Message from Terrie Johnston, Crime Prevention Coordinator

This came from Terrie today. Please note many burglaries happen in homes with unlocked doors and windows. And she also reminds us that observant neighbors who call 9-1-1 are a great help. Here’s her email:

“Please read about some of the residential burglaries and auto thefts that occurred in the North Precinct neighborhoods this weekend!

Occupied Burglaries:

4000 blk. 41 Ave. NE during the late night/early morning hours a burglar opened a kitchen window, entered the house and took purse, wallets, ID, credit cards, checkbook, 2 cell phones; IPad; and three sets of car keys.  The Acura was subsequently stolen. (People were home sleeping-no force used)

3800 40 Ave. NE between midnight and 0600 hrs. burglar entered through an unlocked patio door. Cell phone; computer; IPad; 3 sets of keys, purse, wallet, credit cards and ID taken.

9700 blk 27 Ave. NE at approx. 3 a.m. the burglar threw some concrete through a ground level window and grabbed the laptop and took off.

Daytime, unoccupied burglaries:

12500 Corliss Ave. N. the front door was kicked in and coins, jewelry and IPOD taken.

2100 blk. N. 117 a secluded window was forced open and the home ransacked.

14000 blk. 1st NW the outdoor table was placed below a kitchen window.  A handgun and ammo. Stolen

7700 31 Ave. NW  a backdoor kicked in; jewelry taken.

Kudos to 9-1-1 caller in the 5100 blk. of Woodlawn Ave. N. who called in a suspicious person looking into car windows with a flash light in the early, early morning hours.  Officers responded, checked the area on foot and found nothing initially.  On the officers’ departure from the area, they saw a vehicle with rear window broken out and the alarm sounding.  They saw a person who matched the caller’s description who took off running when the officers approached.  K9 was in the area and conducted a search, as the officers could hear the individual thrashing around in back yards. Search was negative, but the determined officers found a window opened a crack.  Homeowners arrived as officers were trying to knock on door and resident gave the patrol officers permission to search the unoccupied home.  They located the suspect hiding out upstairs and placed him under arrest.  This might not have occurred had the watchful neighbor not made a good 9-1-1 call.  You are our eyes and ears!

Seattle Buddhist Center in Pinehurst

I try to reach out to local businesses and groups in the Pinehurst area to introduce themselves to the neighborhood, especially when they’re new or just less visible. If there are others you think people would like to learn about, let me know. Also, it took me much longer to post this than planned so the slightly dated new years reference is my fault. But if you’ve been neglecting yours already, you could always try again without waiting for the end of the year.

If your resolutions for 2012 included such things as learning to relax, finding more quiet time, or connecting with a more spiritual dimension then help may be nearer than you think.

The Seattle Buddhist Center relocated to the Pinehurst neighborhood in the late summer of 2009 and we are loving our beautiful new home. We are part of an international Buddhist movement called the Triratna Buddhist Community (formerly the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order) which started in 1967 and has been growing ever since, with centers all across the world offering a space for people to learn about the Buddha’s teachings and to deepen their practice in the company of like-minded individuals.

If you’re new to meditation and Buddhism (or have some experience in another tradition and wish to find out more about practice within the Triratna movement) you might consider signing up for one of our six-week Introduction to Meditation and Buddhism classes. Our Winter class is already fully booked but we will run another in the Spring. In this class you will learn two complementary meditation practices (including coaching in finding the most helpful posture for you) and will be supported in establishing a regular practice at home; additionally we will introduce key Buddhist teachings such as the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path.

Alternatively you are welcome to drop in to our Sangha Night on Sundays which usually includes some combination of meditation, devotional practice, teaching and discussion on how to apply Buddhist principles to our lives, as well as plenty of tea and cookies! We usually gather between 6 and 6:15pm and the evening runs until 8:15. Sangha Night is suitable for all levels of experience including beginners.

You’ll find us a friendly bunch, indeed community and friendship is an important aspect of our particular slant on Buddhist practice and the welcoming vibe in our centers is often noted by newcomers.

So if you’re curious to meet your new Buddhist neighbors please do feel very welcome to come along – we’re excited to meet you too!

The Seattle Buddhist Center is located at 12056 15th Ave NE, Unit C-2. The entrance is on NE 123rd St, across the street from Safeway.

For more information please visit seattlebuddhistcenter.org and feel free to email us with any questions.

North Corridor Transit Project Update

Extending light rail from Northgate to Lynnwood

Sound Transit has been studying potential light rail routes and station between Northgate and Lynnwood along Interstate 5 based on results of environmental scoping and community input received last summer and fall.  Recently the Sound Transit Board of Directors took a major step toward expanding mass transit by confirming that light rail is the best mode of transit and I-5 is the right corridor to study based on ridership, travel times, service levels and cost.

Drop on by! Let’s have a chat.

Learn where the light rail route could be located along I-5, see where stations are being considered and ask questions of project staff.

Occupied Burglary Report

This message came today from Terrie Johnston, SPD Crime Prevention Coordinator. Please note her recommendations for crime prevention in the home:

“Please be aware that yesterday and today, in the early morning hours, 3 occupied burglaries occurred – 2 in Maple Leaf neighborhood and 1 near Greenlake.  It appears that the victims in all cases believed that they may have left their doors unlocked.  Wallets, cash, credit cards, purse, Nook and car keys were taken.  Subsequently, the victims’ cars were also stolen.  Unfortunately, in one of the stolen vehicles, the victim reported leaving his cell phone, wallet (social security card inside); and expensive ski equipment.  Our Burglary/Theft detectives are working closely with Patrol officers on evidence collection and our Crime Analysis Detective is studying reports for other leads.

In the meantime, please be diligent about using the locks and latches you have.  Rethink your habit of putting your purse/wallet and car keys on the table upon entering your home.  If you hear of see anything suspicious, please do not hesitate to call 9-1-1.  I am available to conduct free home security surveys if you want to look at what improvements could be made from a burglary prevention standpoint.  We still recommend leaving your front porch light on from dusk until dawn.  Motion-sensitive lights are ideal for side and back yards, and for over carports, driveways, garages, etc.  Watchful empowered neighbors are your best alarms!  Thanks for sharing this information.  My phone at the North Precinct is 206-684-7711.  tj “

Kids Art in the Pinehurst Pocket Park

Thanks to the Parks Dept, the graffiti is cleaned off of the kiosk, and there’s a brand new Plexiglas cover. So it’s time to put up a new picture made by a Pinehurst youngster.

This week’s art in the Pocket Park is by Eileen. She drew it at Pinehurstfest last summer. Thanks, Eileen, for your wonderful contribution to our park! Pinehurst Pocket Park is at NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE.

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 539 NE Northgate Way.
