This week Bridget, a first grader at Sacajawea Elementary, is helping us beautify the pocket park. Check out her cool penguins in the kiosk at NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE. Thanks, Bridget, for showing your beautiful drawing! On March 8th, St. George Episcopal Church on NE 125th St. is hosting a Mardi Gras International Supper. There will be a Mardi Gras tree, music and Mardi Gras beads. Festivities begin at 5:30 pm. Adults $4.00, children 5 and under $1.00. Come join the fun! There’s a meeting coming up which will include some discussion of the Neighborhood Project Fund. The deadline for projects is coming up quickly and ideally everything would be in by the March 2nd North District Council meeting so it could be discussed there. The meeting is open the whole community and I’ve included some info on the agenda items below as well as more info on the NPF process. North District Council Meeting:
Neighborhood Project Funds: http://www.cityofseattle.net/neighborhoods/btgnsfcrf/ There’s an application on the site above but also feel free to contact me (phillip@pinehurstseattle.org) if you have questions or need help. Seattle Weekly’s Rose Tosti recently visited and reviewed BARK! Espresso. Here’s the review: I wanted to send another reminder of The Drowsy Chaperone at Seattle Musical Theater. There are a lot of local people working on the show again and the production was amazing. It’s by far one of my favorite I’ve seen at SMT. There were great songs and dance numbers and it was fun to see so many absurd characters all in one show. And is was nice to finally see a show that I missed on my trip to New York. WHEN Thursday, March 3 at 7:30pm TICKETS Recently a neighbor was jogging in the early evening dark when she noticed that a man on a bike was lingering at cross streets to see which way she’d turn and then he’d turn the same way, riding next to her or a bit ahead. Nothing came of it, but it was an uncomfortable situation. We asked our Crime Prevention Coordinator, Diane Horswill, for advice. – Take your cell phone with you when walking around at night, or even a small air horn if you’re in a remote area. – If you feel uncomfortable about a situation, get to an occupied house or business as soon as possible. The longer the following goes on, the stronger the person feels, knowing you are feeling uncomfortable. – Call 911 as soon as you can with as good a description of the person as possible. Even if nothing happened, the person may have gone further another time that the police know about. Then of course there are generic safety tips for walking/jogging at night: – Choose a well lit route. – Wear a reflective vest or other reflective gear. – Wear white, yellor or orange clothes. – Carry ID. – If you can’t go out with a buddy, let someone know what route you’re taking and how long you’ll be out. – Follow your instincts if you feel uncomfortable and move to a different area. – Leave your music at home so you can hear what’s going on around you. – If not on a sidewalk, walk or jog in the road on the side facing the traffic, NOT with the traffic. Our neighborhood is pretty safe, but it behooves us all to be careful out there! Look what showed up at the Pinehurst Pocket Park! We have Yuzu to thank for this fine giraffe. Yuzu is a second grader at Sacajawea Elementary. Check out the park at NE 117th and 19th Ave NE. Walk a few loops around the path to enjoy the Northwest plant eco-system and pause to enjoy Yuzu’s beautiful drawing. There are a lot of weekly events going on in Pinehurst. We’ve talked about many of these in the past but since the times have changed I figured it was a good time for a reminder. Personally, I’ve only been to trivia (and I won last night!) though I do know some die-hard bingo fans. What else is going on? Monday Night Trivia: Wednesday Free Bingo: Pool Tournaments:
Karaoke Nights: Remember to tell your neighbors how much you appreciate them on February 12th. Also, check this website for events around the city: http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/neighborday/ One event of note – the Seattle Fire Stations are open for public tours from 11 am to 2 pm. Ours is in Lake City, at 2806 NE 127th Street. What: King Conservation District Election (King CD) I wrote about what I called a secret election last year where you had to make it downtown or to one of 6 other libraries in the middle of the day on a Tuesday in order to vote. Looking back, I was just caught by surprise because I had never heard of the position and only got to vote because I was downtown for jury duty. This special election was for a Board of Supervisors position in the King Conservation District (King CD). For various reasons the turnout was very low (4200 people) but it was also climbing quickly from previous years (2,757 in 2009, 198 in 2008) and I wondered where the tipping point was in the cost of an election like that vs. getting it on a normal ballot. It’s still going to be difficult to get to word out and create interest but it should be easier for a lot of people this time around. They’re moving the voting online and voting period will last for 30 days. The King Conservation District (King CD) will be holding a public election for the Board of Supervisor position #2. This election will feature new, convenient and secure on-line voting. Voting begins February 15, 2011 and ends at 9 pm March 15, 2011. Click here for more information. To be eligible to vote, you must be registered to vote in King County (excluding residents of cities that are not members of the King Conservation District: Enumclaw, Federal Way, Milton, Pacific and Skykomish). In addition to the 30-day online voting period, the district will also provide a one-day, in-person voting option at the King CD’s Renton office on March 15 between 9 am and 9 pm. The King CD is located at 1107 SW Grady Way, Suite 130, in Renton. You can get more details on what the King Conservation District is here: There’s also a King Conversation District Election FAQ here: |
