Walk Bike Ride Ballots Online

The Walk Bike Ride Ballot is now available online. You can either fill it out online or print it out and return it to the Mayor’s office. The ballots are also available at the community meetings that I mentioned earlier. The Bitter Lake meeting was tonight (anybody attend?) and there will be one in Northgate on June 21st.

Tell us what needs to change to make walking, biking and riding transit the easiest ways for you to get around Seattle.

Is it a closer bus stop? More sidewalks? More in-city rail transportation? More bike lanes? More pedestrian spaces?

Pinehurst Community Council – Save the Date!

Since I’m letting everybody know about all sorts of meetings, I wanted to let everybody know about the date for the next Pinehurst Community Council meeting as far in advance as I could. It will be Thursday, June 24th at 7pm at Amante Pizza and Pasta. We haven’t settled on the full agenda yet but I’m sure there will be lots of discuss and I’ll hopefully have more details on that soon. So everybody should save the date and plan on joining us!

Also, if you think you’ll be able to make it, let me know so I can get a general idea on attendance in advance. (phillip@pinehurstseattle.org or 206-973-7237) This doesn’t need to be a firm commitment so you don’t need to worry if something comes up at the last minute. I’m just trying to get a general idea for planning…

Jackson Park Trail – Summer Public Meetings

I got sent some information on the Jackson Park Trail Meetings coming up. This includes the walk through at the golf course as well as the later community meetings. More attendance and feedback for all the meetings will be helpful.

The Friends of Jackson Park Trail Selection Committee recently hired Larson Casteel to provide landscape architectural services to help us move forward with our goal for a trail perimeter trail. Services will include but are not limited to: development of a trail design, recording feedback from public meetings, preparation of preliminary cost estimate, and coordination with Friends of Jackson Park Trail and Seattle Parks and Recreation.

We would like to hold our first steering commitee meeting on June 1 at 6:30 pm to meet with Larson Casteel at Golf Course, walk the site, ask / answer questions, look at preliminary meeting materials. Discussions will also include upcoming public meetings, three total: June 22, July 21, and September 8. There will be a need for steering committee involvement during this process.

Please let me know your availability for June 1. It would be helpful to have a healthy turn out. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jasonandkatheryn@hotmail.com or Emily Fuller with Seattle Parks and Recreation at emily.fuller@seattle.gov.

Walk Bike Ride: Community Meetings

June 21st, 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Northgate Community Center. There are four upcoming Walk Bike Ride community meetings including one in our neighborhood. This will be a good time to share the priorities for our neighborhood. For example, would more sidewalks make it easier to get to the bus? It might be a good time to mention streetcars too.

WalkBikeRide

Walk Bike Ride is now coming to a neighborhood close to you, and we’d love it if you can join us for one of these June meetings.

These meetings seek to answer the question, “what needs to change in your neighborhood to in order to make walking, biking, and riding transit easy?”

Is it a more frequent bus route? More sidewalks? More transit? More bike lanes? Attendees will receive information on what types of projects are possible, and fill out a “ballot” that will help the city prioritize these types of transportation projects. Although these are geographically based, feel free to attend whichever best fits your schedule.

Treehouse Coffee breakfast special this weekend (May 29-30)

From Michele: “Whoever said you can’t have dessert first? This weekend we are serving a breakfast shortcake composed of Finales mandarin yogurt sweet bread topped with vanilla yogurt and fresh strawberries. Power up at the Treehouse before heading down to the Folklife festival and boogieing down!

Happy Memorial Day. Please take a moment to remember those who have given their lives and are currently serving to secure our freedom. You are not forgotten!”

Rainier Beach and Haller/Bitter Lake Communities Seeking Neighborhood Input

I’ve often heard Pinehurst called Haller Lake even with the giant freeway in between.  So I figured this was still relevant for all those Pinehurst residents associating themselves with Haller Lake or all those Haller Lake residents calling us part of Haller Lake.  The city is looking for people interested in helping with the neighborhood plans.  There’s more details below but anybody interested should apply.

In the late ‘90s, the City of Seattle engaged over 30,000 community members in creating a vision for the future of their neighborhood, which became Neighborhood Plans. Now the City is in the process of updating many of the plans, and beginning this summer, two neighborhoods will begin working on their updates: Rainier Beach and Broadview-Bitter Lake-Haller Lake.

Because of the importance of meaningful participation in the Neighborhood Plan Updates process, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods is establishing a local Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC) for each of the neighborhoods. Each Committee will consist of 12-15 members representing a broad and diverse range of community members, including socio-economically diverse residents, local business groups, and neighborhood organizations.

The Committee is a workgroup that will initially meet over a period of 18 months to discuss key elements of the plan update. Members will select planning and design consultants, engage the community through targeted outreach, review community input, and create recommendations that balance community interests. Seattle Department of Neighborhoods is looking for candidates who are passionate about their whole community, able to work well with a diverse group of people, and willing to work collaboratively to find solutions that reflect the opinions of all community members.

Interested individuals should submit a completed application form by Tuesday, June 8th. Applicants will be interviewed the week of June 14th and decisions will be announced June 21st. Orientation sessions will be on June 28th for Broadview-Bitter Lake-Haller Lake and June 29th for Rainier Beach neighborhood.  For more information, contact Sebhat Tenna at 206.733.9977. North Seattle Community Acupuncture Open House

I got sent some information on an open house for North Seattle Community Acupuncture next weekend which is included below.

Affordable healthcare is on the move as North Seattle Community Acupuncture moves to a bigger, better location within the Northgate area. To introduce itself to the neighborhood, the North Sea is hosting an Open House on Saturday, June 5th, from 12:30pm to 2:30pm at 11329 Pinehurst Way NE, Seattle, WA 98125. You will have a chance to tour the clinic, ask questions of the acupuncturists, and enjoy something good to eat and drink, too.

Expanding its footprint from 400 to 1100 square feet, the North Sea provides eight chairs for low-cost treatments throughout the week. Patients suffering from a wide variety of illnesses or injuries can get a complete acupuncture treatment for only $15 to $40 paying whatever is comfortable and with no insurance required. Even for people with insurance, the fee range extends far below typical co-pays, so it is a great deal for everyone! You can call to make an appointment (206-524-6428) or even appoint yourself on the North Sea’s website (www.northseaforme.com). Either way, the process is easy and convenient.

The North Seattle Community Acupuncture opened in June 2009 as Seattle’s fourth Community Acupuncture clinic. Currently, there are nine independent Seattle clinics that stretch from Shoreline to Columbia City, and more than one hundred sixty around the world. They all follow the guidelines of the Community Acupuncture Network (CAN), an international organization focused on providing affordable healthcare for everyone. Patients pay low fees, are treated in a group setting, and are welcome to stay as long as they like. Many studies have shown that healing works best in a supportive, relaxed environment. That’s a key goal of Community Acupuncture, healthcare for the entire community in a community-style setting.

Shots Fired in Lake City

I hate having these lulls in posts interrupted by these sorts of stories but it’s a big enough one I thought people should know…

The details are a bit sketchy and contradictory but it sounds like there was a beating and shots fired at the 12700 Block of Lake City Way NE, in the parking lot of the Lake City Bar and Grill. There are reports of a large group at the scene and there have been multiple arrests so far. Somebody was taken to Harborview and it sounds like it was initially reported that they were shot but it’s not being described as a beating with a severe head injury.
