Police Reports On-line

Police reports are now viewable on-line.  Go to http://www.seattle.gov/police/records/online.htm and click the box ‘View Police Reports’.  The first time, you’ll have to create an account.  After that, you log in and then you can browse an index of recent reports by day and type, or by date range.  It’s a bit inconvenient that you can’t narrow the search to an area of the city; you have to browse through the crime addresses.   When you find an incident you want to see, click on it.  The report comes up, but names and exact addresses are redacted.

Africa Mama Special Event

This may be one of the most vague posts I ever write since I can’t find any details to link to. But the Africa Mama store (on Lake City Way, just north of 125th) told me about some special events going on there this weekend that I wanted to share.

They’re closing soon but in the meantime they’re going to have quite a bit going on. I was told there would be live music, food, wine, and dance. I think it’s from 2-6pm both Saturday and Sunday but, again, I’m not 100% sure of all the details.

Hopefully somebody who knows more will see this and comment so I can clean this up…

It’ll be fun!  Helping at Pinehurstfest was one of my first introductions to the neighborhood when I first moved in and it was a great way to get to know people.

Seattle Musical Theatre Premiering Two Original Musicals

I’ve been to many shows at SMT so I’m eager to share this release I got.  Obviously these are quite a ways off still but I’ll post reminders as it gets closer.  But this way everybody has time to make sure their calendars are clear.  And it segways well into my next post because SMT will be making an appearance at Pinehurstfest this year.
Seattle Musical Theatre is excited to announce the launch of their Second Season: a series of original musicals.
While SMT is known for producing high quality productions of established Broadways shows, they realized that there are many talented individuals and groups who are writing exciting new works and looking for opportunities to produce their musicals. In keeping with their mission to provide opportunities for local artists to develop and perfect their crafts, SMT has dedicated their theatre and resources to help produce two new musicals:
The first show, Don Giovanni: A New Musical, is a completely re-envisioned musical theatre version of Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte’s opera by the same name and will run January 7 – 23, 2011.  Written by Seattle native Jesse Smith, it features a brand new score that mixes contemporary music with theatrical and operatic influences. The show enjoyed a great reception when it was produced at Cornish College of the Arts last summer and SMT is excited to stage its first professional incarnation.
The second show is called The King’s Proposal or the Marriage of Princess Guido. With book and lyrics by Michael Govier and music by Northwest native Curtis Williams, it is the comic tale of an evil King who tries to marry his daughter to an unwanted suitor and involves mistaken identities, forced marriage, forced puppetry, forced cross-dressing, forced songs and swords. The King’s Proposal has been produced as a straight play in Chicago and will enjoy its first production as a musical at SMT.  It will run March 20 – April 10, 2011.
Both shows will be fully produced , like any other SMT musical, with sets, costumes, lights, sound, props and a regular sized orchestra.
Main stage shows for SMT’s 2010-2011 season are Camelot, Chicago, The Drowsy Chaperone and Into the Woods.
Ticket prices for Second Season productions are $25-$30, $20 for students and seniors. All performances are at the Magnuson Park Theatre, 7400 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle. Great season ticket packages at steep discounts are still available.
For reservations or information, call 206-363-2809 or visit www.seattlemusicaltheatre.org

Henna Painting at the Northgate Library

Sorry for the short notice.  I just got sent this today but it looks like fun (I’m too old unfortunately) and I wanted to pass it along.  They have more events coming up and we’ll try to get those posted sooner in the future.

From Abby Bass, Teen Services Librarian:

Hey teens, want to learn the ancient art of henna painting? Come to a free workshop by local henna artist Krysteen Lomonaco at the Northgate Library, this Wednesday, June 23rd at 3 PM. You’ll learn how to create cool designs on paper that also work on skin, and practice on yourself.

Registration is required, so please call the branch at 206-386-1980 or stop by in person. The Northgate Library is located at 10548 5th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98125. Space is limited, so sign up today! For teens ages 12-18 only.

Hands-On Henna is part of The Seattle Public Library’s 2010 Summer Reading Program for Teens. To find out more about Summer Reading, sign up, track and review books, check out our website or stop by any library location! Happy reading, and we hope to see you at the library this summer!

Walk Bike Ride (+Streets For All Seattle) Video

Here’s a video about Walk Bike Ride and Streets for all Seattle which you can also hear about at our upcoming Community Meeting on Thursday. (See my subtle reference there?) It covers the issue from a variety of viewpoints around the city (including many areas that already have lots of sidewalks and infrastructure so they can’t understand the need for more) but it’s a good introduction to the topic and nice to see the issue getting some coverage and discussion.

Do you care about Thornton Creek Park #1?

From Dass Adams:

We are neighbors at Bridgehaven Condos on the North side of this wild Park that is downstream from Jackson Park Golf Course. We want to join with neighbors on the other sides of the Park to learn the history of this urban wetland and understand how to steward its plant and animal life. If you live near the Park and are interested, please contact us Dass Adams 227-3864 (gordondass@yahoo.com) or Anita Fisk 715-6601.

Obviously this would be a good time to mention the Thornton Creek Alliance (TCA). As of this posting, the website is down but the Facebook page is obviously available with more info:

We’ve posted about the Thornton Creek meetings many times in the past, including a very short notice update on their most recent one a few days ago.

Summer Crime Prevention

I just wanted to send along another reminder to lock your doors and windows and be aware. The summer months have higher rates of home invasions. It seems like a safe assumption that this is often related to more people leaving doors and windows open or unlocked as they’re in and out more often. I’ve been told again and again that it doesn’t matter how short a time you’re away, you still need to lock up. It can only take a few minutes to get in and out if something’s unlocked.

Also, it was passed along to me that there were multiple thwarted burglaries in the neighborhood near the Pinehurst Playground. They didn’t happen because neighbors were alert and got involved which is great. Though obviously the fact that they had to get involved is less great…
