Lake City Way Visioning Project

Do you have ideas for the future of Lake City? Come to a visioning workshop!
When: May 19, 2012 9 am-1:30 pm
Where: Nathan Hale High School – 10750 30th Ave NE

The Pierre family wants to include the community in discussions of how to develop the Bill Pierre properties along Lake City Way once the car dealerships move out. UW Professor Marty Curry and four graduate urban design and planning students are leading a series of community discussions to collect ideas and help develop a vision.

Keep in touch with the project  here where you can see a map of the properties, notes from meetings, and other information. More information about the May 19th meeting is here.

5th Ave NE @ Northgate Way Closed May 5 & 6

I saw this on Maple Leaf Life and got more details from the Department of Transportion project page:

In preparation for intersection improvements at 5th Avenue NE and Northgate Way Seattle City Light will be closing Fifth Avenue NE at NE Northgate Way from 6 a.m. to noon on both May 5 and May 6.

The weekend closures are necessary so that crews can remove existing utility poles and install two new 90-foot poles using a huge crane.  The crane will take up much of the roadway and is necessary to lift and position the heavy poles. While this utility work takes place all travel lanes on Fifth Avenue NE will be closed as follows:

  • Saturday, May 5, 6 a.m. to noon, from NE Northgate Way 300 feet north
  • Sunday, May 6, 6 a.m. to noon, from NE Northgate Way 300 feet south

The road closure includes sidewalk access on the east side of Fifth Avenue NE. During the road closures Eighth Avenue NE is the suggested alternative route for drivers.

Seattle City Light crews will also transfer overhead wires and underground connections to the new and relocated poles, which will require Fifth Avenue NE curbside lane restrictions through Mid May.

Contact Scott Thomsen at (206) 615-0978 or scott.thomsen@seattle.gov for more information.

Specifically the 2012 project will:

  • Add an additional left-turn lane from westbound NE Northgate Way onto southbound Fifth Ave NE
  • Build a landscaped median with trees on NE Northgate Way just west of the intersection
  • Extend the northbound Fifth Avenue NE right turn lane that turns eastbound onto NE Northgate Way
  • Create decorative crosswalks on all four sides of the intersection
  • Install a new signal system and improve drainage and water quality

In all areas of widening new sidewalks, planting strips
and street trees will be placed

Key benefits include:

  • Enhanced transit speed and reliability
  • Safer and more attractive pedestrian environment
  • Improved mall access from the east, reducing congestion

The NE Northgate Way & 5th Avenue NE Intersection and Pedestrian Improvements Project will help buses and all roadway traffic move more smoothly through and into this busy retail core.  With better traffic flow during each timed signal also comes reduced waiting times for pedestrians, at the enhanced crosswalks to be installed on all four sides of the intersection.  Overall, the results will make walking, biking, and riding transit easier.

Local Land Use Notices

We don’t get a lot of these in the immediate vicinity but there were three yesterday. The first two are really the big ones but I figured I’d mention everything in the area while I’m at it. The first one is north of Northgate between I-5 and Target. The second is for Jackson Park Golf Course obviously.

Appeal Hearing Notice for 11200 1ST AVE NE

Council Land Use Action to rezone 365,040 sq. ft. of land from MR to NC3-85. The property is bounded on the North by two parcels (11300 1st Ave NE and 11301 3rd Ave NE) on the East by 3rd Ave NE, the South by NE Northgate Way and the West by 1st Ave NE. Addendum to EIS has been prepared.

Notice of Application for 1000 NE 135TH ST

Parklets in Pinehurst?

Parklets are small parks set up in the public right-of-way. They’re a way to add greenery and lingering spaces in urban environments. A parklet might have a food truck, tables and chairs, or potted plants and art. Seattle is interested in adding parklets to the urban landscape. If you have any ideas for public spaces in Pinehurst, check out the article in Seattle City Councilmember Mike O’Brian’s website (it’s the second article down) here, where you can also take a survey to submit your ideas.

Walking Tour of Northgate Saturday, 4/28

Fifty years ago Northgate was a model development for how we would live and work: mostly by automobile and parking lots.

Now with light rail, there’s hope Northgate can once again be a model neighborhood — for walking, biking, and riding transit.

This Saturday, April 28th, 10am – 12 pm,  join Futurewise, FeetFirst, and Cascade Bicycle Club for a walking tour and discussion.

It will start with a presentation on principles of transit-oriented communities. Then there will be a tour of the neighborhood on foot, with discussion of particular design and planning issues, including: infill, parking, ped/bike design, and green infrastructure.

Staff from the Seattle Department of Planning and Development, King County Metro, Sound Transit, and Puget Sound Regional Council will be on hand to help answer questions.

RSVP (and get event location) here .

Seattle Neighborhood Greenways – in Pinehurst?

Neighborhood Greenways initiative is striving to create roadways that safely connect community services and amenities.  The hope is for efficient traffic and fewer accidents, increased local economic activity and real estate values, more fitness opportunities resulting in better public health, reduction in CO2 emissions, an increase in native habitat and a more pleasant and beautiful street.

Do you have a Pinehurst street in mind that would benefit from traffic calming, bike lanes, etc? Here is a website that brings together a lot of information about working towards a solution:

http://neighborhoodgreenwayssea.wordpress.com/

There are photos of streets in other cities and countries, there’s information about funding a project, and there are design guidelines.

If you’re interested in bringing the initiative to Pinehurst, there’s a meet-up on May 3rd, 6-8 PM, at Capital Hill Library, 425-Harvard Ave E.. RSVP is requested, which you can dohere as well as get more information about the meet-up agenda.
