Neighborhood Matching Fund Workshops

At our last council meeting we had a guest speaker talk about grants for community building projects. Here is an opportunity to learn more about the process of submitting a grant to the Neighborhood Matching Fund.

April 17, 2012 (Seattle, WA) – The first of three workshops offered by Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Matching Fund will occur this Thursday, April 19, from 5:45 – 7:45 p.m. at the Douglass Truth Library, 2300 E. Yesler Way.  This workshop is for neighborhood groups interested in applying to the Large Project Fund which provides up to $100,000 in matching funds for community-building projects. Attendance at one of the three workshops is required in order to submit an application.

Two additional workshops are also being offered:

Greenwood Library, 8016 Greenwood Ave N

Saturday, April 28. 10 a.m. – 12 noon

Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, 4408 Delridge Way SW

To learn more visit www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/nmf/largeproject.htm. To request an interpreter (one week prior to preferred workshop), applicants can contact Mercedes Tenuta at 206.233.0093 or email Mercedes.tenuta@seattle.gov. The deadline for the Large Projects Fund is July 16, 2012.

The Neighborhood Matching Fund (NMF) Program awards matching funds for projects initiated, planned, and implemented by community members in partnership with Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. Its overall goal is to build stronger and healthier neighborhoods through community involvement and engagement. Every award is matched by a neighborhood’s contribution of volunteer labor, donated materials, in-kind professional services, or cash.

Kids Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

This week six year old Lukas’s drawing is on display in the kiosk at Pinehurst Pocket Park, NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE. Lukas made it at last year’s Pinehurstfest. Thanks, Lukas – great job!

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 539 NE Northgate Way.

New Victory Heights Blog

Want more local news? There’s a new Victory Heights blog: http://victoryheightsblog.wordpress.com/. Follow it on twitter, too: http://twitter.com/victoryheights2

There is also one here (not new): http://toweringfirs.wordpress.com/.

The North District Council also bought a domain name and blog site for Victory Heights but hasn’t started them up.

All the interest in local news-sharing is wonderful!  For now, keep your eye on these blogs. I’m sure they’ll announce any consolidations  that may occur over time.

Check Out Everyblock For Neighborhood News

       http://seattle.everyblock.com/

Here’s a website that collects events from many sources into location-based groupings. Most of the Seattle neighborhoods are there but you can also make your own boundaries. I made one for an expanded Pinehurst that extends east of 15th Ave NE from its Pinehurst. It’s called PinehurstSeattle and it’s public, so you can use it if you wish.

Examples of events: real estate listings; building permits; events; local deals; 911 calls; volunteer opportunities. The search engine isn’t 100% accurate but it’s interesting nonetheless.

Help Design Usage of Pierre Properties in Lake City

Bill Pierre Ford car dealerships are moving out of Lake City. The Pierre family wants to leave a legacy in honor Bill and it has expressed interest in having the community in the design process. A UW professor is holding several public meetings to get input. The first one is tonight (Thursday, 4/12, 6:30) at the Lake City Community Council at Lake City Mennonite Church on NE125th St. Sorry for the late notice. There are two more meetings scheduled. Please see http://www.familiesforlakecity.com/pierre-properties-whats-the-deal/ for the dates and times, as well as a map showing the properties.

Democratic Party Caucuses Sunday, 4/15

The Democratic Party caucuses are this Sunday at 1PM. Since President Obama is most certainly the candidate for reelection, the  focus will be on party platform. To find your caucus location, go to http://www.wa-democrats.org/caucuses

Spring Clean Pinehurst

Spring Clean runs April through May. It’s a time for cleaning up the neighborhood, and the City will help. Pick up litter, paint out graffiti, remove invasive plants!

You can get free litter cleanup bags, gloves, safety vests and waste disposal.

It would be great if you organized your neighbors for an event around your streets.

For more information call the Spring Clean hotline at 206-233-7187 or visit www.seattle.gov/util/SpringClean.
