Here is an update on the Pinehurst Safeway renovation project. (from March 2007)
A community meeting was held in July 2006 and was attended by about 100 Pinehurst residents, Safeway and city officials including City Councilmembers Peter Steinbrueck and Tom Rasmussen and Director of the Department of Planning and Development, Diane Sugimura. Using feedback from that meeting, we have continued to discuss the possibility of a renovation of the Pinehurst Safeway.
About 12 Pinehurst residents volunteered to serve as part of a Community Design Committee. We met in December 2006 and again in January 2007 with Safeway and their architects. Our meeting in December walked through a number of neighborhood concerns that were raised at that meeting and at the previous community meeting last July.
In March 2007, Safeway and their architect, Dykeman, walked through preliminary design concepts. It was clear that the design ideas were thoughtfully considered in light of the July 2006 community meeting and the December Design Committee meetings. Some aspects include:
- Green elements throughout (including energy efficient, reduced emission elements, local materials, low water landscaping)
- An attractive and warm mission/craftsman design
- A covered outdoor seating area with an indoor/outdoor fireplace off of a coffee shop – on 15th
- Possible retention of existing trees in SE corner of the property
- A noise reducing barrier near loading dock
- Varied roof shapes – not completely flat
- Trellises and other design elements to reduce a “boxy” feel
- New sidewalks on 123rd and 16th (possibly permeable surfaces – depending on results of soil study)
- New rubbish bins that are attached to a septic system – to minimize (eliminate?) odor that currently exists
