Safeway’s Proposed Approach to Stormwater Management at the New Pinehurst Safeway

Here is additional information from Safeway regarding the proposed Pinehurst Safeway store redesign:

Our approach to stormwater management at the new Pinehurst Safeway will handle all stormwater from both the parking lot and the roof using sustainable, earth-wise strategies.

For the parking lot, pervious pavement has been used in tandem with the City’s landscape planter design specifications so that all of the stormwater will infiltrate into the soil onsite, recharging the groundwater. For the roof, runoff will be routed through Stormwater Planters (per City specifications) located on the east and south sides of the building, infiltrating entirely onsite and again recharging the groundwater. The stormwater planters act to absorb water runoff and slowly release it into the ground.

It is the goal of this design approach to eliminate the need for a traditional detention vault. With these strategies, the site significantly exceeds the LEED requirements for Stormwater Design points in both Quantity Control (Sustainable Sites Credit 6.1) and Quality Control (Sustainable Sites Credit 6.2).

Pets of Pinehurst #3 Dogs Need to Workout Too!

Even little dogs need to exercise regularly, just like people. This week I’m introducing JC, which stands for Joey Cora, — remember him? Little guy, bulgy eyes, used to play for the Mariners? Lots of ladies thought he was cute, he cried when they lost the AL playoffs …. Awwwww!

JC belongs to Dan Potts, the owner of The Training Center. The gym is located a couple of blocks east of Fred Meyer in the old Cedar Park Elementary School. I’ve been a regular there for a number of years – I love the no-hype atmosphere. One day one of Dan’s kids was working out and he’d brought JC to the gym. I was impressed — he is smart and completely well mannered. And he can pump iron like nobody’s business!

I-5 Pavement Repairs – Coming to us this spring

This February the Washington State Department of Transportation will begin work to repair the worst of the worst pavement on both directions of I-5 between South Seattle and Shoreline and on the I-5 express lanes. Due to the scale of the project they are expecting up to 14 weekends of closures and more than 100 nights of closures lasting into late summer. Each weekend or night closure would affect one direction of the freeway and reduce I-5 down to just one or two through lanes. Ramp closures may also occur, depending on the location. They expect to learn more in the next couple of weeks about how these closures would specifically affect I-5 near the Pinehurst neighborhood.

In addition to traffic delays, they also expect that construction noise and vibration will affect those living and working within 500 feet of the freeway, particularly at night when people are trying to sleep. Although they are taking steps to minimize noise where they can, much of it is unavoidable. They have a noise variance from the city of Seattle for night work and will notify I-5 neighbors about the work by delivering fliers to everyone within 500 feet of the freeway. They are also conducting outreach to neighborhood, governmental and business groups.

A representative from SDOT will be at our Pinehurst community meeting on Monday, January 26th. If you want to learn more about the project in advance of the meeting, visit the project Web site linked below. The Web site will be updated frequently as new information becomes available. It will be the best source for up-to-date information about work locations, times and durations.

Lamb of God Preschool (NE 125th and 27th NE)

Maria asked me to pass this on to folks:

My son Parker goes to Lamb of God pre-school in Lake City and loves it. They have lost a couple of kids from his class and now have room for a few more. He is in the 3-4 class and there is also a pre-K class. Both have a couple of openings.

If you or anyone you know is interested in a few days a week break or learning time for the kids, look into it. It is great for both Parker and I.

Lamb of God Preschool (formerly Our Savior Preschool) has immediate openings in the 3/4s class and in the Pre-K class.

We are located just off of Lake City Way at 125th Street. Our address is 12509 27th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98125.

We are housed in the Lamb of God Lutheran Church. Lamb of God Preschool is a Christian-based preschool providing a nurturing environment which allows your children to grow socially, emotionally and spiritually. We provide many opportunities for your child to work together with other children through play and projects, to listen and follow directions from the teachers and to get used to a daily routine within a school environment. Our curriculum is theme based and age appropriate.

Our program serves children from 2 years to 5 years of age. We currently have IMMEDIATE openings in the following classes:

3/4’s • Should be 3 by August 31, 2008 • Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursday from 9:00am-11:30am • Price: $25 registration fee. $155 per month.

Pre-K • Should be 4 by August 31, 2008 • Classes are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am – 11:30 am • We also have an extended day option “Lunch Bunch” on Mondays and Wednesday until 1:00 pm • Price: $30 registration fee. $190 per month and an additional $75 if interested in Lunch Bunch

Please call the preschool director, Julie Seidel, if you have any questions or would like to set up a tour. The phone number at the preschool is (206) 362-8143 or feel free to contact Julie at her home at (425) 806-8427.

Sunship (another band with roots in Pinehurst)

I am biased on this one because my husband plays in Sunship.

Sunship plays original free jazz compositions. Band members include Stuart Dempster, Brian Heaney, Andrew Luthringer, Michael Monhart and David Revelli. Stuart Dempster taught ethnomusicology at the University of Washington for over three decades and is credited with bringing the didjeridu to the United States.

Christopher DeLaurenti of the Stranger said, “Sunship is one of the few groups that not only plays in a space, but plays with space.”
