North Precinct Advisory Council Minutes for June 2016

SPDbadgeThis month the three Seattle City Councilmembers who represent North Precinct districts were the guest speakers. District 4 – Emilio Garza was a last-minutes stand-in for Rob Johnson; District 5 (includes Pinehurst) – Debora Juarez; District 6 – Mike O’Brien. Topics covered were the new precinct building; transportation safety; homelessness. For a writeup of their discussion, and for more news from the North Precinct SPD, see the minutes here.

Emergency Hub Drill for Cascadia Earthquake

EarthquakeDrillThe Lake City Hub at the Fred Meyer parking lot will be activated and open 9-11 am this Saturday, June 11. The drill scenario will be Day 5 of a 9.0 Cascadia earthquake. On Day 5 we will still be on our own out here in North Seattle–as will most other neighborhoods. There will be no power, no water, no sewer, and in all likelihood, any remaining natural gas lines will be shut off. Some folks will be staying in shelters. Water will be in short supply (think about getting a water filter and trekking to the lake), refrigerated food will be spoiled, and sanitation facilities unavailable. Many of Seattle’s bridges, overpasses, and roads will have collapsed. Public health issues will be a priority. It all sounds dreadful. Sadly, frighteningly, it is within the realm of possibility.
Please stop by the Hub on Saturday morning. Be an emerging volunteer and offer your skills. If you are a cyclist, bike over and we’ll send you out to check on specific situations. Or come by and read a script of a local event so Hub volunteers can practice helping you by connecting you with local resources. Ham radio operators also will be honing their communication skills–with other Hubs, and via a sector network, to the Emergency Operations Center.
The Hub is always looking for more volunteers–you don’t need any special skills but simply want to help your neighbors. And we’d love to have more Ham radio operators become involved. Plus we need more Hubs than just the one we have now–NE Seattle is a Hub desert!

Back Yard Barter- at Hunter Tree Farm June 12

byb-logo

Time: June 12, 1pm to 3pm
Location: Hunter Gathering Place
Street: 7744 35th Ave NE

Backyard Barter is a volunteer run organization staffed by a passionate group of ‘makers’ who believe in supporting community, cash free exchange, and sharing the pleasure and craft of DIY food & garden production.

Its focus is on the homemade and the homegrown. This can span a huge range of stuff – here is a partial list of trade items they have seen: fresh eggs, honey, flower, bulbs, seeds, baked goods, handmade soap, edible plants, garden seeds, fruit/vegetables/herbs, kimchi, beer/mead and jams/jellies, homemade yogurt, homemade laundry soap, homemade skin care products, redworms for vermiculture, compost tea, ornamental plants.

The exchange value of any given item is up to each barterer. The process is a simple one, you just ask ‘would you like to trade your (eg jar of blackberry jam) for my (eg loaf of bread)..’ or whatever you are trading. Sometimes people will say ‘no thank you’ but most often the trade works perfectly. Remember, this is a cash-free exchange.

Monthly Barters – They try to hold a minimum of 10 barters/year. Monthly events are scheduled for a 2 hour block, the first 45 minutes are designed for sign-in (your sign-in sheet will have space for item descriptions, but some people find it helpful to prepare labels and/or ingredient lists ahead of time) & set up. Once you have your goods arranged you can check out the other items offered for trade and meet your neighbors. Trading opens at the beginning of the second hour, and it is requested that people wait for the ‘bell’ to start their actual trading.

Location: the vision is to include as many neighborhoods in the city as possible in the bartering network. Events have been held in the NE (Ballard, Crown Hill), North (Greenwood Library, Shoreline, Phinney), Central (Seattle Farm Coop), SODO (Second Use Building Materials), Beacon Hill (Beacon Rocks), and West Seattle (Youngstown Cultural Arts Center) neighborhoods. New neighborhood venue ideas (and partners) are welcome; email them at connect2barter@gmail.com if you have an idea or would like to help facilitate a new location.

Local Classes – 123classes.com

classes

Classesandworkshops.com (also called 123classes.com) is an independent educational program offering fun, affordable noncredit classes in the arts. It currently offers over sixty classes a quarter, in a wide range of subject areas.  Each teacher is independent and designs his or her own classes.

All classes currently meet in Seattle. Some meet in the University of Washington campus; others off campus in the University District; others in Lake City; others in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood.

Current class offerings range from drawing and painting to acting, filmmaking, writing, collage, calligraphy, WordPress, Photoshop, and more.

Though they’re aimed at adults, some classes also work for younger students. If a student is under 18, and is interested in a course, contact them before enrolling to make sure the class is a good match for a younger student’s needs.
