Crime Prevention Officer Diane Horswill Retiring

Our North End Crime Prevention Coordinator, Diane Horswill,  is retiring mid-March after 36 years in law enforcement.  She started out as a Community Police officer, then taught personal safety for ten years, and for the last 10+ years was in crime prevention.  She’s been Pinehurst’s go-to person for home security audits; block watchs; talks on crime prevention; Seattle Night Out.  She’s attended Pinehurstfest, given advice on situations we’ve encountered in our neighborhood, and reported every month at the North Precinct Advisory Council.

Diane’s experience and willingness to help has been invaluable to me as I’ve blogged on crime prevention. I will miss her, and Pinehurst will be losing a valuable resource.  If you wish to thank her for her service, please feel free to contact her at 206-684-7711 or diane.horswill@seattle.gov.   But hurry – I think she will be gone by the middle of March.

Budget cuts are having a big effect on the Police Department.  Our other North End Crime Prevention officer, the one for west of I5, retired a few months ago, leaving Diane the only one in the North Precinct, and one of only three Crime Prevention Coordinators in the city.  This program is essentially eliminated.  It is a big loss for Seattle.

In the future, our crime prevention issues can be directed to the head of the Community Police Team, Sgt. Dianne Newsom at 206-684-0794 or dianne.newsom@seattle.gov. So our direction is clear; we should start developing a relationship with the Community Police Team officers.  We’ll try to get one or more of them to attend our next community council meeting.

Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

Jacqulynn-Grade9

This week we’re shaking it up a bit! Instead of a Sacajawea Elementary artist, we have Jacqulynn, a 9th grader at Nathan Hale High.  She’s sharing with us her colored pencil manga-style drawing. Go see the original in the Pinehurst Pocket Park kiosk at NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE. Thanks for beautifying our park with your wonderful art, Jacqulynn!

Saving Seattle’s Parks

The Seattle Parks Foundation asked me to pass on some info on a survey on how to handle the cronic funding shortfall faced by the Seattle Parks Department. It’s a chance for people to voice their opinions and the best part is the results will be open to those who take it. Ok, maybe the best part is actually the chance to win a $50 REI gift card… Either way, it’s a great opportunity to make your voice heard and try to help solve a major problem facing the city.

Free Community Acupuncture Treatment

Last time this message came rather late so here’s some more notice for the future.

What’s better than a free acupuncture treatment?
A free treatment for both you and your friend!

Introduce someone new to the North Sea this Saturday (March 5th) and both of you will receive free treatments.

Sure, you could go out for coffee or take each other to the movies, but healing with someone you care about, in comfortable recliners, surrounded by soothing music? Now that’s a worthwhile experience!

How can you make this happen?
Sign up for an appointment on our website www.northseaforme.com
See you Saturday. You’ll be thankful you skipped the movie!

Stray cat on 20th Ave NE

Is your cat missing? A neighbor sent in this found cat report: “I took a photo of a cat that’s been seen on 20th Ave NE this week. I’m sending it along. It’s an un-neutered male, very friendly, seems to have no home, has a large wound on his left forehead. He’s something-ese (Burmese perhaps), quite pretty, smallish – not over ten pounds I’d say. He’s hungry, too.”

Design Review Board Vacancy – Community Position

The request below came from Dan Nolte in Councilmember Sally Clark’s office. They’re looking for a position on the Northeast Design Review Board. This is a great opportunity for an interested individual and especially for the neighborhood. It’s a chance to provide input on projects in our neighborhood and bring information back to our community of what’s happening.

We want to expand our search for the “Resident” position for the Northeast Design Review Board vacancy. This position is a joint appointment, chosen by the Council and Mayor.

The applicant should have a general understanding of design, and be able to articulate why they like or don’t like a building and recommend how it can be improved. More information about the details and the type of candidate we’d hope for is included below.

We’d ask for a Cover Letter and Resume, explaining their connection with the NE Community and how they’d be a good representative on the Design Review Board. Public participation in past Design Review Board projects is a HUGE plus.

Please send the cover letter and resume to dan.nolte@seattle.gov by February 25, 2011
