A reader wrote to us about another preschool/daycare option in the neighborhood: Northgate Early Learning Center, a non profit daycare and preschool (on 8th Ave NE and NE 123rd St) has immediate openings. Here’s a flyer.
One of Seattle’s goals is to increase the city’s tree canopy. Trees make our streets friendly to walk and bike. They soak up rainwater, keeping our streams, lakes and Puget Sound clean. Trees melt away stress and help us recover from illness. They calm traffic, and help avoid accidents. Trees clean our air, making it easier to breathe. And they provide welcome shade from the sun on days like these! Trees For Neighborhoods, a project of Seattle reLeaf, provides up to four free trees per household, plus watering bags for them, training on proper planting and care, and ongoing care reminders. There are also workshop opportunities on topics like young tree pruning. This year’s application process is about to begin (early August). Application information is on the Seattle reLeaf web site, www.seattle.gov/trees/treesforneighborhoods.htm. Trees ‘sell out’ quickly, so apply early. In the fall, pick up your trees and attend a planting workshop. Then bring them home and plant them. We have many fine trees in Pinehurst, but we can do even better!
Hi, I’m Sid Vicious and I joined the ‘hood’ in December. I was very small, and not a fan of the cold & wet, so I didn’t get out much. Now that it’s sunny and warm, you may see me running through my yard and chasing all my kitty bro’s and sisters. I love cats! You might also see me when I occasionally wander off the driveway and down the sidewalk in search of new smells (my parents are building a fence to try to contain me better). If you see me on one of my walks, I’ll probably bark at you and your friends, but don’t worry, I’m friendly. I just had my one-year birthday and am still learning my social skills. Laurie and Jim have lived in the Pinehurst neighborhood since 1985. They have had Portuguese Water Dogs since 1990. The photo is of their oldest dog, “Kitty”, on the occasion of her 14th Birthday last April 1st, and her granddaughter, Billie, giving her a kiss for the occasion. Portuguese Water Dogs were bred in Portugal (no surprise there) where they were taught to herd fish into fishermen’s nets, to retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and to act as couriers from ship to ship, or ship to shore. They’re also known for their non-shedding and hypoallergenic qualities. Jane Addams K-8 @ Pinehurst BEX IV Project Seattle voters approved the Seattle Public Schools Building Excellence IV (BEX IV) Capital Levy in February 2013, which includes the project to replace the existing Pinehurst building with a newly constructed building for the Jane Addams K-8 School on the Pinehurst site. The meeting will be presented by representatives of Seattle Public Schools’ Capital Projects Team and the architect, and will include information about the project’s early design progress. You will be able to learn more about the project scope, schedule, and design explorations, and ask questions. For more information, please visit: http://bex.seattleschools.org. As background, SPS is planning to relocate the environmental science-focused K-8 program that is currently located in the Jane Addams building to a new building at the site of Pinehurst School, to allow for a new comprehensive middle school in the Jane Addams building. The estimated capacity of this new building will be approximated 700 students. The capacity of the current Pinehurst building is roughly 250 (with about 150 students currently enrolled). This will be a rather large building on a very small parcel of land (a little over 3 acres). The upcoming meeting will be focused on the design of the new building. We are not sure if they will get into what (if any) traffic/street modifications will be necessary in order to support the increase in student population at the site. For families looking for a small pre-k option, there is a new fives program opening in neighboring Maple Leaf. Robin’s Nest Pre-K is open for tours this summer. The very popular Little Nest Preschool located here in Lake City has expanded and created another small nest for big kids! Older preschoolers preparing for Kindergarten are in for a treat with a small class size, an emphasis on science and cooking along with multiple field trips to enrich our classroom themes.
