Debora Juarez Met with Idris Mosque

CityCouncil

In response to severe threats posted online earlier in the week, Councilmember Debora Juarez met with Idris Mosque board member Hisham Farajallah Thursday and issued a message in support of Seattle’s Muslim community.

“The Idris Mosque has been an important Northgate institution for over 35 years. Threats and hate speech against upstanding members of our community must be met with stronger demonstrations of solidarity and compassion.

“While it may be difficult for most Seattleites to imagine being targeted simply for exercising their First Amendment right to freedom of religion, this is not the first, second, or even the third time members of this mosque have faced violence. Speaking out against this bigotry and ignorance is everybody’s responsibility.”

King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski joined Councilmember Juarez on a tour of the mosque led by Mr. Farajallah. Over the course of the tour, Mr. Farajallah spoke on the history of the mosque, the broad ethnic and cultural diversity of its membership, and the need to correct many broadly-held misconceptions regarding the Islamic faith.

Seattle Police have increased their patrols of the area in response to the serious threats posted online. Councilmember Juarez will also join the Idris Mosque congregation for iftar on Tuesday, June 28.

Free Summer Meals for Kids

HIPThe Washington State Summer Food Service Program, or Summer Meals, provides free meals and snacks to all children and teens (18 years and younger) during the summer months.

Each summer, one in four kids and teens in Washington, who rely on school breakfast and lunch during the school year, look forward to three months without meal support. Hunger Intervention Program’s Summer Meals for Kids provides freshly made, nutritious lunches from the HIP kitchen at kid-friendly locations around the north Seattle community. HIP partners with other community organizations to offer activities at meal sites to encourage participation all summer long.

Benefits

  • With access to a daily meal, families can stretch their food budgets.

Adopt-A-Street Litter Cleanup Sunday June 19th

.
logo-seattle-adopt-a-street

Pinehurst Community Council participates in the City’s Adopt-A-Street program.  We’ve adopted these streets for occasional litter pickup:

  • Pinehurst Way NE – from Roosevelt Way NE to NE 125th St
  • NE 115th St – from 20th Ave NE to Pinehurst Way NE

Our next work party will be Sunday, June 19th, at 10:00 am.  It takes about two hours, but you aren’t committed to the whole time if that’s too long for you. We have grabbers, bags, brooms and a sharps container.  You bring work gloves. If you are interested in helping, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

We’ll meet at the northeast corner of Pinehurst Way and NE 115th St, rain or shine.

This is a fun event – we work in pairs and have good laughs over some of the stuff we put in our garbage bags. And it’s always nice when a neighbor honks or gives us a thumbs-up for our efforts!

Our commitment is for four cleanup events a year, but volunteering for this event does NOT commit you to future work parties.

If you participate, you’ll sign a volunteer sign-in sheet that gives you insurance coverage during the event.  I’ll go over safety precautions with everyone before we start.

Information about the City’s program is at:

http://www.seattle.gov/util/environmentconservation/getinvolved/adoptastreet/.

If you haven’t contacted Nancy and want to show up on the spur of the moment, that’s fine.

Come on and join the party, meet your neighbors and make a difference!

Let’s Make Pinehurst Streets Safer!

Do you want safe streets in Pinehurst? It is time for us to take action.

The new Hazel Wolf K-8 school, located at NE 117th and Pinehurst Way NE, is scheduled to open this September. Students, faculty members and parents will be walking to the school. Others will be arriving by bus. Or by car.

This makes the adjacent streets, such as NE 117th St, NE 115th and 12th Ave NE, the prime candidate for safety improvements.

The school is building nice sidewalks around its property. On the other hand, Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is getting delayed on the construction of an additional sidewalk that will connect the school to the Pinehurst Playground, about four blocks away. NE 115th and 117th Streets have no sidewalks or curbs.

We are hoping that our new group, Pinehurst Pedestrian Safety, will be able to help make our neighbourhood safer.

The group’s primary goal is to work with the City of Seattle and SDOT to improve the safety of the streets adjacent to the Hazel Wolf school. We are setting up a Google group to facilitate discussions among members. We also plan to mention the group in the upcoming Pinehurst Community Council meeting on June 21.

If you are interested in the details, please leave comments, or better yet, come chat with us at the meeting!

[EDIT: Adding a link to the email list / group. We’ll also do a new post to make sure everybody sees it. https://groups.google.com/d/forum/pinehurstpedsafety]
