Want to Help Give Away Money?

CleanScapes Neighborhood Waste Reduction Reward!

We’ve talked about how Pinehurst was one of the neighborhoods awarded $50,000 recently for reducing how much waste we produce. And we reached out for suggestions on how to spend that money and talked about it at one of the recent meetings.

Now we’re looking for a volunteer to help select the winning project. Each of the neighborhoods will be sending representatives to the selection committee. They will be meeting 2-3 times over the next month or two to narrow down the proposals and select the winning project(s). Please let me know (phillip@pinehurstseattle.org) if you’re interested in representing Pinehurst.

Seriously, awarding grants can be a lot of fun which is why we wanted to open this up to the larger community. You get to give away somebody else’s money! It’s also often a lot of work but this should be a much smaller time commitment since the award is relatively small and I don’t think there were a crazy number of applicants. There isn’t a formal application process for the volunteer so I will generally selecting the first applicant who is from our community and who appears committed. Thanks!

North Precinct Advisory Council Minutes for May 2014

Seattle_Police_BadgeAt the May NPAC meeting, the Captain reviewed the results of the survey he asked us to make of our neighbors’ public safety concerns and fears.

The top five most mentioned fears are:

  • Dark Streets
  • Lack of police presence; long response time; release of repeat offenders
  • Noise from bars, parties
  • Personal safety
  • Transients

The top five most mentioned crimes are:

  • Residential burglaries
  • Car prowls
  • Drug use
  • Graffiti
  • Traffic violations/pedestrian safety/speeding

The Captain is initiating a project to directly address these concerns. NPAC members will work with SPD to identify and prioritize specific problems in the neighborhoods. Then SPD will focus on the problem, and get other city services involved, if needed. For instance, if there is a transient problem at a park, SPD will do a 1-2 week focus on that park to handle illegal activity, and call in social services to help the transients. Or if a dark street is identified as a concern, SPD will help the neighborhood ask the city for a street light.

The project is divided into four issues of concern and one North Precinct lieutenant will be assigned to each issue. One NPAC member will be paired with the lieutenant, and together that pair will work with the rest of the council neighborhood representatives to choose the target problems. The four issues are:

  • Traffic/pedestrian safety
  • Street lighting
  • Human services
  • Drugs and anti-crime

For more information from the May meeting, read the minutes here.

Lake City Farmers Market Starts June 12

One more month until Lake City Farmers Market opens! It’s important to shop there because sales have been declining, and if they don’t improve this year, the market could be moved to another neighborhood.

Pinehurst School Traffic Safety Meetings!

There has been a lot of talk about the new school being constructed on the site of the current Pinehurst school. People have had a lot of ideas for improvements that need to be made in the area and this is a good opportunity to share you ideas on how to make our neighborhood a safer place. The two meetings should be identical. There are two of them at different times to give more people a chance to participate. Please share this meeting far and wide.

PinehurstTrafficMeeting

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is launching a collaborative process to review traffic safety along the walking and biking routes to Pinehurst School. As safety is our number one priority, and children walking and biking to school are especially vulnerable, we are committed to improving school traffic safety by reducing speeding and collisions and providing safer places for families to walk and bike to school.

SDOT will bring the community together to consider changes to the streets around Pinehurst School in an effort to bring down speeds and make our streets safer for everyone. Together we will determine the specific nature and design elements through the process described below. New safety measures to be considered through this project may include, but not be limited to, the following: signs, traffic calming, road striping, traffic signals, sidewalks, and crosswalks.

Come to the community meeting on May 13 or 14, 2014 to meet the share your ideas about making it safer to travel in your neighborhood.
