This week’s Pinehurst Pet is Doolin. He’s named after a coastal village in Ireland. This cute fellow was a stray, taken in by a pair of cycling enthusiasts. Not sure if Doolin has ever ridden along with them on their tandem. What’s a bicycle made for three called? Doolin’s probably just as happy sticking around the house and yard, where he has a feline friend, Max, who looks a lot like him. Oh, need I mention that he’s very fond of catnip?

This summer there is unusually high number of car prowls and car thefts in Maple Leaf, our neighbors to the south. See article in Maple Leaf Life. This is a good reminder to take precautions. What attracts car thieves is opportunity. Don’t make it easy for them.

The opening of newly remodeled Pinehurst Playfield Shelter House was celebrated at Saturday’s Pinehurstfest. There was a ribbon cutting ceremony, short speeches by dignitaries involved in the project, and delicious carrot cake. In addition, Garth Ferber stood by during Pinehurstfest to talk to people interested in the project. You can see a fact sheet on this blog’s shelter house page here. The shelter house is in the park at NE 120th St and 14th Ave NE. You may notice in the photo below that the doors are sort of funky. We’re still awaiting the new doors. This phase will include Pinehurst. The new lightbulbs reduce maintenance costs by lasting longer. They are also brighter and whiter, allowing for better visibility and identification of colors. Please see this flyer for more information. In late June, notorious Rick’s Nightclub on Lake City Way was sold at auction. Though it is not confirmed, another bidder at the auction, the recent operator of Jiggles, said that the winner was associated with another strip club business, Deja Vu. See PI article for more information. 7/21/2011 update – someone just reported seeing a sign there, “Coming soon, Dreamgirls at Rick’s”. Have you registered your block party for August 2nd’s Seattle Night Out? The block party is a great way to meet your neighbors. Also, here’s an idea to fight graffiti on your street: put out a donation jar during the party and collect money to buy things for a graffiti kit. Then you have a kit all ready next time you spot a tag on your street. You can either rotate the clean up job, or keep the kit at someone’s house so it can be picked up by anyone who sees graffiti. A kit can include:
The Fine Diner, on the corner of Northgate Way and Roosevelt Way, opened thiw week. It’s a ‘soft opening’ – they haven’t done any advertising yet. They’re testing their processes with walk-in traffic that happens to notice the OPEN sign so that everything is smooth by the time they advertise. This means WE can be among the first to try the new neighborhood restaurant! The prices are modest. For instance, the Fine Diner Burger is $7.75, “seasoned and broiled to perfection then topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles and mayo on a grilled potato bun”, and it includes your choice of cheese. There are also chicken wraps, a philly steak hoagie, and other sandwiches, as well as salads and French onion soup and clam chower (cup $3.99/bowl $5.99). Dinners include spaghetti & meatballs for $9.89, a 12 oz rib eye for $19.45, and others in that range. Dinners include a cup of soup or small house salad, seasonal vegetables, and choice of fries, onion rings, sweet potato fries or coleslaw. There are some vegetarian offerings such as grilled cheese sandwich, quesadilla, and jumbo garden burger. There’s a ‘kiddies eats’ section, too. There are free refills on some of the beverages.
