This month the guest speaker was Lt. Stephen Hirjak from SPD’s Force Investigation Team. That’s the team that investigates instances where SPD uses significant force during encounters with the public. It was created as part of the 2011 Dept of Justice settlement agreement reforms. The Captain’s report included crime stats for this year-to-date compared to last year-to-date. Crime is down 12%, with burglary down 4%, car prowls down 20% and auto theft down 43%. But Robbery is up 49% and assault is up 37%. Some of the assault is due to shop lifters being accosted by security. SPD is helping businesses learn to deal with shoplifting more safely. Many in the neighborhood are especially concerned about the changes proposed for the 73. We gave a LOT of feedback earlier and they actually adjusted the plan to save the 73 but there are still reductions, including cuts on weekends. This is an opportunity to hear the plan directly from Metro and give feedback on our concerns in person. It should be a fun (and lively!) meeting. Thursday, September 24th at 6:30pm Note: Other agenda items may get added. Updates to follow. Zoe drew this picture of the pocket park at Pinehurstfest. She put herself and a boy in the park – AND her drawing in the kiosk. I believe the message in green is ‘Keep earth clean’. That’s a great sentiment! The simplicity of the three colors really works, doesn’t it? Her drawing is in the kiosk at Pinehurst Pocket Park, NE 117th St and 19th Ave NE. If you would like to submit your child’s artwork for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org. We’ll put it on mat board donated by FRAMEIT Ltd, 10712 5th Ave NE. There will be a debate between the two candidates running for the District 5 City Council seat (Sandy Brown and Debora Juarez) on Saturday September 19 at 7:30 p.m. The debate is sponsored by Town Hall and will be held at Northgate Community Center, 10510 5th Avenue NE. Admission is free, but you must register to attend. You may register at this website: https://townhallseattle.org/event/city-council-debate-district-5/ |
