North Seattle Baseball – Youth League

North Seattle Baseball passed along an open house for this weekend. Their league has practices and games at the Pinehurst Playfield in the neighborhood.

Spring is on its way, and so is baseball season! Come learn about the north end’s premier youth baseball league, North Seattle Baseball, at our winter Open House, happening this weekend at our North Seattle Batting Cages!

  • Meet NSB board members and coaches;
  • Explore the new-and-improved North Seattle Batting Cages facility;
  • find out what’s in store for NSB’s young ballplayers this spring and register on-site!

This event is open to all – new and returning families – or just those who wish to check out the area’s only indoor batting cage facility!

Date: Saturday, Jan. 31
Time: 10am-2pm
Location: North Seattle Batting Cages (home of NSB) – 8512 20th Avenue Northeast, just off Lake City Way NE [located on the lower level; use street-level stairs located to the left of Two Cranes Aikido]

ORCA LIFT Reduced Fare Starts March 1

busstopKing County Metro and Public Health have teamed up to promote ORCA LIFT, a reduced-fare transit card for low-income adults. Beginning immediately, those who qualify can obtain a special ORCA card to pay a bus fare of $1.50.

To qualify for ORCA LIFT, an adult must have an income below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. For example, a single individual can have a maximum household income of $23,340 to qualify. The reduced-fare transit pass can then be used like a normal ORCA card on any Metro or Kitsap Transit bus, Sound Transit Link light rail, King County Water Taxi or Seattle Streetcar.

Qualified riders can obtain an ORCA LIFT card for free at one of 40 locations across the county.

Free Crime Prevention Presentations

burglarOur SPD North Precinct Crime Prevention Coordinator, Elizabeth Scott (elizabeth.scott@seattle.gov),  is still a good resource, but currently she is booked for evening presentations/meetings through June, so here is another resource if you want to convene a meeting of concerned neighbors about crime and crime prevention.

The Seattle Neighborhood Group offers free presentations on a number of topics, including personal safety, calling 9-1-1, vehicle security, what to do about suspicious activities, and identity theft and fraud. Contact them to make arrangements at info@sngi.org. Here is a flyer:

Street Improvements Coming Soon

LCWimprovementsSome sidewalks are coming around 24th Avenue NE and Lake City Way. And there will soon be more safety features at NE 110th St and Lake City Way for Nathan Hale students crossing the street. More work is planned along the corridor at 14th/15th Avenues NE, 20th NE, NE 125th Street, NE 130th Street, NE 135th Street and NE 145th Street. For more information, see:

North Precinct Advisory Council Minutes for January 2015

This month’s speaker at North Precinct Advisory Council was Josh Hall from Seattle Human Services Department. HSD funds many agencies that provide services to Seattle residents. There are three divisions: Youth and Family Empowerment; Community Support and Assistance; and Aging and Disability Services.

Regarding crime in the North Precinct, Captain Emerick noted that the auto theft task force has had a marked effect. In October-November there was a 45% reduction in car prowls from those months the previous year. In one 21 day period late in 2014 SPD made 27 auto theft arrests. And in the last 30 days there was a 142% reduction in car prowls compared to that period year ago.
