Neighbor Appreciation Day February 8th

NeighborAppreciationDayCelebrate Seattle’s 20th Annual Neighbor Appreciation Day, a special day set aside to reach out to neighbors, create new friends, and express thanks to those who help make our neighborhood a great place to live. Community groups, businesses, and residents across Seattle will join together on Saturday, February 8 (and the week of) to celebrate.

Here are ways you can celebrate Neighbor Appreciation Day:

·         Plan an activity such as a block party, potluck, or work party. This website provides ideas, tools, resources, and templates to help you organize an activity. Once scheduled, you can post your event to the events calendar.

·         Attend one of the many community activities listed on the events calendar. Many Seattle Fire stations (including Lake City and Northgate) along with pools, parks, and neighborhoods are hosting celebrations and work parties.

·         Send Neighbor Appreciation Day e-cards to your neighbors.

·         Share a story or two about your favorite Pinehurst neighbors. You can post stories about great neighbors or neighborhoods on the website, or post it to the Facebook page.

Pedestrian Zones in Pinehurst – Survey

pedestrianzoneThe Department of Planning and Development (DPD) is studying a variety of areas around the city to promote more walkable neighborhood business districts. This would involve adding a pedestrian designation to existing Neighborhood Commercial Zones.

By adding a pedestrian retail area designation to a neighborhood commercial (NC) zone, the aim is to:

  • Preserve areas that offer a mix of street level pedestrian-oriented destinations accessible by foot, bike, and transit
  • Identify and encourage areas that have potential to transition to a pedestrian-oriented neighborhood business district
  • Encourage more walking, biking, and transit use to and within neighborhood business districts by preserving and promoting active destinations

This is a good time to think about our neighborhood and let the city know what we want!

DPD is also considering modifications to the existing regulations that would apply to existing and new pedestrian zones. It will prepare final recommendations after receiving community feedback. Please review the preliminary recommendations and take its survey by February 28.

In the preliminary recommendations map, Pinehurst/Lake City has three pedestrian zones:

– 15th Ave NE & NE 125th St

– Roosevelt Way NE & NE 125th St

– Pinehurst Way

Parks Legacy Plan – Feedback Wanted

SeattleParksThe Parks Legacy Citizens’ Advisory Committee is developing a package for a future ballot measure to pay
for parks and recreation projects, ongoing maintenance and operations, and recreation programs. It’s also
looking at different ways to fund those investments.

Add your voice to this future ballot measure. Join your fellow community members and tell the Committee what you think. The meeting closest to Pinehurst is at

Bitter Lake Community Center, 13035 Linden Ave N, on Thursday January 30th, 7:00 pm

The Committee is looking for feedback on their recommendations in three specific areas:

1. PRIORITIES— did the Committee find the right balance between taking care of what we have, programming, and new development?

2. SIZE—learn how different levels of funding affect your taxes, and then tell us what you think the right size is!

3. FUNDING MECHANISM—learn about the differences between short-term, long-term, and permanent levies, and how those compare to the formation of a metropolitan parks district (MPD). Then, tell us which mechanism you think is most appropriate for Seattle, and any thoughts or concerns you have about it.

TO LEARN MORE, READ THE LEGACY COMMITTEE’S INTERIM REPORT.

The Interim Report details the Committee’s process, rationale, and interim recommendations—but they need your input before they finalize those recommendations! Detailed information about each proposed investment and possible funding mechanisms is also available on the Parks Legacy Citizens’ Advisory Committee website  http://www.seattle.gov/parks/legacy/committee.htm and available in hard copy at community centers and at the meetings.

MLK Day of Service – Jackson Park P-Patch

p-patchThe Giving Garden at the Jackson Park P-Patch is participating in the United Way of King County MLK Day of Service. It is  hosting a work party in its community garden on Monday, January 20th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The work party will focus on community areas, particularly the Giving Garden, which is entirely run by volunteers. There will be weeding, digging, spreading bark, and preparing beds for spring time. There will be free snacks and beverages. Families, pets and people of all physical abilities are welcome.

Last year the Giving Garden donated over 200 pounds of fresh, organic produce to local food banks, mostly to the North Helpline Lake City Food Bank. It also brings together a variety of neighbors from around Jackson Park and Pinehurst. There are disabled gardeners who work in raised beds, as well as gardeners who are new to America, and young families who are teaching their kids how to be gardeners and good neighbors.

Please come out and help! The P-patch is at 13049 10th Ave NE (10th Ave NE & NE 133rd).

Help Count Homeless Youth at Northgate Library 1/23

Each year since 2011, King County has conducted Count Us In, a point-in-time count to gather information on homeless and at-risk youth. In 2013, 776 youth and young adults were counted as homeless or unstably housed.

You can help this year as KC surveys youth to better understand the extent and nature of youth homelessness in our community so that we can more effectively address this critical issue. Surveys will be completed by youth at youth shelters, community centers, parks, nonprofit agencies and libraries.

Volunteers must be high-energy and outgoing and will serve at the Northgate Public Library for a shift between 4 and 8 pm. Volunteers commit to one 2 to 4-hour shift on January 23rd, 2014. Want to volunteer? Please let us know the time and library you are interested in volunteering at.
