Update on the Merlin falcons in Our Neighborhood

Fledglings Hang Out Together 10 Days After Leaving the Nest

Copyrighted photo courtesy of Barb Deihl – two of the babies 10 days after they fledged.

On June 20 our Pinehurst Pet was a wild Merlin falcon, Spike.  At that time she and her partner Thor were thought to be nesting in our neighborhood for the second year in a row.  Well, news flash!  They WERE nesting, and they had 5 babies!  All summer neighbors and visiting birders had thrills and chills watching the babies start to pop their white heads above the huge nest, start to move around, turn darker, start to REALLY move around and jostle each other precariously near the edge of the nest, and finally start to perch outside the nest and then fly, all under the watchful eyes of their parents.  It was also exciting watching the parents make mid-air prey transfers prior to feeding the babies.  And there were very dramatic moments when the small parents bravely chased away the occasional larger eagle, great blue heron and crow – many crows, actually.

For me, even more rewarding than the considerable joy of watching a little bit of amazing wildlife in our urban setting, was the opportunity it brought for meeting and socializing with neighbors and visiting birders.  Almost every evening there was a small – or large – crowd attracted to the scopes and binocular-strung watchers.  It was so much fun when a neighbor stopped to ask what was going on and was invited to take a peek through a powerful scope.  Those little Merlins made the neighborhood a friendlier place.  And with people out and about all the time, it was a safer place, too.

The babies have flown off now, and we’re seeing a lot less of the parents.  But hope is high that Spike and Thor will return this spring, find a suitable abandoned crow’s nest in the ‘hood, and treat us to another wonderful season of friendship, neighborhood cohesion, and the warm reminder that wildlife CAN coexist with us in the big city.  An important feature of our neighborhood that enables the Merlins to thrive is the existence of our beautiful tall fir trees.  We’re very lucky to have these trees and we should do all we can to keep them.   There is new information about the Merlins in the Pinehurst Pocket Park kiosk, which includes contact information if you have questions about them or tree conservation.  Or contact Audubon volunteer Barbara Deihl at barbdeihl@comcast.net.

Crime & Public Safety at Maple Leaf General Meeting

From the Maple Leaf Community Council:

Dear Neighbor:

This month’s Maple Leaf Community Council General Meeting is approaching fast. We’ve put together a great program we believe will be of significant interest to Maple Leaf residents and businesses.

What: Maple Leaf Community Council General Meeting
Date: Wednesday, January 27
Time: 7-9 pm
Place: Olympic View Elementary, 5th NE and NE 95th
** Free, Licensed Childcare Available On Site **

Many Maple Leaf residents believe property and other crimes in our area have significantly increased. Two armed robbies in our business district in the past few weeks contribute to this sense of unease. To address this issue and take questions from our neighbors, we’ve assembled a fantastic panel of City officials.

City Attorney Peter Holmes
Councilmember Tim Burgess, Chair of the Public Safety Committee
Councilmember Sally Bagshaw
Seattle Police North Precinct Captain Robin Clark
Seattle Police Community Policing Team Sergeant Dianne Newsome
Seattle Crime Prevention Coordinator Diane Horswill

Also addressed at the meeting will be the answer to the question: EARTHQUAKE! – Where do I go in our area to get help, offer help, or access supplies in case of emergency?

The general meeting format will be (very) short presentations from the invited guests and then we’ll give the meeting over to your questions and concerns. This will be a good time to ask about specific public safety issues in your neighborhood, how to make your house less likely to be burglarized, how best to report incidents, learn what the City is doing to combat the problem, etc.

*PLEASE* pass this e-mail along to your neighbors and encourage them to come to the meeting. Suggest they sign up for our e-mail lists here:

If you have a block watch or other neighbors e-mail list, please post this message to your list.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting on Wednesday, January 27.

Sincerely,

Your Maple Leaf Community Council

Eritrean Church Community Space Project

The Eritrean Orthodox Church is working with the Pinehurst Community Council and the North District Council and they’re looking to remodel their basement to make it into a more useful space for the community.  They currently run a lot of programs from it (including tutoring, community dinners, and health fairs) but there are a lot of improvements that can be made.
They are applying for a small grant to hire a consultant/architect to help run some meetings with the community and create the plans based on the feedback.  There are multiple ways people can get involved:
1. Join the steering committee to help guide the project.
This can be as little or as much work as people want.  Honest.  Everything from helping with outreach to feedback via email/phone.
2. Commit to attending the community meetings.
This is actually very important because not only is this going to be the main form of feedback but it counts as volunteering and we need a certain number of volunteer hours to match the grant.  We are currently planning on two meetings at about two hours each and we’re asking people to commit whatever they feel comfortable with.
It’s also very easy.  All it takes is an email with your Name/Address/Zip/Phone/Email and what level of involvement you want.

Members of the church have previously attended Pinehurst Community Council meetings and they have been the subject of many posts including their community dinners, their public community health fairs, their tutoring programs, and their involvement in the Victory Creek Clean and Green.

Charges Files Against Man Apprehended In Pinehurst

SeattleCrime.com has a story with a very close link to Pinehurst which shows a Police response to calls having a dramatic effect.

Charges Filed In Ballard, Maple Leaf Pharmacy Robberies

Police responded to a call regarding a disturbance at NE 120th Street and 19th Avenue NE and arrested a man they are now charging for multiple armed pharmacy robberies in Seattle.  He has also been booked into jail 28 times since 1998 and has more than a dozen prior convictions.

North District Council & 115th Sidewalk

The North District Council met last night to vote for our three recommendations to pass along to the city for the Bridging the Gap Large Projects Fund.  There were multiple rounds of voting and while Pinehurst’s project started out really strong it unfortunately missed the top three by a tie-breaker vote.

We’ve been asked for only our top three choices but we’ll be sending along all of them just in case something higher up gets disqualified for some reason.  We also feel that our district has a greater need than many and hope that more projects might be considered.

Here’s the final ranking:
1 Meadowbrook 110th (2007-208)
2 Cedar Park 125th (2007-019)
3 Lake City 33rd (2007-015)
4 Pinehurst 115th (2007-065)
5 Olympic Hills 130th (2007-018)
6 Lake City 120th (2007-022)
7 Maple Leaf 8th (2007-436)
8 Jackson Park 135th (2007-516)

All of these projects are important and deserve funding and the North District Council and the Pinehurst Community Council will continue to explore other funding options while also pushing for more funding in general.

Also, I wanted to thank everybody for all their hard work on this already length process.
