NE 45th Street Viaduct Project Open House – November 12th

From a press release from Seattle Department of Transportation:

SEATTLE – The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) invites the public to an open house to learn about replacement plans for the west approach of the NE 45th Street Viaduct. It will be held on Thursday, November 12, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the University Presbyterian Church located at 4540 15th Avenue NE, Seattle.

The NE 45th Street Viaduct’s existing west approach is nearing the end of its structural life and needs to be rebuilt to maintain a safe and efficient travel corridor for vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles. SDOT will replace the 468-foot west approach, and evaluate the east approach and main span for seismic retrofit needs.

SDOT is planning to construct the new west approach during summer 2010 when traffic is lighter due to the University of Washington’s summer session. Based on community input, SDOT will utilize a full-closure construction phasing for the work to shorten its timeframe and reduce how long travelers are detoured around the area. The closure will last up to four months.

The department is working closely with local community groups, institutions and businesses in planning this project, and will continue to involve the public as it moves forward with final design and construction.

The project is part of the voter-approved Bridging the Gap program and will cost approximately $30 million. For additional information, please visit the project Web site at www.seattle.gov/transportation/45th-bridge.htm.

The Seattle Department of Transportation builds, maintains and operates Seattle’s $12 billion transportation infrastructure. To further Mayor Nickels’ goal to get Seattle moving, the department manages short- and long-term investments in streets, bridges, pavement and trees, that better connect the city with the region.

2009 elections are over!!

Thank you to everyone who voted and to all who participated in the many Seattle, King County and Washington State campaigns. This was the first year that I have been actively involved in meeting candidates and learning about the campaign process. It was an amazing experience. I now have the highest respect for all who run for public office. Running in itself is an enormous act of service. Last night, I attended election night events and celebrated the end of an exciting, eventful and pretty amazing election year. Photo below is of some of the news crews last night.

Sandbags Available From Seattle Public Utilities

Storm season is underway and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is offering a limited number of free, filled sandbags to households or business owners in flood-prone areas. If you’ve experienced, or come close to, flooding, you may consider using sandbags.

Sandbags don’t seal out water, but can help redirect the flow of water and protect property from debris. Sandbags must be used with caution because it is illegal to divert water to your neighboring properties.

SPU is making up to 25 sandbags available to households or businesses at four locations listed below starting Friday, November 6. Sandbags are heavy (they weigh about 40 pounds each), so be sure either you, or someone you bring with you, can lift, carry and load the sandbags into your vehicle.

Sandbag Pick-Up Locations:

Meadowbrook Community Center
10517 35th Ave. NE
Seattle, WA 98108

Helene Madison Pool
13401 Meridian N
Seattle, WA 98133

Delridge Community Center
4501 Delridge Way SW
Seattle, WA 98106

South Park Neighborhood

731 S. Sullivan
Seattle, WA 98125

SPU will have staff on site on November 6 and 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with information about how to place sandbags and prepare for storm season.

If you are unable to pick up sandbags on November 6 or 7, you can still pick them up at any of these locations, any time of day, while supplies last. Sandbags will be left outside for public pick-up. To make sure there are enough sandbags available for all those in need, please limit your supply to 25 sandbags per address.

For more information about sandbags, go to www.seattle.gov/util or contact Pat O’Brien at (206) 786-9772.
