Some big news

Safeway has confirmed that the new Pinehurst Safeway will be LEED silver certified.

While neighbors have asked for LEED certification since our initial discussions with Safeway, Safeway previously could only commit to the store being LEED silver certifiable. Certification costs significantly more than simply building the store to LEED standards. This decision and the entire Pinehurst Safeway project represents a significant investment by Safeway in our community.

More information on LEED can be found here.

Can someone legally park in front of my house continually?

This question comes up a lot in Seattle. Casey McNerthney has the answer at Seattlepi.com.

Lake City Neighborhood Plan Status Check (give your feedback)

This summer, many Lake City neighbors attended a meeting and many more participated in on line questionnaires to review the Draft Lake City Neighborhood Status Report and comment on changes— good, bad, and unexpected —that have occurred since the Lake City Neighborhood Plans was written in the late 90’s. Comments can be reviewed here.

The Neighborhood Plan Advisory Committee (NPAC) and the Seattle Planning Commission want to report back on the trends that emerged so far and to get your help to identify the continuing priorities and new issues that should be emphasized in the final Status Reports and a State of the Neighborhood Report that will be presented to the City Council and Mayor. These reports will contribute to policy decisions including decisions about whether or how to update our neighborhood plan. Your input is important.

There are two ways to participate: attend a meeting (see details below) or complete an on-line questionnaire.

Meeting: Thursday, November 12th, 6-8 pm
North Seattle Community College, 9600 College Way N – Cafeteria

Revised new Seattle Public Schools assignment areas

The latest Seattle Public Schools assignment areas were released on Tuesday this week. Apologies for not posting this earlier. It has been a wacky week on my end.

The changes will have an impact on some Pinehurst families. The northern boundary for Olympic View Elementary goes north to 127th and the whole Jackson Park area will now be Ingraham instead of Nathan Hale for high school.

There is still time to comment on these changes. And, note that boundaries will likely change again in 3 to 5 years and again thereafter based on population changes.

There is a Seattle Times article on the changes here and you can read more at the Seattle Public Schools site here and at the Seattle Schools blog here.

Here are the revised maps (click on the images to enlarge):

This weekend’s breakfast special at Treehouse Coffee (November 7-8)

From Michele:

Yesterday I was thankful for red-orange and yellow leaves with brown spots that swirled down murky gutters. Today, it is the sunshine and fresh air that comes from a good pounding of rain.

This weekends breakfast special at Treehouse Coffee is sausage, egg and cheese strada. Since last weekends special was well received we will continue serving waffles as well, for the month of November. Have a great weekend!

North Seattle Family Center Needs Tutors

The North Seattle Family Center has had a large enrollment of new kids and has very few tutors. Some kids will be placed on the “Wait List” at this point. The Center would love to have more tutors for its tutoring program. The program is 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. each Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon at the Center, 3200 NE 125th St. (Lake City). Kids attending range from Kindergarten through 10th grade. Students can earn Community Service hours by volunteering for the tutoring program. Interested folks can come by the center or request an application to be sent to them. Questions? Please call Patti Drummond at the North Seattle Family Center: 364-7930, #2724.
