Take the Northgate Urban Design Survey

Here’s an opportunity to weigh in on the Northgate Urban Design Framework (UDF). You can read the entire draft herebut you needn’t read it because the survey describes features on which it asks your opinion.

The UDF, developed with extensive community input, defines the future vision of the Northgate area.

The UDF’s guidance will:

·         Improve pedestrian and bicycle connections to and from the transit center

·         Make transit transfers more convenient

·         Encourage attractive and engaging public spaces and streetscapes

·         Strengthen the community’s sense of place

·         Create a healthy and sustainable community

Take the survey herehttp://svy.mk/1447qSe

The deadline for your input on the draft UDF is September 30.

Volunteer for Adopt-A-Street Work Party 8/18 11:00

logo-seattle-adopt-a-streetPinehurst Community Council is in the City’s Adopt-A-Street program.  We’ve adopted these streets for occasional litter pickup:

  • Pinehurst Way NE – from Roosevelt Way NE to NE 125th St
  • NE 115th St – from 20th Ave NE to Pinehurst Way NE

Our next work party will be Sunday, August 18 at 11 a.m.  We’re looking for 6-8 volunteers. It takes about two hours. We have grabbers, safety vests, brooms and a sharps container.  You bring work gloves. If you are interested in helping, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

We’ll meet at the northeast corner of Pinehurst Way and NE 115th St, rain or shine.

This is a fun event – we work in pairs and have good laughs over some of the stuff we put in our garbage bags. And it’s always nice when a neighbor honks or gives us a thumbs-up for our efforts!

Our commitment is for four cleanup events a year, but volunteering for this event does NOT commit you to future work parties.

If you participate, you’ll sign a volunteer sign-in sheet that gives you insurance coverage during the event.  I’ll go over safety precautions with everyone before we start.

Information about the City’s program is at:

http://www.seattle.gov/util/environmentconservation/getinvolved/adoptastreet/.

Come on and join the party, meet your neighbors and make a difference!

We will be meeting for volunteer sign-in at the Trail Map Marker just opposite the Golf Course parking lot (11th Ave NE and NE 135th st).

We hope to see you there!

P.S. Monthly work parties are being planned, hopefully for the 3rd Saturday morning every month. We are starting small, just cutting back encroaching vegetation, but we hope to move on to removing invasives and replanting natives in the autumn and winter. We hope you can join us!

Free Lunches by Hunger Intervention Program

HIPHunger Intervention Program (HIP) is providing free lunches to anyone 18 years and younger at four north Seattle sites this summer. As an extension to HIP’s school year program to reduce hunger at local elementary schools; this year’s HIP Summer Meal Program is funded partially by the federal Summer Food Service Program, and supported by grants and interns from United Way King County and HIP staff and volunteers.

From Monday through Friday until August 30, free sack lunches meeting the federal requirements for the USDA Summer Food Service Program are served at the following sites. The hours at the Lake City sites were recently extended to accommodate more families. The program runs through August 30.

Lake City Court Playground 12536 33rd Avenue NE, 12:00 – 1:30 pm

Lake City Community Center 12531 28th Avenue NE, 12:00 – 1:30 pm

Jane Addams Playground 11051 34th Avenue NE, 12:00 – 1:30 pm

“We encourage children to stop by and enjoy a lunch at any of these sites. There’s no need to sign up or show any proof of income. These lunches are for any child who is 18 years or younger,” says Kate Murphy, HIP Executive Director.

The meals are prepared daily and transported to each distribution site by the HIP staff and volunteers in the Lake City Presbyterian Church kitchen. Food donations from Food Lifeline, Northwest Harvest, and local farmers, and purchased food are used in making the lunches. The University District Food Bank generously provides shelf-stable food bags each Friday at all of HIP’s meal sites, which enables children to take home meals and eat it over the weekend.

Pinehurst Pets – Natalie and Dolly

natalieanddolly-001

Behold Natalie and Dolly, the best-dressed gals in Pinehurst. Actually, Natalie, on the left, doesn’t especially  like to dress up, so she sports a simple but elegant bow. Now Dolly – Dolly loves to dress up. Here she is in her new dress. Her favorite color is pink, by the way. They can often be seen out and about walking with their nice dog-walker.

If you would like to see your pet featured in the Pinehurst Pets column, please send a photo and a story about your pet to nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

Kids Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

Edda-AngryBirdsPinehurstfest

This month’s drawing is by Edda. She made it at Pinehurstfest, and obviously this influenced her choice of topic. Nice work, Edda, and thanks for making the park beautiful this summer!

Check out Edda’s drawing in the kiosk in the Pocket Park at NE 117th St & 19th Ave NE.

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 10712 5th Ave NE.
