Sidewalks (and the need for funding)

This coming Wednesday, December 2nd, North District Council will be hearing sidewalk proposals from neighbors in Cedar Park, Jackson Park, Lake City, Maple Leaf, Meadowbrook, Olympic Hills, Pinehurst and Victory Heights. There are over 20 projects that neighbors have submitted for funding consideration. Each neighborhood has picked their top one to three projects. The council will choose the top three projects in all of North District and of those three, it is likely that one will be funded. The Pinehurst project that will be considered is a sidewalk on NE 115th between 5th Ave NE and 15th Ave NE.

This process is happening throughout Seattle at all of the 13 District Councils. Each council must make recommendations of the top three street improvement projects to be considered by Seattle Department of Transportation to fund under the Bridging the Gap Large Project Fund. Over the 9 years of Bridging the Gap Levy, each District Council will likely be able to have one project funded every three years. So, three projects in total will be funded per District Council.

The passion will likely be high at Wednesday’s meeting. In our area and in many other parts of Seattle, there is a very long list of needed pedestrian projects, especially sidewalks, while funding is almost non-existent. Over the past year and especially over the past six months, a core group of people (including me) have been advocating for increased funding for pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. We hope to increase our advocacy over the next year and to ask Seattle City Council and the mayor’s office to commit to increased funding. Stay tuned for more details and please contact me if you have any questions.

North District Council meets Wednesday, December 2nd from 7 to 9 pm, at the Lake City Library. The meeting is open to everyone and those advocating for the 115th sidewalk could use your support at the meeting if you are able to attend.

More car prowl prevention advice

Jonah at SeattleCrime.com has a post up about the increase in car prowls this time of year and has some good prevention suggestions.

Jonah should know. He lives close to Northgate and was, unfortunately, recently a car prowl victim.

How the City Spends Our Money

City Council Member Tim Burgess sent out a newsletter last week that contains an interesting bar chart showing the city general fund broken down by line item. Look at it here:

http://www.seattle.gov/council/Burgess/news/0911.htm

The biggest chunk by far is for Public Safety: police, fire, law, municipal court!

Tent City3 needs batteries, blankets, and gloves

From Rev. Deacon Mary Gould at St. George Church:

It is wet and cold outside. Tent City3 needs batteries, blankets, and gloves.

In addition they are in need of tents, tent parts, and tent repair supplies. If you have anything tent-like laying around not in use anymore, please consider donating it to Tent City 3.

They are especially in need of tents for community purposes (to sleep new intakes, an office, for a common area to sit or stand out of the rain, etc.). Wall tents and frame tents would be ideal. Camping tents are needed too.

The residents of TC3 are resourceful and could make use of car port tents (portable garages), motor home covers, canopies, event tents, gazebo tents, garden tents, party tents, etc. Anything tent-like.

Parts or incomplete tents are also needed and welcome. Like tents without poles, poles without tents, frame joints, tarps, lumber (pallets and plywood for floors, and 1x2s, 1x3s, 1x4s, etc., 2x2s, 2x3s, and 2x4s for A-frames, fixing pallets, etc.), duct tape, twine, rope, etc. Oh yes, and tarps.

Tent City 3 is currently located in the parking lot of St. George’s Episcopal Church, at 2212 NE 125th Street, Seattle. Our office is open 24-hours per day. 206-399-0412.

Please respond as you are able. Times are hard for many people in today’s economy and that is also true for our homeless brothers and sisters.

From Seattle Public Utilities: No Garbage, Food and Yard Waste or Recycling Collections for Thanksgiving Day

No garbage, food and yard waste or recycling collections are scheduled in Seattle on Thursday, November 26, 2009. Collections scheduled for Thursday will occur on Friday, and Friday collections will occur on Saturday due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Please be sure to have your containers out by 7 a.m. to ensure collection.

Closures: The City of Seattle’s North Recycling and Disposal Station in the Fremont/Wallingford area and the South Recycling and Disposal Station in the South Park area will be closed on Thanksgiving. Both of the Seattle’s recycling and disposal stations will be open for normal operations the day after Thanksgiving.

Put that carcass in the cart! 30 percent of Seattle’s landfilled garbage is made up of food waste. Seattle food and yard waste customers can place all of their Thanksgiving leftovers, such as turkey bones, celery, yams, potatoes, pumpkin pie, fruitcake and napkins, in their food and yard waste carts. The food scraps will be made into compost for local gardens and parks. Learn more at www.seattle.gov/util/services/yard.

Don’t be a turkey! Keep sewers fat-free! Property owners are responsible for their side sewer connections to the city’s sewer system. Sewer clogs often happen during the holiday season when holiday fare is prepared for friends and family. You can prevent this by pouring used dairy products, fats, oil, grease or greasy foods into a lidded container and placing it in the trash – NOT down the sink drain.

Give the gift of emergency preparedness. The holiday season comes at a time where we have some of our most extreme weather. Give a gift that you know will be useful and may make a difference. Assemble an emergency kit for a loved one. The kit can include a battery-powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher, bottled water and three days of non-perishable food and drinking water. Kits can be stored at home, work and in the car. Learn more tips at www.takewinterbystorm.org.

Customers can report a missed garbage, yard waste or recycling collection after 6 p.m. on the day it was missed by calling (206) 684-3000 or by visiting the Online Missed Collection form on Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) Web site at www.seattle.gov/util.

Use caution to prevent car prowls this Friday in Northgate

Casey MacNerthney at SeattlePI.com has an article with statistics about car prowls at Northgate, especially on the Friday after Thanksgiving. They were pretty surprising to me. Use caution this week and prevent becoming a victim.
