Art At Pinehurst Pocket Park

Edda-5

This week five year old Edda is gracing our pocket park with her art. It’s a fun self-portrait of Edda watering her…cat!  Oh, and her flowers.  See it up close in the kiosk at the park – at NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE.

Thank you Edda!

At Pinehurstfest, July 16, there will be a table where kids can draw pictures for the pocket park. FrameIt on Northgate Way has donated matt board for this project. Come on by Pinehurstfest and create art for the park! If your child already has a work we can display, or wants to create one at home, please contact nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

The City *Does* Listen to Public Feedback

Remember when we posted  here about Metro plans to reduce the number of stops for bus routes 41 & 73? After listening to comments, Metro decided to keep the north and south stops at 15th Ave NE at NE 123rd St and NE 127th St, which at originally been planned for closure.

This is a great reminder that communicating our needs and wishes to our city officials is important, and that improvements CAN happen when we speak and they listen.

Don’t be afraid to get involved and speak up!

Low Flying Helicopters in the Neighborhood This Week

I saw one, did you? The U.S. Department of Energy’s Remote Sensing Laboratory is collecting baseline levels of radioactive materials from July 11-28. The study has been planned since 2009. The helicopter will fly about 300 feet above the ground at 70 mph. Data will be used for comparison if a radiation emergency occurs later. That will help determine where potential health effects may exist and to warn people in the affected area.

Reduction of Bus Service if Metro Shortfall Not Solved

Metro is facing a 17% reduction in service due to budget shortfalls in the 2012-13 budget. This document shows a possible scenario for eliminating 600,000 hours of transit service over the next two years. It shows our north end buses 67, 68, 72 and 73 could be eliminated. Metro is making a proposal for a congestion reduction charge of $20 per King County vehicle to avoid these cuts.

The Metropolitan King County Council’s Transportation, Economy and Environment Committee will host three special evening hearings to hear public testimony on the proposed transit service reduction and the Metro Transit budget crisis. These meetings are an opportunity for you to learn about the proposals and weigh in on the future of Metro transit. The meeting in Seattle is:

Tuesday, July 12, 6:00 p.m.
King County Council Chambers
516 Third Avenue, 10th Floor, Seattle

Tips for Reducing Bike Thefts

It’s summertime and we’re all out riding our bikes, right? The last thing we want is for our bikes to get stolen. Burglary detectives see stolen bikes being sold within hours of the theft on e-bay; Craigslist; in pawn shops and even on the street (one thief was selling stolen bikes on the Burke Gilman Trail). Here are some crime prevention tips from Seattle Police:

  • Write down the serial number of your bike and keep the number in a safe place.  Look for the serial number on your bike’s head tube, seat post tube, under the crank, or on the frame’s rear wheel mount.
  • Take a photograph of your bicycle.
  • If your bike is stolen, call SPD to report the crime and give the call-taker the serial number and any other identifying marks on your bicycle.  Try to get a police incident number that you can use for your insurance claim.
  • Always lock your bike, the whole bike (through the frame and both wheels).  Use more than one kind of lock if possible.  Typically, bolt cutters are used to cut through the locking devices.  Not all locks are equal, and you get what you pay for with locks.  If the lock’s manufacturer offers a warranty or insurance, register the lock and get the serial number of it.
  • Lock your bike to something permanent.  Lock it in a visible spot and someplace nearby.
  • Lock your bike even if you are parking it on a porch; in the basement, the garage or storage unit.  Storing your bike inside is preferred.
  • As always, use 9-1-1 to report anything suspicious.

Another way to reduce this type of crime is to never buy stolen bikes. If the deal is too good to be true, it probably is stolen.

These tips are brought to us by Terrie Johnston, our Crime Prevention Coordinator.

Fireworks Are Illegal in Seattle But Don’t Call 9-1-1

This message comes to us from our Crime Prevention Coordinator, Terrie Johnston:

“Please remember that fireworks are not legal in the City of Seattle.  The 4th of July is perhaps the busiest day of the year for our 9-1-1 Communications Center.  The Comm. Ctr. becomes overloaded by non-emergency fireworks calls.  So only for July 4th , DO NOT call 9-1-1 unless you have life threatening emergency and need immediate response from Police, Fire or Medics.  You may use our non-emergency line to report Firework violations at 625-5011.”

Have a safe and happy holiday!
