Hello!

What better thing to think about on such an icy cold day than the Maple Leaf Reservoir Park? Here is a quick review and a meeting notice.

QUICK REVIEW:
As you have probably seen Seattle Public Utilities is busy with the burial of our reservoir. Construction began a couple months ago and the plan is for the reservoir to be completed sometime in 2012 (after the reseroivr is completely done, the park development work can begin). They are presently removing the old reservoir before they begin building the cells for the new reservoir.

Seattle Parks Department has named a Project Manager (Kellee Jones) and has also chosen — from a large field of candidates — a landscape architect to help plan our park. You may have recently heard in the news about Cal Anderson Park being named by Forbes as one of the nation’s top ten parks — well, the landscape architect firm that designed Cal Anderson is the group that was chosen for OUR reservoir park project, The Berger Partnership. They are also the landscape architects working on the Beacon Hill reservoir up at Jefferson Park. So we are lucky to be working with an experienced group of people who have worked in the past on other reservoir parks and neighborhood groups.

MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Parks Department is holding a Meet-n-Greet, Question-n-Answer meeting on Tuesday, December 15th, from 6:30 to 8pm at Olympic View Elementary. This meeting is an opportunity for people who have any questions about the process of the park design meetings and the scheduling of the park design meetings, not details about the design itself. Parks Department staff and Seattle Utilities staff will be available to answer questions. There will be no official presentation, so you can show up anytime between 6:30 and 8pm and you can stay for as little or as long as you like.

If you are unable to attend this meeting, but you have a question, please send it along to me and I will ask it and send the answer back to you. If you have any concerns or suggestions about the process of the park design meetings — something that you think could be done to make it go better or make the choices easier to understand — this would be a great opportunity to talk about that.

Our actual Park Design Meetings will be starting in January 2010. These meetings will be where we can come forward and talk about what we hope to see in our park and how we hope it will work with our neighborhood. It is very exciting that we will be starting to make some progress on what our park will become. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please send them along.

I look forward to seeing you at this meeting if you will be attending. If I don’t see you before the Park Design Meetings in January, have a great holiday season! have a great day.

Tent City3 Needs

From: mgould
Date: December 5, 2009 10:41:36 AM PST
To: Mary Gould
Subject: Tent City3 Needs

Dear Partners:
It is really, really cold outside especially at night. The residents of TC3 are feeling it even more than we are. Please consider providing them with chemical hand warmers and blankets to help them keep warm.

Comforters, blankets, warm throws, hats, gloves, jackets and sweaters all help to keep the cold at bay.

Chemical hand warmers can be purchased at Costco by the case for a very reasonable price. The residents use these while providing 24 hour security duty and have also learned to tuck them inside pockets while sleeping to help keep warm.

Other good things are canned or packaged soup, coffee, hot chocolate, anything that can be warmed up and keep folks warm from the inside out can help to chase the cold away.

If you, or anyone you know can help with these items this week, please do so.

Stay warm and be well,
Mary

Law Enforcement Explorers Program for Youngsters 14 to 21 Years of Age

Here’s a program that may appeal to some of our neighborhood youth.  Check it out!

The December North Precinct Advisory Council meeting’s guest was Detective Alvin Little, advisor of Seattle’s Police Explorer Program.  He and four young Explorers told us about the program.  The mission of the program is to bridge the gap between youth and police by educating and involving them in police operations, and to interest them in law enforcement, though only about 2% actually go on to police work. The Explorers we talked to were very enthusiastic about the fun, the camaraderie, and the opportunities to do community service work.  I was impressed with their interest in community service.

Explorers apply the training they receive through community service. For example, they volunteer at community events doing security work, directing traffic, fingerprinting small children, and helping with crime prevention programs.

Members also learn firsthand how Police Officers do their jobs. They learn how the Police Department investigates major crimes such as homicides, narcotics violations and gang activity. Explorers also visit units such as K-9 and Harbor Patrol.

For more information, take a look at the Explorer web site at http://www.seattlepoliceexplorers.com/index.php

This brochure explains eligibility and how to become an Explorer: http://www.seattle.gov/police/publications/Brochures/Explorers_Brochure.pdf

Holiday Safety Tips

The Seattle Police Department offers these and more holiday safety tips at:

http://www.seattle.gov/police/prevention/Seasonal/holiday.htm

– If you are traveling, set an automatic timer for your lights and ask a neighbor to check your house and park in the driveway occasionally.

– Many con artists take advantage of holiday generosity by going door-to-door. Ask for identification and get specifics to how and where the donations will be spent/used.

– If you are shopping, carry your purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket.

– After the holidays, break down boxes and put them in your recycle bin so passersby don’t see what nice new things you have in your home by what’s in your garbage.

Have a fun and safe holiday season!

This weekend’s breakfast special at Treehouse Coffee is a sausage, egg and cheese bake or waffles.
