Seattle City Council Candidate Survivor

Campaign events, while very important, are not always the most fun way to spend an evening. Well, most campaign events other than those sponsored by the Washington Bus and The Stranger.

Last night, I attended Candidate Survivor at the Showbox in which candidates for Seattle City Council competed to last through three rounds audience voting to be the last ones standing on stage. They performed haiku about themselves. They had a talent section. And, they had to answer questions such as, “Have you ever been without health insurance,” or “Have you ever skinny dipped in Lake Washington?”

One of my personal favorite parts of the event was a dance off between Position 8 candidates Bobby Forch and Jordan Royer. Forch clearly excelled, but Royer held his own.

Pinehurst Safeway: Moving on to Council

The Seattle Hearing Examiner issued a recommendation that Seattle City Council approve the Pinehurst Safeway rezone application. Read the ruling here. Note there were no comments submitted to the Hearing Examiner in opposition to the rezone and no appeals to the Hearing Examiner’s recommendation were filed.

The next step in the rezone application process is a review and vote by Seattle City Council. We understand that the Seattle City Council Planning Land Use and Neighborhoods Committee is tentatively scheduled to consider the Pinehurst Safeway rezone on September 9th, but likely will not vote on the issue until September 23rd.

If the rezone is approved by Council this fall, Safeway expects to begin construction in early 2010 with the new store opening in fall 2010.

King County primary election – August 18th

The 2009 King County primary election will be entirely by mail this year. Ballots will be mailed around July 29th and should begin arriving to voters around July 30th. Ballots must be mailed and postmarked OR delivered in person to one of the 24-hour drop box locations (including one at Lake City Service Center) by Tuesday, August 18th. The top two candidates in each race will advance to the general election which will be held November 3, 2009.

Learn more about the primary election here.

View information on the candidates on the ballot here.

A number of organizations and media sources have voter recommendations. Here are a few that I am aware of (and I will keep adding as more become available):

Night out with your neighbors

Tuesday, August 4th is the annual Seattle Night Out. Neighbors across Seattle and the US will be meeting up for a potluck or some similar type of gathering to chat with their neighbors and build connections.

You do not have to meet up with your neighbors on that night, but it is an opportunity to close off your street (with some exceptions) and to enjoy this amazing summer weather and to be part of a larger event. Some neighbors choose to meet up on a weekend afternoon or evening when they can be more relaxed. And, other neighbors meet up more than one time per year. It is all up to you. But, meeting up and getting to know your neighbors makes a world of difference.
