Community Meeting Next Week!

Pinehurst Community Council Meeting
Thursday, June 24th, 7:00 pm
Amante Pizza and Pasta
12319 Roosevelt Way NE

Agenda Topics:

  • Streets For All Seattle
  • Ivy Removal
  • Jackson Park Trail Update
  • Pinehurstfest (July 17th!) Planning Update
  • NE 115th St Update
  • Crime/Safety Update
  • Comments, Discussion, Questions

The order of those is subject to change but that’s what we’ve got lined up so far.

Also, if you think you’ll be able to make it, let me know so I can get a general idea on attendance in advance. (phillip@pinehurstseattle.org or 206-973-7237) This doesn’t need to be a firm commitment so don’t need to worry if something comes up at the last minute. I’m just trying to get a general idea for planning…

And obviously, spread the word and everybody is welcome!

Thornton Creek Alliance Meeting Tonight

This is very short notice (and I apologize) but I just got this about 15 minutes ago…

Bruce Hubbard will share his memories and his vision for this new park (near Northgate Mall) due to be completed this summer. Also, the Park Naming Committee wants your input. (What kind of name is Park #2, anyway?) TCA’s general membership meeting is the place to meet neighbors, learn more about the watershed and the people & wildlife who live here, share your interests & concerns, find a committee to work on, and join a work party. It’s free & open to the public, so invite your friends. Hope to see you there!

Northgate Fifth Ave NE Traffic Changes

Before I scare everybody too much, I should add to this that these changes are apparently only temporary.  They’re going to be in place for the next 40 days or so during the construction period.

SDOT is making street improvements on Fifth Avenue NE in the Northgate neighborhood, including new stamped concrete crosswalks along all three sides of the intersection of Fifth and NE 112th Street (one block north of Northgate Way).  To relieve pressure from traffic overflow in this busy shopping area, vehicles exiting the “Northgate North” shopping center parking garage on NE 112th Street will now be able to head eastbound on NE 112th.  Once on NE 112th, left turns to northbound Fifth will continue to be prohibited, but right turns to southbound Fifth will be permitted.  As of 5 p.m. Friday, June 11th, signs will direct traffic in this new configuration.

To remind drivers northbound on Fifth Avenue approaching NE 112th that they cannot turn left, crews will also place an electronic messaging sign on Fifth Ave NE, south of Northgate Way.

To further reduce construction impacts to shoppers and businesses, crews will not work on SDOT’s Northgate, Fifth Ave NE Project on weekends.  Beginning Monday, June 14th, work hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Crews have now completed paving work on the outside curb lanes of north- and southbound Fifth Avenue, and completed the crosswalk for NE 112th.

Street Closures/Restrictions Summary

  • Right turn from eastbound NE 112th St onto southbound Fifth Ave NE now allowed
  • No left turn from eastbound NE 112th St onto northbound Fifth Ave NE
  • No left turn from northbound Fifth Ave NE onto westbound NE 112th St
  • Fifth Ave NE reduced to one lane in each direction between NE 113th St and Northgate Way

Jackson Park Public Workshop Meetings

The Friends of Jackson Park Steering Committee have hired Larson and Casteel as the landscape architect consultant.

They are planning to hold public workshop meetings at the golf course (in the white tent behind the restaurant) from 6pm – 8pm throughout the summer:
June 22
July 21
September 8

The workshops are designed to get public feedback. You write on “stickies” and place your suggestions on the map. So feel free to show up any time during the meeting.

Two Dog Yoga Free Week

I only got the email this evening so it’s unfortunately a bit late. A few of the events have already passed but there are plenty more still.

In gratitude to our regular Two Doggers, and with the hope of growing the pack, Two Dog offers a week of free classes twice a year. Come to as many classes as you want; bring your friends, neighbors and relatives along to share the doggie bounty. Free Week is a great way to get to know another teacher or check out a different practice. Classes are open to all levels unless otherwise noted.

N’gate Mall to Greenlake Ride Sunday, June 13, 1 p.m.

THIS RIDE’S FOR YOU!
NORTH SEATTLEITES – “EASY” CYCLISTS – COMMUTERS – ICE CREAM LOVERS!

Your neighbor and Cascade-certified ride leader, League of American Bicyclists LCI (League-Certified Instructor), and North Seattle Spokespeople and Easy Riders bicycle clubs Spokes Person (yours truly) is running this ride to show North Enders a good back route to Green Lake.

Ride description: Pedal an easy Northgate-to-Greenlake route with this supportive group to earn your self-host Ben & Jerry’s ice cream or slice of Zeke’s pizza.

Good to know:

  • We’ll begin with helmet and bicycle checks.
  • The pace is 8-10 mph maximum on the flat; slower going up hills. Faster riders can wait up top.
  • The hills are few and fairly easy, and we’ll wait at the top for sightseers and walkers.
  • Contact leader beforehand with concerns of any kind.

Commuters: This route is a precursor to one of the safest routes to downtown.

Children: Contact leader beforehand to discuss bringing children. We’re riding urban roads, and children need to have specific cycling skills.

SPOKESPEOPLE NORTH is sister to Spokespeople (http://spokespeople.us) and to West Seattle Spokespeople, linking Seattle neighborhoods by safest and easiest routes, and helping riders gain confidence and urban riding skills.

ADDITIONAL START INFO: Enter the south end of Northgate Mall from NE 103d Street, and look to your right for a ratty blue Subaru wagon and a short woman in Cascade Ride Leader garb. See the route map (URL) for approximate location or call if you get lost.

EASY RIDERS: For more easy rides, check out the other Spokespeople rides and also Easy Riders, at http://seattleeasyriders.net.

Police Search in Pinehurst

And once again I have a link to the wonderful SeattleCrime.com which has some more local news from late last night. Though (of course) it’s unfortunately crime related…

http://www.seattlecrime.com/2010/06/06/for-those-of-you-wondering-whats-going-on-in-pinehurst

Apparently a stolen car was dumped near Pinehurst Playfield and two suspects went running. One of them has been caught but it doesn’t sound like the other has yet. There aren’t too many details but I still thought people would be interested. And hopefully more information will come in.

Treehouse Coffee breakfast special this weekend (June 5-6)

From Michele: “This weekend we are serving a roasted potato hash with mushrooms and parmesan. As well, we’ve extended our hours for summer so we’ll be open until 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Thanks for coming by!”

Read more about Treehouse Coffee here and here.
