Update on Safety Improvement Work in Pinehurst

A few weeks ago, Pinehurst Community Council invited Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to have a table at the upcoming Pinehurstfest so they can share their progress on the safety improvement work with the Pinehurst neighbours.

We just received a reply from SDOT. Brian Dougherty, in charge of Pedestrian and Neighbourhood Projects, regretfully turned down the invitation but provided us with the much needed up-to-date information regarding their safety projects in this area:

On track for delivery this year:

  • Crosswalk beacon at 15th Ave NE and NE 115th St
  • Speed humps on all the non-arterial streets around Hazel-Wolf K-8
  • Curb ramps and crossing improvement at NE 117th St and Roosevelt Way NE

On track to begin construction in 2018:

  • Sidewalk and drainage improvements on 12th between the school and the park  / on 115th between the school and Roosevelt

Brian encourages us to contact him if we have any questions.

Pinehurstfest Music Schedule

Pinehurstfest is fast approaching, and we now have the music schedule! See poster below. We hope to see you! It’s a fun way to meet your neighbors and enjoy our local park.

Still Looking for Volunteers for Pinehurstfest

Thanks to those of you who have volunteered to help at Pinehurstfest! We have more slots to fill. They are just one hour slots, though you can certainly sign up for more than one!

Pinehurstfest is Saturday, July 15th from 2-5 pm.

We’ve got a signup page with different options here:

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050d4ca8a92baa8-pinehurstfest

Beyond what’s listed on the page above we can also use help putting up posters (and removing them afterwards) or going door-to-door to your neighbors to make sure they know about the event. This can be any time from now until the event as your schedule permits though obviously early notice is better for people. We’ve got posters and smaller handouts we can print if you’re interested in helping there. You can email phillip@pinehurstseattle.org

We are also always looking for other activities at the event if you’re interested in organizing anything else. We’ve had a cake walk, raffle, and party/lawn games in the past. But we would need somebody to step up and organize it as we just don’t have the resources this year. But if you’ve got any ideas we’re certainly willing to support you.

Please feel free to share this – we can use all the help we can get!

Road Rules – Merging for Lane Closure

Lane closed ahead. One great big backup, right?

Not necessarily, says the Washington State Department of Transportation, if you know the right way to merge.

Test your move-over know-how below:

You’re traveling on Interstate 5 when you spot an orange “Lane closed ahead” sign. What’s the right thing to do?

  1. Merge left as soon as you can after seeing the sign.
  2. Merge left within 500 feet of the sign.
  3. Wait until the lane you’re in runs out, and then merge left.

See if you agree with traffic experts on the best way to navigate this season’s construction zones:

Believe it or not, it’s 3. Yep, that last-minute move that leaves polite Northwesterners grumbling is actually the right way to merge.

Traffic studies show that congestion drops dramatically when drivers fill both lanes equally when approaching a closure, keeping them moving roughly at the same speed. Then, within a few car lengths of the lane ending, drivers take turns – folding into the remaining lane like teeth in a zipper.

Done properly, say traffic officials, drivers may not even need to tap the brakes.

The zipper merge reduces backups because it uses more of the pavement rather than increasing congestion by creating mini-choke points as drivers randomly move left.

Washington began urging drivers to use the zipper merge in 2014. States including Missouri and Kansas started pushing it this year.

The only catch is, for the zipper merge to work well, everyone needs to do it.

That said, safety always comes first in a construction zone. If you find yourself in a situation where merging earlier seems the safer choice, do it! And, of course, always keep speeds down in construction zones for the safety of highway maintenance crews and fellow drivers.

Kids’ Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

Eight year old Thamila made this sweet piece at last year’s Pinehurstfest.

“You’re a shooting star;

May your wishes come true;

Follow your inner star.”

This inspirational art will be in the park kiosk all July. The pocket park is on the corner of NE 117th & 19th Ave NE.

Come to this year’s Pinehurstfest July 15, 2-5 pm and let your child draw a picture for the pocket park!

World of Tastes in Lake City 2017

World of Tastes in Lake City returns; pick up your passport soon!

This program to support local establishments will run now until September 22, 2017. Passports with enough stamps to qualify for a prize should be returned to the Kaffeeklatsch by close of business on September 22.

Simply make a purchase at any of the participating establishments, present your passport and receive a stamp. Don’t forget to thank the business for taking part.

Passports will be available at the Kaffeeklatsch as well as other of the participating businesses. You can always pick one up at the Lake City Farmers Market, and they will be made available at various public events throughout the program.

Take part in this program to support some of the most treasured Lake City businesses. You can partner with friends, family and neighbors to qualify for the drawing on whatever level is comfortable. It is hoped that this  program helps to  demonstrate our community’s ability to support local small businesses.

Maybe you will find a new favorite spot and have fun visiting the ones you already have come to love. These businesses provide Lake City with its “flavor” and it is up to us as a community to help keep them here.

There are three levels of prizes indicated on the passport so that more people can take part in the fun. Winners will be chosen at random and one winner from each of the three tiers of prizes will be awarded. Winners will be contacted via the contact information on the passport within 30 days of the closing of the program.

The First 20 participants to turn in a passport with 7 or more stamps will automatically receive a $10 Gift Card to the Farmers Market

A big thank you goes out to all the businesses taking part as well as the sponsoring businesses – Two Dog Yoga, Kaffeeklatsch, Manila Manila, Elliott Bay Brewery and the Lake City Farmers Market.
