Hello Partners:

I learned tonight that TC3 has had an outbreak of Norwalk type virus. It hit the campers pretty hard and some had to go to the hospital. Please hold them in your prayers for a full recovery and that the outbreak will be contained and over quickly.

You can help them by providing bottles of bleach and cloths to use to keep their kitchen and kitchen supplies sanitized. Another great help is Clorox wipes that come in dispensers. Also bottles of hand sanitizers will be a great help, along with vitamins and cans of soup.

Blessings and thanks for all you do,
Mary

Representative needed for Thornton Creek Watershed Oversight Council

Pinehurst doesn’t currently have a representative on the Thorton Creek Watershed Oversight Council.

From Cheryl Klinker, Chair of Thornton Creek Watershed Oversight Council:

I chair the Thornton Creek Watershed Oversight Council which is an organization originally formed to provide oversight for the five year action agenda from the Thornton Creek Watershed Plan. Most of the action items have been completed and we are now working on ongoing oversight and updates to the action plan. Thornton Creek is an important resource that provides drainage and habitat areas for several neighborhoods within the watershed, including Pinehurst. This is why we feel it is critical to have representation from each of these neighborhoods. The Council also includes representatives from departments and agencies who have the expertise to address concerns related to Thornton Creek and its many tributaries. It brings together the expertise and direct experience that can provide a variety of perspectives and thus often better solutions.

Please let me know if you’re interested in representing Pinehurst to the Thornton Creek Watershed Oversight Council —
send me a message at eric@pinehurstseattle.org.

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year to you all ! I thought that you might have interest in some of these musical news items. For more details, or to view my performance and workshop/class schedule, visit www.ericmadis.com and go to the Schedule page.

1. I recently released a new CD (my fifth) on Luna Records entitled The Dues Will Never Be Paid in Full. The title is not meant to be taken too seriously……hence the cover photograph. This is the first record to emphasize my electric, ensemble-based blues in years, and it is the first in which I really paid attention to my vocals. The recording also features Blue Madness (Brad Stoll, Martin Rush, myself) and others, and has two acoustic performances for variety. To check the CD out, go to www.ericmadis.com and then click on “Records”, where there is information and a link to CDBaby. Or you can go directly to CD Baby and listen to 2-minute samples or purchase it at www.cdbaby.com/cd/ericmadis4

2. JamPlay.com has finished posting the electric blues guitar lessons that I recorded with them last year. It has been a great experience for me to get emails from new friends all over the world who have taken the lessons. This is a really useful and inexpensive way to study guitar online with great teachers, including my friends Hawkeye Herman, Orville Johnson and Mary Flower. I am going back to Colorado this year to record more lessons, and am open to suggestions regarding what to cover (bottleneck slide, fingerpicking acoustic, more electric blues, swing?). Go to jamplay.com to check it out, and try out a free lesson.

3. Sweet Blues Northwest has posted some of my solo acoustic performances online from a show that I did for the Washington Blues Society in June, 2009. To see them, go to www.sweetbluesnw.com/eric-madis.htm

4. Tuesday evening guitar classes at Dusty Strings. Starting on January 5, I will be teaching six 3-week guitar classes at Dusty Strings on Tuesdays 7:45-8:45 PM. The first series is Swing Jazz, which will involve three separate 3-week classes at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. The second series is Fingerstyle Blues, which will also involve three separate 3-week classes at progressing levels. There is a two-week break between each of the class levels, and you may sign up for as few or as many classes as you would like. For information, visit: www.dustystrings.com/workshopsandevents/musicschool/classes/guitar/tabid/605/Default.aspx

5. Next show: Vino Bella (99 Front St, Issaquah, 425-391-1424) on Saturday January 9, 7:30-11:30 PM
Vino Bella is a very fine wine and espresso bar in downtown Issaquah. I will be playing with Ron Weinstein (Hammond B-3 organ) and Don Berman (drums), doing a classic funky, bluesy-jazz organ trio. As always, there is no cover charge out at Vino Bella. Come out and make a request! www.vinobella.com

A message from St. George Episcopal Church:

The response of the folks from Pinehurst Neighborhood in helping us care for the people of Tent City 3 was great! Your combined and individual efforts helped us in our outreach to these folks.
Just another example of what a community can do, when we all pull together. Peace and Joy in the New Year, and our prayers of gratitude for each of you. Come and worship with us on Sunday mornings, at 10:00 a.m. Br. John Ryan, O.C.P. Pastoral Associate

Tent City 3 is now moving to Haller Lake United Methodist Church at NE 130th St and 1st Ave NE.

Tim Burgess on Public Safety

City Councilman Tim Burgess has posted a 2009 year end review.  The section on public safety reads, in part:

“In the past few weeks, the Council unanimously passed two important public safety measures. The Chronic Nuisance Property law provides the city with another tool to use against property owners who knowingly allow criminal activity to continue. A separate measure allows homeowners to tear down abandoned single-family residences faster than previously allowed. These derelict houses often become magnets for crime and other undesirable activity. “
