g., UPS or FedEx delivery, political action committee canvasser, Fun Run participant seeking pledges. If they start with “Can I interest you in…” and they’re clearly not interesting you, you can state so and bid them adieu without the awkwardness of face-to-face encounter, spiel, and rejection cycle.

* post a “No Solicitors” sign by the door.

* ask to see the city-issued door-to-door solicitor’s permit. If they can’t produce one, it’s fair to ask them if they know it’s illegal to solicit at people’s doors without a permit, if they know they are breaking the law?

* legitimate canvassers usually have literature to leave behind should you request it. The mail and White Pages phone number listings bring ample charity solicitations as is.

* not necessarily paranoia, but burglars do knock first to see if someone is home. You can acknowledge whoever’s at the door with a wave from a window or by “Yes?” behind the door so as not to encourage illegal entry and theft.

quirky door to door solicitor

At 3:10 pm today. Friday, February 11, a young man knocked on my door. He said good day and said he was giving a six-question survey to neighbors.

He didn’t introduce himself or the organization on whose behalf he was offering the six question survey, and didn’t say what the survey questions were about.

He probably would have told me if I’d asked, but the fact that he referenced a name I was supposed to but didn’t recognize as a neighbor left me not at all in the mood to answer questions.

Public Input on Police Chief Search – Questions for Us

Meetings and launch of website set up for public input.

The public is invited to offer feedback and help draft assessment criteria for Seattle’s next Police Chief during several upcoming public forums and through a new website and telephone line.

Here are the questions Mayor Mike McGinn’s Police Chief Search Committee is asking of interested citizens:

• What qualities are you looking for in a new Police Chief?
• What is the most important public safety issue in Seattle?
• What does the Seattle Police Department do well?
• What changes would you like to see?

Remaining public hearings are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Franklin High School, 3013 Mount Baker S., Seattle; and 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at New Holly Gathering Center, 7054 32nd Ave. S., Seattle. At the New Holly meeting, language interpreters will be available in Tagalog, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Laotian, Amharic, Oromiffa, Khmer (Cambodian), Somali, and Tigrinya.

In addition to the public meetings, citizens are invited to find background material on the Police Chief search process, including links to online input, at a new website, www.seattle.gov/mayor/spdChiefSearch.  To provide input, go directly to http://www.ideasforseattle.org/forums/40210-police-chief-search/.

Citizens also may call 206-684-CITY (206-684-2489) to offer answers to the Seattle Police Chief Search Committee’s four questions for the public, listed above.

For those who are interested, the Seattle Times covered the search process in an article on February 10th, 2010, http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2011027775_policechief10m.html

Pellet Gun Incident near 125th

Yesterday (2/8/2010) one of the Audubon members who studies Merlins in our neighborhood encountered a man near 125th holding a crow.  The man said it had just fallen out of the sky with an injured wing.  She took the crow to a wildlife rehabilitation center where it was discovered the crow had been shot by a pellet gun.  If you see someone using a pellet gun improperly please call 911.  We don’t want wildlife, pets or people injured in our neighborhood!

More Arson Updates

There have been a lot of updates on this recently but I mainly wanted to let people know that the Seattle Police Department has confirmed that they have a suspect in custody now. I’m still not sure if this is the only suspect but it’s certainly a very positive sign.

Also, they have confirmed that this was not a random occurrence. There are links to the specific house on 125th (it was targeted multiple times) and possibly organizations that operate there. It is used as a residence, a church, and a drug and alcohol treatment center. To me, this seems to mean there is little worry about other random buildings being targeted. Ken Turner from SPD will be following up and I’ll try to update this post as I hear more.

[EDIT:] Apparently the arrest was for another charge but they are a possible suspect. And the investigation continues…

[EDIT:] Seattle Crime has a lot more details on the person in custody.
